When we got out of the car, the first thing Charlie did was adjust his "Charlie's Angels" t-shirt so that his insulin pump was visible to his fellow diabetic comrades.
Then he scoped the area for others who sported similar machinery. If there was a "D" signal on the pump, he would have surely activated it.
Calling all diabetics! Calling all diabetics! Rendezvous at the Tastykake table in 5. Tell your mothers you feel low.
We had a gorgeous day filled with sunshine and the support of great friends and family who walked beside us for a cure at Rutgers University's agricultural campus.

On average, I test seven times a day. It can range from five to twelve, depending on activity, emotions, symptoms, and my memory.
Today, I've already tested four times and I'm only half way through the day. Yesterday, I tested nine times. The day before, I tested eight.
Obviously, I go through bottles of strips quickly. Twenty-five to a container doesn't make it very far. Sometimes two days, sometimes four.

I never thought Susanne would actually go. Not with the 3 year old. He can't sit still for more than five minutes. But we both agreed it would be pretty cool if she could swing it.
She called me at work with a definite zeal in her voice.
"I'm here!"
It's not every day that a potential vice president comes to your town; to your local middle school.
Joe and Jill Biden came to town to talk about education, the economy and healthcare. The only obstacle standing in Susanne's way was Ben. They needed to arrive at the school an hour-and-a-half before the Bidens were to speak. That's a lot of patience to ask of a 3 year old (our 3 year old). It would be nothing short of a miracle if Ben was to last long enough to see them speak.

In trying to raise money for diabetes research, I've definitely noticed the effect of our declining economy. People just don't have money to give this year.
With a month left before our team assembles for the Walk to Cure Diabetes, I've reached the stage of our JDRF fundraising campaign where I get a little desperate. When just about every person, place or thing in my periphery is fair game.
For example, driving home from a soccer game and crossing the Delaware River toll bridge. Hmm, I thought. Tolls.

I've always been blessed with fairly amazing insurance. My dad worked for the city of Houston for several decades, so our family has always had the group policy with a large subscriber base and it's stayed the same since I was born.
After he retired, we kept the same insurance as part of his pension plan. Our co-pays rarely change for either doctors or prescriptions. They pay roughly eighty percent of most procedures and devices. And since I was blessed with a stable income family, I'm able to afford the $45 copays and twenty percent of the pump.
But in the last few years and with the new health issues, my health bills seem to be piling up. And with the economy the way it is, I'm starting to stress about how to pay for some of the necessary (and probably not so necessary) items.

Today's lunch was a goodbye lunch for a colleague who is retiring. Again. We went to a Mexican place that had rockin' chimichangas. (I so love chimmies, but man does my blood sugar pay for it…it's been four hours and I'm still in the upper 200s despite taking oodles of insulin.)
As we munched on chips and salsa while waiting for our entrees, we asked B if he had any plans yet. Was he going to travel right away? Just sit around and do nothing? What?
"Well, we'll probably do some babysitting first," B said with a chuckle. B and his wife H don't have children and from what I can understand adore watching their grand nieces and nephews.
"Will you go to California or will they come here?" R asked.
"New Jersey," B said.
It was loud and B can be softspoken, so it was difficult to keep up even though he was sitting right next to me.

I got laid off last week.
I got a call from my (now former) boss, whom I love, care, and have deep respect for very much, on Tuesday. Her mood and energy were off. I could tell she was under a lot of (mind-made) stress. I was told that I would need to call in for a phone meeting with some of the higher-ups and board members in the organization. My mind and thoughts began to wonder, like everyone's does, when you get that feeling
inside. That feeling where you just KNOW something is off.

I've been somewhat ambivalent about today's rally surrounding the United Nations Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases. The libertarian "party line" is that the United Nations does little more than abrogate nation-states' sovereignty and forcibly redistribute income from the wealthier nations to the less-wealthy, dampening incentives for innovation and destroying private charity efforts which would otherwise improve the lives of those in need. On the other hand, the prospect of spending time with friends I seldom see in-person is an opportunity not to be missed.
It's a dilemma I'd been wrestling with for a couple of months, and friendship was winning over politics. However, neither friendship nor politics had the choice to decide.
The deciding factor was money.

Like most companies around the country, mine is in the middle of open enrollment. Which means that now is the time of year when we choose our benefits for the coming year.
Naturally, there are changes and cost increases. That's just the way it goes -- even in a good economy. I feel fortunate to work for a company that provides much of the premium costs for my health insurance. Just for premiums for me and the kids I'll pay around $350 per month. And I get that that's cheap considering other people's circumstances.
Anyway. One of the cool things is that our insurance pays preventive care at 100%. So annual physicals for me and the kids, my well woman exam, etc. don't require a co-pay. Which is pretty cool.

I have a view of downtown. The closet is huge. The bathtub is amazing. I am so incredibly pleased with my new apartment. After all the moving and stairs, my furniture is mostly arranged. And almost all the boxes are unpacked. I'm so excited.
I finally feel like my life is falling more into place here in the new city. I am waiting on one more piece to fall into place, but for the most part, I'm thrilled at the way that life has played out. Since graduating college last year, life has taken several turns that I didn't expect. Yet here I am, blessed in every way imaginable.
The new apartment really is splendid. I am so happy that I made the move. I'm closer to Marvin and closer to work. The space is great. I love the view. I love that everything is updated and new. It's nice to be in a place that wasn't built last century.
