It's very rare that I miss a day of work. VERY rare. I've called in sick only a handful of times in the last four years of my working life. I typically am a "bite the bullet" kind of girl and work at least a few hours when I'm feeling ill. So when I do call in sick, I'm usually very sick.

Are you hooked on caffeine drinks? They are everywhere! Caffeine is littered throughout cups of coffee, doubled up in cans of energy drinks, and even spilling from D-friendly diet sodas, making it hard to get away from. Maybe this is why so many adults, and teenagers, consume the stuff at a heart-pounding rate. But have you noticed the impact on your blood glucose numbers like I have? It can spike my numbers wicked fast if I am not on top of things. Sure doesn't make my employment at Starbucks any easier, the stuff is diffused into my veins with every breath I take!

No, not THAT kind of change of life! I was laid off from my job 10 days ago. Boy, talk about a life change! I am doing a little contract work, so I don't know what to call my current position. "Stay at home Mom" has such negative connotations and I find "Full-time Mother" offensive because I've been a full-time mom since my son was born, regardless of my employment status.
My 4 year old has gone from 9-10 hour days at a daycare center, to 3 hours at a small local preschool. The rest of the time he's with me. My 14 month old is with me 24/7, or so it seems. My husband does step up so I can maintain some other adult relationships. What those will be and how often I'll get a night off remain to be negotiated.

This is not a post about retinopathy or losing eye sight.
This is a post about how easy it is to see what is right in front of us, what we deal with each day, and miss the bigger pictures.
When it comes to diabetes, sometimes the day to day management and challenges can be so much to handle, we forget bigger picture blessings like relative good health, the ability to retain employment and to take care of our families, and the tools we have at our disposal to improve control.

Since I'm applying for so many jobs, my mind is focused on employment lately. The best jobs for me, benefits, hours, salary, and all the side perks of being employed. I'm excited about this stage in my life even though I have no idea where it might end up.
Diabetes and employment can be tricky though. Especially when your health issues have been aired to the world via Blogabetes. I would never trade the honesty and the vulnerability that I've shared with you guys here, but it does make me wonder about how much my health will affect the job search and the final job offer.

When I first moved away for college back in early 2007, my health was really at its worst. We still had no idea what was going on with me...just a list of symptoms and doctors who couldn't tell me what was wrong. So I moved out on my own into a 1 bedroom apartment a little over an hour from my mom's house and less than an hour from my dad's house.
The first semester was extremely rough. I had several breakdowns on my bathroom floor, several moments of desperation, several calls home that left my parents worried. I tried to stay on top of things, but the stress made it nearly impossible.

As most of you know by now, I've been thrust into the job market after finishing my degree. It was something that I was prepared for, but definitely not at the same time. It's been hectic, stressful, and informative. Some days, I feel on top of the world. And others, I feel like the world is crashing in on me.
My degree was in sociology with a minor in women's and gender studies. I also spent a good deal focusing on health and illness. Now, what can I do with this? Well pretty much anything. There's communications, non-profit, public relations, government work, sales, and so on.

Today has been an amazing day. First, I got a job interview from one of the resumes that I mailed out to businesses in my new town. Second, I finalized my apartment and moving situation (although I did sadly find out that I have no microwave in my new apartment). And finally, I received my graduate school acceptance!
I am so very excited that I've gotten in. My family had no doubts in my ability, but I must admit that part of me was scared that it just wouldn't work out. I knew that I am a strong candidate and student, but I just feared that my dreams wouldn't be what God or the school wanted for me. Here we are though! An offical graduate school enrollee!

I spent the last six days in Mexico with my mom on a quick vacation. Now that I'm back I feel a little overwhelmed at everything that's happening. I cannot believe how quickly this year has flown by, especially the last two months.
There's a lot on my mind right now from laundry to tuition being due soon. Tuition that I don't exactly have. But my biggest thought at the moment is about employment.
When I got off the plane on Wednesday, I had several voicemails. One from a non-profit that I applied with several weeks ago. And another about a temporary position. I've been working with temp agencies for several weeks now although I have yet been able to accept any jobs. I get calls pretty frequently, but things just keep seeming to come up.
