I hate exercising. I should rephrase that. I hate typical exercise. You know what I mean. Stuff like lifting weights, stair steppers, treadmills, those scary machines, aerobics, jazzercise, and pretty much all the stuff you see at the typical "gym."
And that is the other part of it. Every gym in my neck of the woods feels like you can not enter until you are fit and trim. So yours truly who has a long way to go would feel very out of place until I was a total lean mean D machine.
Of course being a "born again diabetic" I know that exercise needs and should be a part of my daily routine. So how do I make the non-existent gym rat in my come out?

I spent the early part of the summer with a good handle on the diet half of the "diet & exercise" equation, but did little or no intentional exercise. Then my job ended. I found a really cheap deal at a decent nearby gym and joined up.

Kerri, our buddy ol' pal here at Blogabetes, sent us bloggers some writing prompts the other day. One prompt that hit home with me was writing about what people can do during these cold months to stay active and keep the pounds off. It is a natural process for us as humans to throw on a few extra lbs as the cold weather starts to approach. With that in mind, I for one, really enjoy working out in MY VERY OWN LIVING ROOM. Even as dedicated as some of us are to working out, it is still a pain to get out into the cold. Nobody likes running to their car, scraping the ice off, and waiting for it warm up just to drive to the gym!! It is hard enough for people to be motivated on the warm days. That's where your living room and your creativity come into play.

In a couple weeks I will have the honor of speaking at a JDRF family retreat in St. Louis. Last year was my first time being involved in such a thing and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. I got the pleasure of meeting lots of kids with diabetes and their wonderful parents. This event is special to me because I was them 15 years ago. I was that kid who was living with this special disease who had extremely loving and supportive parents who were with me all the way. I love getting the opportunity to be a positive influence to these children. Hopefully I will make a lasting impression about being able live a good and normal life despite being slightly "different" than other kids. (READ MORE)

So the flub is really starting to get to me. That is, the flub that's making my pants feel tight, my shirts feel smaller and all that other good stuff that comes with extra weight.
Driving home tonight from work -- I have a one-hour commute now instead of roughly 10 minutes -- I started thinking about when exactly I could fit some exercise into my daily routine. Between getting up at 5:30 a.m. so I can leave by 7 a.m. and often not getting home until after 6 p.m. and taking care of three kids and completing a bunch of freelance work and taking care of a new house there's not much time in the day for exercise.
For a long time I've enjoyed exercising first thing in the morning. I used to say that if it didn't happen as soon as I got up it wasn't gonna happen at all. And when you live in the desert in the summer, exercising outside in the morning is really the best advice!

Working out with a stability, or Swiss ball, is an awesome way to get a good workout. If you're not familiar with what a stability ball is, then you can look it up on your computer or stop by a sport store. They are large rubber balls that allow you to work on numerous things. Their sizes range from 35 cm to 85 cm depending on the types of movements you want to do. Some of the benefits include balance, stability and core exercises, and they are also great to stretch on. Brynn just bought one for relatively cheap at our local Wal-Mart. If you decide to buy one, you have the option of purchasing the nicer name brand models, but from my experience, a rubber ball is a rubber ball. Anyway, this morning, I found myself working out on our stability ball and it felt wonderful!

My mom and I were making the second round on our neighborhood walk. Before I left the house, I didn't do my usual pre-walk routine. Typically, I check my blood sugar and lower my basal by 40% for two hours. I'm not sure how I forgot to do all that, but it never even crossed my mind.
That was until I started to get really tired. I felt fine. No butterflies in my stomach. No fog surrounding my thoughts. Nothing to set off the LOW warning in my head. Except that I was dragging. My legs could barely move. My mom was steps ahead of me, walking at our normal pace.

I love this time of year. As soon as we can "spring ahead" and gain that hour of sunlight in the afternoon, I get excited. Before this last Sunday it was dark soon after I got home from work which meant no Disc Golf during the week.
A while back I wrote a post about how I am not a typical gym guy. I like to exercise in non-traditional ways such as racquetball or disc golf instead of being strapped to a machine at a health club. Well now that the days are longer I can meet my buddies at the park after work for a round of disc golf. If you can throw a Frisbee then you can play this game. It is not nearly as frustrating to me as golf is. I am terrible at traditional golf. (READ MORE)

Last week I set the bar high for myself. Too high. Out of a possible 25 points, I earned a total of 16. I can make all the excuses in the world for why I was not successful, but the truth of the matter is, I just wasn't as focused as I was the previous week.
But it's a new day, a new week and so far, I'm doing OK. I revamped my goals for the week, backtracking a bit closer to my original plan. This week, I'm focusing on:
1. Testing my blood sugar four times a day. Last week, I knocked this off the list entirely thinking I had it under control again, but then I slacked, so its back at the top of the list. (READ MORE)

I haven't been walking lately. In fact, I can't remember the last time I went for a morning walk. I *do* remember putting my exercise clothes out one night certain that I'd be walking the next morning and then not actually walking.
I'm not sure what the problem is. Over the summer, naturally it was the heat. I've come to realize that it's not how hot it gets here, it's how long it's hot. And I think when you're so hot for so long you just don't want to do anything that makes you hotter.
As the summer wore on and the days got shorter, it was harder to get out of bed in the mornings. The Mr. and I would both hit snooze so many times that we'd almost be late for work! It was "easy" to do that since it stayed dark longer.
