To the families of special-needs children all across the country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters.

I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.

Gov. Palin, I can't tell you how much this means to me and my family. For eight long years it felt as if we didn't have a friend in the White House. Phew! Thank you for being my friend. What a relief. I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting that. I too am a parent of a special-needs child. My 6-year-old son Charlie has been living with type 1 diabetes since he was a baby.

As my friend, I'm sure you and Senator McCain will lift the restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research the moment you take office. That's what friends do, right? Friends are there for you when you need them most.

The politically anticipated Iowa caucuses offer a strong foreshadow on who will take lead towards being the next United States president. The two current party front-runners in this race were decided tonight, giving Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee a head start. Without doubt- health care reform is a hot topic for presidential candidates. This is the look on what Barack Obama and, type-2 diabetic, Mike Huckabee promise in their health care platforms. I received the normal JDRF research newsletter the other day. As usual, I perused the updates on diabetes. There was a large article on the new stem cell legislation movement, but I quickly passed over it. But two articles did catch my eye.

One was regarding "Insulin Fragment" Therapy, which I hadn't heard about before this newsletter. A study from the UK showed that "proinsulin peptide" therapy could seemingly restore the immune system without any adverse side effects (like the immunotherapy treatments for pancreas and cell transplants). More research had to be done, but it was still an important milestone.

The other article had to do with protein regeneration for adult beta cells. It was a snippet of an article regarding the prospect of regeneration and replication of beta cells for type 1s. All it did was leave hope. Hope for regrowth. Hope for a life without diabetes.

During our 504 meeting with the school staff, my wife and I mentioned that we'd like to read a short children's book to Charlie's classmates so that they could have a basic understanding of diabetes. Surely they would want to know why he was putting a blood sample into a strange device every couple of hours and why he was able to eat at times that they weren't.
The teacher and the principal thought it was a good idea, but the district official, who was there to make sure everything was kosher, suggested the principal have a look at the book before approving A Ruler, a Number 2 Pencil and Diabetes by Dr. Troy Apaches.
My initial thought was that this was strange. I mean it's a published children's book. What could possibly be offensive? Though, truth be told, it had been years since I read the book. I suppose I could have forgotten about some of the content. (READ MORE)
