I just finished a fast a few days ago. It was one of the single most awesome things that I have ever done. I’ve been reading a very interesting book lately – it talks in length about many things in life – but one thing that I really wanted to try was a fast.

 



After I started reading this book, and I began to learn a lot about fasting, I decided to do a bit more research for myself online and by asking friends. I got a lot of mixed reviews. Some people were very anti-fast and some people raved about it. So I dug a little deeper and decided this was something that was going to be a very PERSONAL EXPERIENCE and I figured I would try it out for myself (just like you should do if your ever curious about something).

We've tried -- as a family -- to eliminate fast food a number of times. We've given it up for Lent countless times, we've banned it from the house except for once a week countless times, we've said we can only afford to do it once a month countless times.

 

No matter how we tried or what we tried it always seemed to make its way back into our lives. Typically it would be because some evening activity ran late and we'd need to find something to eat for dinner rather quickly to keep the kids on a bedtime/bathtime schedule.

 

When I was growing up we rarely ate out. I mean we had pizza here and there, but for the most part we had dinner at home. Of course, it helped that my dad was the family cook and was generally home by 4 p.m. Even when my brothers and I were in sports and had practice after school until 5:30 p.m. we could always count on dinner being ready for us (even if we had to re-heat it!) when we got home.

I wrote recently about my first fast. I loved the experience and I hope you decide to look into it forImage credit:  Bulinna on Flickr yourself to see if it’s something you’re interested in doing. But now that a few days have past, and I’m back to eating, “normal” again, I wanted to let everyone know how things are going.

 



Since the fast I have had a few highs, some mild depression (psychological, as well as physiological), but overall some WONDERFUL blood sugars!

I was in my truck today picking up some fast food from Mickey D's. I typically don't eat fast food. Actually, I never do- but today I was in a hurry and I just wanted to get something fast and not have to put to much thought into it. As I was ordering, I realized that with diabetes there is no such thing as just a "quick little meal". Any time I eat something, I have to put some serious thought and effort into it. Everyday, I put serious energy and brain power towards calculating things in my head.

My life revolves around eating and calculating.

I've been in a mood all day and I think part of the reason is because I've been thinking about writing this post. This is not an easy subject to talk about and I realize that there are people who will vehemently disagree with me and others who will completely identify with what I'm about to say.

 

I've been thinking about writing a post like this for some time, but I don't think I had the nerve to put this out there for the whole internet world to read. But after a fairly intense discussion with sara n. dipity last week about food, food choices and, essentially, will power, I think it's time for me to go ahead and put it out there.

During the opening day baseball ceremonies, the league president had some good news to share regarding the snack stand.

 

"This year, we'll have mozzarella sticks!"

 

The kids in their clean, colorful uniforms cheered and "whoo-hooed." Charlie looked up at me and licked his nose like a Labrador.  Me? I stared at the man with the microphone like he was the antichrist.

 

We are about three weeks into baseball. I had my usual brief chat with Charlie's coach, mentioning that he has diabetes and that he may see Charlie snacking on something in the dugout or coming off the field to test his blood sugar.

 

The snack stand is definitely a challenge.  It is filled with perilous options.

Walking from the kitchen in one building back to our cubes in another building this afternoon, A and I joked about how easy it would be to lose weight if we just had someone to cook for us.

 

Well, it's not so much of a joke. Between my sophomore and junior years of college I lived at home, The Mr. (who was not yet The Mr.) was in the Navy and my summer job was nearly an hour from home. Dad cooked for me every night, I walked two miles a day at a furious pace. I lost 30 lb. that summer. I was 9 lb. from my goal weight when I went back to school and started eating, well like a college student.

 

My new walking routine has resulted in a lower A1C, but no fewer pounds yet. Partly because I haven't changed my eating habits, but at least I'm seeing some sort of result from the near-daily walks.

Food is frustrating to me. Ever since I can remember, food has been a completely different aspect in my life than what my family, peers, and humanity deals with. Yes, food is a source of energy and existence. Yes, it's amazing. Yes, it packs on the pounds. But it's also a total love-hate relationship with me. For one reason: diabetes.

 

When I was first diagnosed, my life was thrown into "sugar-free" mode. My sugar intake was limited. I never tasted a real coke unless I was low. I didn't get to eat normal candy or normal desserts. Everything was tainted by fake sugar, a chemical taste that couldn't replace my childhood need for some old-fashioned sugar.

I got a bit of flak from a number of folk in the type 1 community for juxtaposing the You Can Do This project with the "you CAN eat this if you have diabetes" mentality of, well, many of the same folk. The issue is, the same folk who are, on the one hand, encouraging us to test and inject and correct are the folk who are talking about Food Police and Diabetes Police and how we, as people with diabetes, have to fight against those stereotypes by -- well, by eating all those things we should never touch with a ten-foot-pole.

 

This may work for people with type 1 diabetes, but it can be deadly for those of us with type 2.

The results from my first week on the Core Plan at Weight Watchers proved positive. I lost a little. I thought I would lose more. I expected I would. But I still lost so that is good.
I posted about the differences between the Flex and Core plan on my personal blog today.
One of the big differences about the Flex plan (one with the Points) and the Core plan is that you eat until you are satisfied. This, my dear readers, may be the reason for not losing at least a flipping pound this week.
Satisfied? How do I figure that out? I always ate until I was full or finished my plate and that was it. That is the way I was raised. “Are you full?” That was always the question when I would announce being “done” with dinner.
But being satisfied is a totally different thing. (READ MORE)
