I've been extremely frustrated with my health lately. I'm usually at a heightened sense of frustration, but the past few weeks have hit me hard. To the point that I'm feeling hopeless, desperate, and just plain lost in the sea of chronic conditions.

My diabetes isn't the main issue, even though it's always a source of stress in my life. Mostly, I feel like I'm just going along with my diabetes at the moment until my doctor's appointment later in the summer. I'm keeping up with my insulin, eating normally, exercising, and all that...just not focusing on making changes. I feel like I don't know where to make the next change, so I just want a break to absorb what I have right now (which are averages in the 150's).

One of the things I hate most about having type 1 diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome (or PCOS) is the battle over my weight. Between blood sugars, insulin, and hormones, it can be incredibly tough to keep my weight at my acceptable level. Lately, that struggle seems even worse than normal. And I know a lot of is water weight that I can't seem to shake thanks to the hormones and possibly oral contraceptives.

In 2009, I began working out several hours multiple times per week. I was doing intensive cardio as well as a lot of strength training. I would spend hours on the treadmill (not at a time), at the track, or in a "Guts and Glutes" class. And I finally saw results on the scale. My weight dipped by about 15 pounds.

My classes are all over the place this semester. Since I'm down to the final semesters, I don't have much left that I can take outside of my university or online. Plus I'm trying to leave the option to study abroad next semester, which means taking quite a few hardcore classes all at the same time.

I haven't done that since my first year here. After that, I managed to take at least one class online so I could better manage my fatigue. This semester, I wasn't so lucky. But you have to do what you have to do, right?

So far, I'm feeling okay. Just a little extra stress (headaches, sore muscles) from all the emotional things I'm going through right now. The fatigue hasn't set in...and I'm hoping that I can somehow ward it off this semester. But I am fighting against the balance of class and diabetes.

It's my last day of Accutane. I've officially finished five grueling months of the "miracle drug." I cannot say that I'll miss it.

The first two months weren't unbearable. Increasingly dry skin, headaches, and off and on joint pain. Easy enough to handle. Even with the rising insulin resistance that started within two days of starting the drug.

Month three was a hurdle. A big one. Rashes on my arms, migraines, constant back pain, and the fatigue. Oh, the fatigue. Month four and five have been difficult as well. Muscle cramps, unquenchable thirst, insomnia, and all sorts of dryness. On top of that extensive fatigue.

This weekend I was working at a church retreat. I would not call it work since all I did was play drums and sing for 4 days. It was more like having my dream job for a short week.
As much as I love to play music and serve others, I continue to find that long days such as these are difficult for me to bounce back from. Is it diabetes or my age? I like to think I am a young 34 for the most part but not too long ago I could function on 4 hours sleep. No longer! I always schedule an extra day off even for vacations and the like because I know I am worthless the following day.
I would love to hear from anyone with diabetes about this. I wonder sometimes if needing a day to recuperate after a weekend trip is a common practice among my fellow d-lifers. (READ MORE)

I haven't posted much on my other health conditions lately. Ever since taking Accutane, my PCOS seems to be much less of a concern. And my endometriosis is now something that I've adjusted to. But lately, I'm really feeling the physical and emotional strain of these other conditions.

The Accutane cleared my skin completely, although it did nothing for the hyperpigmentation and scarring left behind. My breakouts are now only happening around my period, although they are getting worse with each month. Nothing too alarming yet. I've been taking vitamin A every day for the past few months. I increased it the week of my last period which seemed to help that problem.

I didn't sleep enough Wednesday night, so by Thursday afternoon my eyelids were heavy and my body was screaming out "Sleep! Sleep!" So a little after five in the afternoon, I decided to take a quick nap. A little power nap to recharge my batteries before diving into study and cleaning mode to prepare for the coming weekend.

My blood sugar was at 222 with only a little active insulin. I'd been high in the early afternoon and hadn't accurately bolused for a late lunch. I decided to leave it alone until after my nap though...giving my body an hour or two to use that remaining insulin and peak out.

I curled up in bed with my cat and a good book...falling asleep within a few minutes. It was a dreamless sleep...too deep to notice the world around me or the world inside me. A limitless fatigue overwhelming every inch of my body and soul. The effects of ineffective sleeping and the recent change in medications.

Thursday morning, I woke up at 51 mg/dl. Friday morning, I was 50. Saturday, I woke up at 210 after a chocolate shake the night before and not enough insulin (210 was lower than I should have been). Sunday, 94. And this morning, a 65 mg/dl.

I've also been getting lower numbers from my morning Lantus peak (about 6 to 8pm since I take it between 10am and noon). Nothing too difficult, but a 64 there and an 88 there. Lows none the less.

I lowered my evening Lantus on Friday, after the two 50s. And Sunday, I lowered the morning Lantus as well. I still saw a low in the afternoon, but I think it was a mix of activity and a misjudged bolus. I held steady in the 110 to 120 range for almost twelve hours...something I haven't seen all that often lately.

Over the summer, I was working out quite a bit. I really wanted to set up habits, lose some weight, and just feel better about my body when the fall semester rolled around. And I did really well. I worked out three to four times a week, building my strength and endurance as I went along. Most importantly, I lost ten pounds and felt great about what my body was becoming again.

Towards the end of the summer, I started slacking off. I went on vacation, then came back for summer finals, then worked full time for two weeks...so I was running all over the place, but not getting any workouts in like normal. Thankfully, I was keeping busy and eating right well enough to not pack back on any pounds. But I didn't like the way it felt.
