A few days ago, I posted about how we end up being each others' emergency support systems in real life (and occasionally by posting links to resources such as iPump and the Partnership for Prescription Assistance online), and how this made us each to some degree our brothers' keepers.

The first week in August marked the start of the 2010 run of the New York Renaissance Faire, an event in which the most popular exhibitions involve aiming long, pointy objects at impossibly small, circular targets. Whether it's an 8-foot-long lance hooking a three-inch-diameter ring, or a 26" arrow aimed at a bull's eye 100 yards away, or a sword or spear looking to unhinge a 1/2"-diameter ring of chain-mail armour, these are impressive displays of marksmanship and control -- kind of like trying to keep one's blood glucose levels between the mythical "102" and "104" (mg/dl) of glucometer-packaging displays, regardless of what one eats and when. Many of us have been a-twitter about World Diabetes Day, bringing attention to the epidemic proportions of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and the Big Blue Test. Seattle had a bike ride as did Victoria, BC. Philadelphia had an event at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. Those of us in the New York City area celebrated with a huge D-Meetup and pizza party. The indefatiguable Allison set things up in a Midtown office building. At its peak, over 20 Type 1s, Type 2s, and Type 3s gathered to enjoy each other's company and take part in the Big Blue Test.

It's that time of year again -- time to report on this year's results of the WebWarren Cookie Laboratories.
Lest you think I've had a bit too much of the nonexistent "adult" eggnog (or given the outdoor temperatures, the nonexistent hot toddy), The Other Half's parents like to have several varieties of cookies on hand for Christmas Day visitors (i.e., the entire extended family) -- and with his mother no longer able to do the sort of baking she once did, we try to take up a bit of the slack. The first time we did cookie baking up here, I was trying to develop some new cookie recipes, and we brought down the results in a carton repurposed with Christmas wrapping paper and labeled "WEBWARREN COOKIE LABS -- EXPERIMENTAL SAMPLES". The name -- and the mock pretentiousness -- stuck. While were not able to get down south this year, the Cookie Labs have been in full force.

A recent DirecTV ad sent a number of d-tweeters to our keyboards, talking about the newest TV "superhero". The illuminated blue ring that would have been the dial on a rotary phone looks similar to the World Diabetes Day logo, suggesting that the cops in trouble might be calling for the help of "Diabetes Man". All things considered, the light-up blue ring on the telephone dial would have been cool had it connected to a diabetes crisis center ("I'm out of insulin and I can't get to my doc until a week from Friday!" "I'm reading 400 and I've injected almost a whole vial of insulin, but it still isn't going down!" "Diabetes sucks! (READ MORE)

Today marked both the beginning of November and the beginning of Diabetes Awareness Month. There are a boat load of different activities scheduled throughout the month, and while I would love to participate in each and every one of them, I know it’s just not humanly possible. So, I’ve put together a list of the activities to which I’ll devote some time and effort.
First and foremost is the Going Blue initiative I started over on my blog, My Diabetic Heart. I draped the site in Diabetes Blue and will leave it that way until the end of November. Fellow D-Bloggers were invited to do the same.

Every year, the "blue versus red" argument comes up as diabetes bloggers and patient advocates discuss the relative merits of the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Diabetes Research Institute, the International Diabetes Foundation, and World Diabetes Day. This week, however, the color of diabetes is pink.
Diabetes UK pink.

Today's DBlog Week Prompt: Let’s end our week on a high note and blog about our “Diabetes Hero”. It can be anyone you’d like to recognize or admire, someone you know personally or not, someone with diabetes or maybe a Type 3. It might be a fabulous endo or CDE. It could be a d-celebrity or role-model. It could be another DOC member. It’s up to you – who is your Diabetes Hero??
This afternoon, I decided to venture into the past. At my college graduation party, my family wrote me special notes in a journal to wish me the best on the new chapter in my life. I've read them a dozen times when I need some encouragement, love, or family wisdom. But today was different.
