This weekend I was working at a church retreat. I would not call it work since all I did was play drums and sing for 4 days. It was more like having my dream job for a short week.
As much as I love to play music and serve others, I continue to find that long days such as these are difficult for me to bounce back from. Is it diabetes or my age? I like to think I am a young 34 for the most part but not too long ago I could function on 4 hours sleep. No longer! I always schedule an extra day off even for vacations and the like because I know I am worthless the following day.
I would love to hear from anyone with diabetes about this. I wonder sometimes if needing a day to recuperate after a weekend trip is a common practice among my fellow d-lifers. (READ MORE)

It's my last day of Accutane. I've officially finished five grueling months of the "miracle drug." I cannot say that I'll miss it.
The first two months weren't unbearable. Increasingly dry skin, headaches, and off and on joint pain. Easy enough to handle. Even with the rising insulin resistance that started within two days of starting the drug.
Month three was a hurdle. A big one. Rashes on my arms, migraines, constant back pain, and the fatigue. Oh, the fatigue. Month four and five have been difficult as well. Muscle cramps, unquenchable thirst, insomnia, and all sorts of dryness. On top of that extensive fatigue.

I've been extremely frustrated with my health lately. I'm usually at a heightened sense of frustration, but the past few weeks have hit me hard. To the point that I'm feeling hopeless, desperate, and just plain lost in the sea of chronic conditions.
My diabetes isn't the main issue, even though it's always a source of stress in my life. Mostly, I feel like I'm just going along with my diabetes at the moment until my doctor's appointment later in the summer. I'm keeping up with my insulin, eating normally, exercising, and all that...just not focusing on making changes. I feel like I don't know where to make the next change, so I just want a break to absorb what I have right now (which are averages in the 150's).

I haven't posted much on my other health conditions lately. Ever since taking Accutane, my PCOS seems to be much less of a concern. And my endometriosis is now something that I've adjusted to. But lately, I'm really feeling the physical and emotional strain of these other conditions.
The Accutane cleared my skin completely, although it did nothing for the hyperpigmentation and scarring left behind. My breakouts are now only happening around my period, although they are getting worse with each month. Nothing too alarming yet. I've been taking vitamin A every day for the past few months. I increased it the week of my last period which seemed to help that problem.

My classes are all over the place this semester. Since I'm down to the final semesters, I don't have much left that I can take outside of my university or online. Plus I'm trying to leave the option to study abroad next semester, which means taking quite a few hardcore classes all at the same time.
I haven't done that since my first year here. After that, I managed to take at least one class online so I could better manage my fatigue. This semester, I wasn't so lucky. But you have to do what you have to do, right?
So far, I'm feeling okay. Just a little extra stress (headaches, sore muscles) from all the emotional things I'm going through right now. The fatigue hasn't set in...and I'm hoping that I can somehow ward it off this semester. But I am fighting against the balance of class and diabetes.

One of the things I hate most about having type 1 diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome (or PCOS) is the battle over my weight. Between blood sugars, insulin, and hormones, it can be incredibly tough to keep my weight at my acceptable level. Lately, that struggle seems even worse than normal. And I know a lot of is water weight that I can't seem to shake thanks to the hormones and possibly oral contraceptives.
In 2009, I began working out several hours multiple times per week. I was doing intensive cardio as well as a lot of strength training. I would spend hours on the treadmill (not at a time), at the track, or in a "Guts and Glutes" class. And I finally saw results on the scale. My weight dipped by about 15 pounds.

Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, congestion.
Most people who read this set of symptoms think, "common cold" or today, "rhinovirus". But it also describes the symptoms suffered by many with seasonal or other allergies.
The general term is "histamine reaction" — and while these symptoms don't describe all histamine reactions (hives, localized swelling, and/or general bloating can also be present in a histamine reaction) — the correct diagnosis should be histamine reaction until an underlying cause (allergies, rhinovirus, influenza, etc.) is determined.

Marvin and I spent the weekend with my family and doing a lot of driving across the state of Texas. Generally, Marvin is incredibly understanding of my health issues. He's been through many ups and downs with it. He completely gets what diabetes does and is for me.
But Saturday night, he said something that was a little unsettling because he hadn't said it that way before. Sometimes when I'm not feeling well or having a few "bad days" (pain, nausea, fatigue), he'll make a comment that I'm always sick. Nothing concerning though.
On Saturday evening, my stomach was a little upset while we were watching movies at my mom's house. We'd eaten Chinese food for lunch and I think it just wasn't sitting well with me. I'd also gone from low to high in a 2 hour span. I expressed that I didn't feel well to Marvin.

Work has kept me insanely busy lately. Add in all my other responsibilities like ordering my bridesmaid's dress for my friend's wedding, keeping up with Marvin and I's relationship, and maintaining my car, I haven't had a lot of "spare" time. I'm honestly doing good to eat and shower most days.
It's not that I work more hours than most people. I put in at least 40 hours, sometimes a little more. I can't complain about that because I know my own family members are working 60+ hour weeks. But every day I come home and all I want to do is crawl into bed and sleep. And many days, I do just that.
