Jumping into the world of pumping is no simple task. And I don’t mean that it is hard to get an insulin pump. The hard part is picking through the available pump companies, deciding which one suits your lifestyle, and finding a way to pay for it. If you live in Duckburg and own a bank vault full of coins, you can pay the thousands of dollars for up-front costs and hundreds monthly for a pump. But for the rest of us, health insurance is the only avenue to an insulin pump.

I don't think I've ever been more undecided about a health-care issue than I am right now.

To DexCom or not to DexCom?

Last week, I wrote that I was up in arms about my insurance company saying it wouldn't pay for the DexCom sensors because my policy doesn't have "disposable coverage" and that I was going to fight for the coverage. Today has been a pretty good day, and I've been thinking that I don't really need a CGMS.

I know, that's totally weird coming from someone who has been saying for months how beneficial the system would be to my life.

Last night my buddy and I played some Racquetball. When I got off of work at 4:00 pm the temperature outside was a whopping 104° F. I figured this would be a total sweat fest and a great opportunity to melt some pounds off.

When I met with our new CPA for the first time, I brought him everything I could think he would need. In 2008 my family and I lived in two states and between me and my husband we had five jobs.

As we sat down to talk taxes, he asked the obvious, normal questions. And then the biggie: he wanted to know if I kept receipts or records from doctor's office co-pays or any other medical treatment. No, of course not, because I had no need to. Well, in Arizona, he said, you can write off your medical expenses, right down to your office co-pays.

Well, hot damn, I thought! I have tons of medical expenses!

"Co-pays, really?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Prescriptions?"

"Yes."

I despise politics -- political or office or otherwise. First I don't really understand much of it and second I just don't see why people have to act like high school all the time.

It's only been recently that I paid much attention to the presidential election. I remember voting in my first presidential election; I was a senior in college and voting by absentee ballot. I felt it was my civic duty to vote, but I couldn't figure out what the real issues were because there was so much mud slinging. The guy I voted for won, but I remember thinking "He hasn't done such a bad job the last four years, so he's probably the lesser of the two evils." Yes, that's seriously what I based my vote on.

It has been quite an interesting week and a half. I started my new job, spent the weekend alone for once, and tried to prepare for Christmas without any money. The new job is still fine. It's stressful at the moment because I'm building the program from scratch which means a lot of running around and testing things out. I'm feeling productive though, which is great.

My big concern lately is money. It took me awhile to find a job and my savings took a hit. My credit card bill is rising again this month with the added expenses of the holidays as well as work. I had to get clothes tailored and cleaned. I'm spending more on car maintenance (speaking of, I need to get my oil changed). There's also a lot of lunch expenses that I've had (this week I'm focusing on taking my lunch instead of buying).

I've been somewhat ambivalent about today's rally surrounding the United Nations Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases. The libertarian "party line" is that the United Nations does little more than abrogate nation-states' sovereignty and forcibly redistribute income from the wealthier nations to the less-wealthy, dampening incentives for innovation and destroying private charity efforts which would otherwise improve the lives of those in need. On the other hand, the prospect of spending time with friends I seldom see in-person is an opportunity not to be missed.

It's a dilemma I'd been wrestling with for a couple of months, and friendship was winning over politics. However, neither friendship nor politics had the choice to decide.

The deciding factor was money.

Before you know it, it's Oct. 18 and you haven't blogged once this month. *sigh*

Here's what I've been up to:

1. At the end of last month The Mr. lost his job. So all non-essential expenses were cut. Which meant that I had to give up my food therapy and my nutritionist. Since insurance didn't cover the nutritionist, and the cost was more than $100 per visit and she wanted to meet with me at least twice a month that simply had to go. While insurance did cover my therapist, I still needed to cut expenses. I'm still employing the techniques my nutritionist gave me, though I found it easier to do so when I was still seeing her. We also chose to cut the kids' activities, which was really hard for me to swallow. Fortunately, the kids' aikido teacher waived the fee until we could get back on our feet. Also, my mom gave No. 2 money for her birthday to go toward one month of her guitar lessons.

In the past month, I have spent quite a bit of money on medical bills. $296 for a dental nightguard to save my teeth. $50 for my endo appointment, another $50 for my eye exam. $45 for my birth control. $412 for 6 months of contacts and a new pair of glasses (this was even on sale). And so many other odds and ends like a blood pressure cuff, miscellaneous prescriptions, and vitamins. Not to mention the $50 per visit copays to a new therapist.

I can't afford this. Right now, I'm making decent money for my field and my insurance is free of charge. But I still struggle when prescriptions come due or miscellaneous expenses come around. It becomes burdensome to order insulin, strips, and other diabetes supplies. It becomes outrageous to buy these extra necessities like glasses, dental issues, or therapy.

I started applying to jobs as soon as I got back from my vacation. Maybe it was the thought of spending the next few months living with my mom or maybe it was all the money that I watched leave my bank account for the trip. Probably a bit of both plus my inherent need to be working or studying.

I haven't applied to that many so far because I just can't seem to find things that fit. Either I'm not interested in them or my qualifications don't fit what the company is looking for. Plus I'm just not sure what types of jobs I want to lock into right now.

I'm trying to focus on two main areas at the moment. Health care. And social services. Some combination of the two is really what I'm hoping for, but we can't be too picky. So I've applied for jobs like "Patient Navigator" or "Health Pro" and even today I applied for a pharmaceutical sales position.
