What kinds of exercises, hobbies, or activities do you enjoy doing and what kinds of things do you do to navigate around blood sugar issues? This was my random thought of the day so far, so I thought I would share it with you guys and see if you would tell me your stories in return.
Personally, one of my most favorite passions is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am training about 5 times a week or so, it makes me feel great and I love it. But one thing about Jiu Jitsu is that it's very intense and it's difficult to find the balance between having good sugars and being able to participate fully, say for example, like any non-diabetic person would.

I believe a good workout comes with sweat. Which is why I don’t exercise during my lunch break and also why I prefer to exercise first thing in the morning.
I prefer to do my exercise walking outside. Using a treadmill is a last resort for me. I’m one of those weird people who’s more likely to exercise if it means I *don’t* have to go to the gym.
I’ve written a number of times lately about being committed to figuring out how to fit exercise into my schedule. The farthest I’ve gotten is the part where I say I’m going to think about it. But I’m getting fluffy and clothes that used to fit beautifully aren’t so much any more. Plus, I feel good when I exercise.

So the flub is really starting to get to me. That is, the flub that's making my pants feel tight, my shirts feel smaller and all that other good stuff that comes with extra weight.
Driving home tonight from work -- I have a one-hour commute now instead of roughly 10 minutes -- I started thinking about when exactly I could fit some exercise into my daily routine. Between getting up at 5:30 a.m. so I can leave by 7 a.m. and often not getting home until after 6 p.m. and taking care of three kids and completing a bunch of freelance work and taking care of a new house there's not much time in the day for exercise.
For a long time I've enjoyed exercising first thing in the morning. I used to say that if it didn't happen as soon as I got up it wasn't gonna happen at all. And when you live in the desert in the summer, exercising outside in the morning is really the best advice!

A kink already.
I told Mom this morning about my new schedule. The one where my retired mother doesn't have to get up so early any more to be to my house by 7:15 a.m. to take care of the kids before school so The Mr. and I can get to work on time. She loved it, by the way. Also because she knows I need and want to exercise.
Not long after she left the house, though, she called to remind me that my plan to start my new schedule on Monday (I hate starting on Mondays) may need to be rethunk. (rethinked? reconsidered?) No. 1 and No. 2 start their two-week spring break on Monday and they are going to day camp. Camp that's on *my* way to work. Camp that *I* was planning to drop them off at around 7 a.m. on my way to work. Camp that I'm not sure I can convince The Mr. to take them to because it's slightly out of his way and will require him to give up driving his motorcycle to work for two weeks.

Exercise can be a really tricky thing when you're diabetic. Whether you're starting a new routine or just changing up an old one, it's tough to manage blood sugars alongside cardio and resistance training. The ups and downs add an extra edge to the difficulty of staying in shape.
Last week, I decided to try some new exercise classes which sent my blood sugars into a tailspin. Luckily, I was able to lower my insulin and fend off the lows...but I wasn't able to achieve the balance that I crave. This week I'm still working hard to get back into shape (and lose some more weight)...but mostly I'm trying to find that medium ground between the highs and lows of exercise.

The problem with mornings is that they come too damn early. I'm not a morning person. I'm sure I've established that at some point. I think I've gotten better about mornings since I had kids (The Mr. may disagree with me!) but I'd still much rather sleep until 9 a.m. than do just about anything else.
So motivating myself to get up to exercise of all things by 5:20 a.m. is a serious accomplishment. Sometimes it's easier than others. Lately it has not been easier.

I haven't been walking lately. In fact, I can't remember the last time I went for a morning walk. I *do* remember putting my exercise clothes out one night certain that I'd be walking the next morning and then not actually walking.
I'm not sure what the problem is. Over the summer, naturally it was the heat. I've come to realize that it's not how hot it gets here, it's how long it's hot. And I think when you're so hot for so long you just don't want to do anything that makes you hotter.
As the summer wore on and the days got shorter, it was harder to get out of bed in the mornings. The Mr. and I would both hit snooze so many times that we'd almost be late for work! It was "easy" to do that since it stayed dark longer.

I'm one of those annoying people who actually enjoys exercise. I love the feeling of my body running or walking in smooth motions, the way my muscles push through even the toughest movements, the feeling of being on top of the world when you're running down a trail. I don't shy away from most activities because I can't do them or don't enjoy them, instead I thrive on new exercises and overcoming my previous goals.
Just a short year and a half ago, I was on the biggest exercise kick ever. I'd done sports of all kinds in junior high and high school. I'd enjoyed them and even to this day still miss them. But in 2009, I was working out to lose weight. I was committed. Working out in the gym with classes or weights around 2 hours almost 7 days a week. Running on top of that.

I've really been struggling with my numbers lately. The Symlin has complicated things by causing prolonged highs after meals. My Lantus doesn't seem adequate, although last week it was too efficient. There is just no medium ground with the D lately.
I've finally gotten a few meals on Symlin at 30 mcg without the severe nausea that I was experiencing earlier. I'm not quite ready to raise it to 45 mcg though. I'm hoping for Tuesday if tomorrow shows continued improvement. I know that I can get the highs under control once I have the Symlin straightened out.
The waiting is killing me though. Literally. I hate running high. I hate the way I feel when I'm high like this. The fuzz that won't budge. The thirst that can't be quenched. The nausea that comes up suddenly.

Working out with diabetes is always a challenge. There are a lot of variables that come into play when you mix exercise and diabetes. You have to watch out for all aspects of the spectrum: highs, lows, and anything in between.
When I was on the pump, exercise always seemed like a major chore. It was tricky knowing exactly when to suspend the pump, if I should suspend the pump, and what kind of basal rates to use the days following. Everyone always says that exercise is easier with the pump, but it took me awhile before I found a happy medium between diabetes and exercise.
Eventually, I figured out that if I went into my workout around 180, did cardio to bring it down, weights to bump things back up, and more cardio to finish things out, I could end up in a decent range. It was a lot of work and really an art or science or something I should be graded on.
