It was another morning of summer school. Hoping to check off one more math class from the graduation to-do list, I ventured to endure this condensed and fast paced six week course. I was cruising along well, ready for the second exam on this day. Little did I know, diabetes would aim to work against me.
Due to the upped level of stress this summer season, I encountered some topsy-turvy blood sugar levels. Today was no different. Eleven O'clock on the button I walked into class and received my exam. I was given two and a half hours to complete it and knew I would use every minute. I suppose it was somewhere towards the end that things started becoming more of a challenge. (READ MORE)

When I was asked to make my benefits selections for my current job, one of my options was whether or not to select an optical plan. After looking over what I would be paying on a weekly basis, and what I would be receiving, it was obvious that I would be a fool not to sign up, and that I would do much better to select the more expensive plan (it covers antireflective eyeglass coating). After some issues with finding an available slot in my schedule, I went to my local Lenscrafters for a much-overdue eye exam.

We all know that diabetics have an increased risk of everything from heart disease to kidney disease to glaucoma. Because of this increased risk, it is very important for diabetics to have regular checkups in many fields. Personally, I am always scheduling appointments for one thing or another. My main appointments include the following: (READ MORE)

Saturday night, I raised my evening Lantus dose to 16 units and kept my morning dosage at 13 units. I also moved the evening dose up by about three hours, hoping to stop those highs that sent me into sleep at 218 and 241. I also took the plunge and decided to do a trial run of boluses with the pump instead of pen or syringe. And I'm still as perplexed, but this time for the opposite reason.
Within a few hours of bolusing with the pump, I saw a 55 that bounced up to 114, 131, and back down to 93. Several snacks throughout the night left me at a morning number of 130. For most of Sunday, I stayed under 150 with a brief spike after working out. After dinner on Sunday night, I dropped to 84 then 69. And after about an hour, I was 146. But at 4am, I woke to an unexpected 47. I also lowered my evening Lantus to 15 units since I'd seen a rise in lows after the 16 units.

While my primary cycling fandom allegiance is to Team Type 1, since our household worships at the shrine of La Grande Boucle, you'll often find me streaming the day's race video on my computer, or when Versus or Universal Sports covers it, on the TV. So it was this morning, as the first of the three Grand Tours, the Giro d'Italia, played out its third stage.

What a weekend. What a month really. The past few weeks have been non-stop forward movement for me. Every weekend, I'm heading home for doctor's appointments or JDRF Walks or just "family" time. And all through the week, I'm running between classes, errands, friends, and daily happenings. My to do list is insanely long, filled with essays, exams, oil changes, grocery shopping, and cleaning.
Thankfully, my numbers seem to be settling down. I increased the Lantus dose by one unit back on Wednesday. And it worked until about Friday when I started seeing an endless amount of lows. I was stuck in the 60's, no matter what. So today I've lowered it back down to my usual dosage...hoping that I can get higher numbers, but not too high.

Sometimes diabetes really does come in handy in school. The knowledge I have obtained throughout more than fifteen years of this disease leads me to information overload. All this information gives me insight into the psychology of chronic illness, the details of diabetes, an overview of complications, and the added bonuses of nutrition, exercise, and all that jazz.
The two health classes that I have taken are prime examples of this information overload. When we reached the chapters covering diabetes, I didn't even have to study to pass that part of the exams. I already know the warning signs of type 1 and type 2, the treatments, and the list of complications. It's easy and saves me some time that I can devote to other diseases.

After an emotional breakdown Monday night and multiple vent emails to close friends, I'm feeling more prepared to deal with everything that's going on with my health right now. I've done some research, reviewed information that I already knew, and taken some alone time. And I've come up with a plan:
My first step is to get my focus back. I need to make it to class, no matter what. Excuses are unacceptable. My first round of exams starts next week, which I'm not prepared for at all. So this week, I need to get back on track with my schoolwork. Reading, writing, and making it to class.

My mom and I have booked our European cruise! We're going to some amazing ports and get to spend a few extra days in Rome, Italy. I'm incredibly excited.
There's a lot that needs to happen before we leave. This whole semester is speeding by. It's already March! That means there are only 70-something days left before I'm done.
I need to start studying to test out of physics. I plan to spend March reading the textbook and the first two weeks of April working problems and taking practice exams. I have to get the test done (and passed, mind you) by April 23rd or so. Right now, I don't even want to consider what happens if that doesn't work out.
We also have to book airfare for our cruise. The airfare is the tricky part. I'm trying to go from Rome to Ireland to visit my friend K. But working flights between my mom and I plus considering price is difficult.

It's my time...to rejuvenate my life.
November is always a crazy month for me. First, it's my birthday month. Second, it's also like 5 of my friends' birthday month. Third, it's Thanksgiving! Fourth, it's the busiest month in school as projects, papers, and exams take place all right before final exam season in December. Fifth, it's American Diabetes Month!
So here we are at the 2nd already...wasn't it just September last week? Sheesh...this year is flying by faster than I can even say it's flying by. I have lots of plans for American Diabetes Month. And I'm definitely excited to start checking some things off the list while exploring some new fun ideas.
