I decided to try the bioidentical hormone treatment. After reading books, studies and general information, I feel that I made an educated decision. I went to a seminar and personally talked to the doctor who founded the clinic. I spent hours on the web looking through positive and negative feedback from research studies, personal stories and major medical journals. And I used my brain.

These changes I wrote about recentlyare going pretty well. I'm choosing better foods to eat, only having human sized portions, and even cutting back on the soda.

 

I cannot believe I just typed that.

 

Soda. Diet soda is a vice I am not ready to give up entirely. I love soda in almost any flavor as long as it's diet odds are I'll like it.

 

But I drink a lot of soda. Way too much to be honest. And although diet soda doesn't seem to affect my blood glucose levels, the salt in it is not good.

Are you hooked on caffeine drinks? They are everywhere! Caffeine is littered throughout cups of coffee, doubled up in cans of energy drinks, and even spilling from D-friendly diet sodas, making it hard to get away from. Maybe this is why so many adults, and teenagers, consume the stuff at a heart-pounding rate. But have you noticed the impact on your blood glucose numbers like I have? It can spike my numbers wicked fast if I am not on top of things. Sure doesn't make my employment at Starbucks any easier, the stuff is diffused into my veins with every breath I take!

How is it that I went through this holiday season with zero visits to the gym and eating a ton of calories - with a net weight gain of only 1/2 pound and a meter average of 133 mg/dl?

 

If I knew the answer to that question, I'd be rich. 

 

I'd bottle the secret and sell it.  Well, I'd give it to you if I knew and liked you, but mostly I'd sell it.  And probably eat the profits.  And you know, that wouldn't be a big deal, because I'd have the secret.  

 

I've got some theories....

 

Karma?  I'm pretty nice.  And I've mostly been good this year in terms of diet and exercise.  Perhaps I'm reaping the karmic benefits of my past good deeds and behaviors?

The most recent heat wave may have passed, but summer is still in full swing -- which means heat-related health alerts. While these issues are not directly related to diabetes, diabetes can confound a heat-related health issue, making it harder to recognize and treat. Heat-related symptoms can mimic sugar-related symptoms and vice-versa, so it is in our best interests to know our normal ranges and reactions to the greatest degree possible.

 

The most basic heat issue is hydration. For some of us, dehydration will cause our blood glucose levels to drop; for others, it will cause those readings to rise. For some of us, the physical stress of dehydration will, at one point or another, trigger an adrenaline response and its associated glycogen release, leading to u-shaped curves (think "Dawn Phenomenon").

After my work function last week, my mom and I met at a resort to spend some quality girl time together. It was much needed for both of us as we haven't been able to spend a lot of time just the two of us doing the things we love to do since I moved four hours away. We went shopping, ate a lot of good food, got massages, and talked non-stop over the weekend.

 

We also had a few drinks in celebration of our vacation. Neither my mother or I drink to get drunk. We like to enjoy a glass of wine or a margarita socially, which is what we did. The first night, I had a glass of white wine with my salmon salad. It was delicious and my mother didn't say much.

Many hot-weather health issues center around proper hydration. My last post discussed how much water we should be drinking, and whether or not fluids other than water counted towards that volume. I finished up by mentioning that in addition to the amount we consume, we need to take into account how quickly we process those fluids, and what should (or should not) be in the fluids we are taking to maintain proper hydration.
