While the sequence is played comedically, the reality of the situation is anything but.

 

Local insects congregated in the early evening rains before Hurricane Irene passed through our local area, taking refuge in window frames, sneaking through decades-old screens, and so on. Since our air-conditioning is limited to the bedroom, I am loathe to close windows unless and until necessary -- when the temperature drops, or when the incoming rain becomes strong enough to threaten whatever I have sitting near them. This has the side effect of making me a "target of opportunity" on those occasions in which those windows must be closed. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to insect bites.

When things couldn't possibly get any worse ...

 

"Hi dad, I'm 31."

 

It's not something you ever want to hear. That is, unless it was his 31st birthday and he was just calling to remind me.

 

It's certainly not something you want to hear on the other end of the phone when your son is at a friend's house and you really don't know the father too well are you're miles away from him in a strip mall buying a brass turtle.  

 

We've only just begun letting him go to friends' homes without us - dealing with diabetes on his own. He's maybe done it three times prior to this one and all has gone well.

 

A.  He knows to check his sugar if he feels low.

 

B. He's wired with piercing alarms that go off when he's too low or too high.

Last Friday, The Other Half and I decided it was time to take advantage of some of the new phones and specials and upgrade our old mobiles to new smartphones. For various reasons, we settled on a pair of LG Ally phones, on the Android operating system.

Today Susanne is meeting with the guidance counselor, Charlie’s teacher, the school nurse and the principal to go over our revised 504 plan. Someone from the district will also be there to make sure everything is legit. I wish I could be there with her but I can’t get out of work.

 

Sometimes I wonder if we’re going overboard with our 504 plan. It’s sounding less like a constructive 504 plan and more like an unreasonable list of demands.

 

Take item #4 for instance.

My husband just switched jobs, which is always a headache when it comes to health insurance. If you are lucky enough to be allowed to start right away, with no waiting period, there's still that period of limbo when the old insurance has been cancelled (and man, they don't waste any time doing that) and when your new insurance is in the system.

 

Of course, Olivia needed insulin while we were in limbo. I went to CVS to pick it up and it was going to cost $335.99 for three bottles of insulin. Needless to say, we can't afford that.

It may be strange or alarming, but I've often imagined being kidnapped. I watch a lot of TV crime dramas, so the thoughts tend to race through my head. I imagine my reaction as a human, as a woman, and as a diabetic.

 

As a human, I know that I'm not giving up without a fight. My life is precious and valuable, whether someone else sees that or not. I would try every plan to escape or leave every clue to allow the police to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.

 

As a woman, the same truths apply. I'm not giving up without a fight. I refuse to give in to whatever threats unless I've tried my hardest to get away or delay the action.

I woke up this morning about 30 minutes before my alarm to answer a call from nature. I stumble to the restroom and as usual I set my insulin pump on the sink counter. I should explain that I have a relatively small bathroom so the sink is pretty much half of the room. Well, no sooner do I set my pump down that it slides off and slams on the floor.
Ouch!
I have had my pump fall before but this one sounded extra hard. I leaned over and picked up my poor pump to see if it was okay. It was not. The screen was blank and even though I closed my eyes and wished for it to be fixed, it did not work. (READ MORE)

I can remember the time when I had my worst low blood sugar. As diabetics, we all have a "hypoglycemia story". Some instances stand out more than others. Some of us can't recall our bad moments because we were probably passed out from being so low. I can actually say, proudly I might add, that I have never once lost consciousness in all my 13 years of living with this "AWESOME" (sarcasm) disease. I have never actually had to use the infamous glucagon kit. However, that's not to say that I haven't had some darn scary times. (READ MORE)
