I wrote recently about my first fast. I loved the experience and I hope you decide to look into it forImage credit:  Bulinna on Flickr yourself to see if it’s something you’re interested in doing. But now that a few days have past, and I’m back to eating, “normal” again, I wanted to let everyone know how things are going.

 



Since the fast I have had a few highs, some mild depression (psychological, as well as physiological), but overall some WONDERFUL blood sugars!

Maybe I was expecting some sort of Christmas miracle or something but yesterday I was completely out of control.
We had our Christmas Breakfast at my unofficially adopted sister Candee's house. She was up early brewing coffee, scrambling eggs, frying bacon and sausage, and slicing up coffee cake and other breakfasty pastries so we could all dig in when we got there. (READ MORE)

I eat too much.


I know this. I have always had a love for food and an inability to stop when I should. I eat and eat until I feel miserable and then I get more upset for not stopping when I should have!


It's a terrible cycle.


All of this overeating has been the source of my weight gain and the reason my doctor thinks I am someone else. The worst part about it all is the way my clothes are fitting. Or I should say, not fitting.


So recently I started on a journey to lose 40 pounds. So far I am down 5 pounds and am hopeful for a healthy chunk gone this week.


My strategy right now is just tackling portion size and the amount of food I consume.

When it comes to sitting down to eat a meal, I've always been a bit of a shoveler. Growing up we ate in front of the TV and we still do from time to time. I'm embarrassed to admit I usually go in for seconds too. Sometimes, if I'm eating something particularly tasty, I'll start planning my second bowlful before I'm even halfway finished with my first round.
So trying Paul McKenna's concept of eating conciously has been a bit of an eye opener. What really convinced me to give it a go is when he explained how many of us spend so much time thinking about food yet so little time eating it. It's true. I spend a lot of time thinking about food, planning meals, craving things I won't allow myself, etc. But when it comes time to sit down to eat, I shovel it in so fast I barely taste it. (READ MORE)

I haven't been eating right at all lately. I know what everyone will say because my mother has told me the same things already. I need to focus, I need to keep my eating habits on track, I need to stay healthy. But right now, I don't need to be told this. I need to find a way myself, on my own, to fix this.

 

I'm just not very hungry lately. Or if I'm hungry, I have no appetite. I can go hours upon hours without eating or even thinking of eating. And when my stomach finally growls, I peruse the pantry and come up with nothing. I want nothing.

 

But then there are these times where I just want to eat and eat. I'm not hungry, but pounds of food seem ideal. I want cookies, donuts, Coke, and cake. I just eat and eat, until I just get tired of eating.

Myth 6.

"If you take insulin, or more than one type of insulin -- or you wear an insulin pump -- or you have to take pills and not-eat certain foods -- you have the 'bad kind' of diabetes."

  • Fact: There is no good kind of diabetes. Each type of diabetes has its challenges in maintaining relatively normal blood glucose levels. Each type of diabetes, left unchecked, can cause complications and death.
  • Fact: The really, really bad kinds of diabetes are diabetes that has not been diagnosed and diabetes that is not actively managed, whether by pills, insulin, and/or diet, and that is not well-monitored (by home glucose testing).

Thursday, my college youth group is having a Fourth of July picnic. I'm half excited, but half wary of all things food related. The diabetic in me is curious, anxious, and completely nervous about what will be served, how it was prepared, and so on. The diabetic in me is wanting to be a total control freak...but unfortunately, this isn't a situation where I can be. This situation calls for a little gambling and adventure-taking.

 

Ever since I started venturing out on my own, I've struggled with food. I want healthy choices. I want choices that won't send my blood sugar through the roof. And mostly, I want choices that I will actually eat (as I'm a fairly picky eater). All those things combined leaves me feeling like I have to make the restaurant choice or at least give plenty of acceptable options...while trying to make everyone happy in what they're putting in their own mouths.

At some time during our diabetic self-discovery, we are told that diabetes -- like most chronic illnesses -- is often accompanied by a second "D": depression. Considering the amount of time we need to put into consideration of our diets, exercise, drugs, and doctor visits -- and how much that takes out of what would otherwise be disposable income -- it's hardly surprising. Nor should it come to anyone's surprise that this level of attention to detail often smacks of another mental-health issue: obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD. It is considered "normal" -- even encouraged -- for people with diabetes to arrange our lives around our blood glucose levels, logging every single reading, every single milligram of metformin or subunit of insulin, weighing and logging every single morsel of food or fluid that passes our lips, every step of exercise, every moment of every day of our lives. When I go grocery shopping, I rarely buy junk food. If there's a big game (Yeah, sorry about last night, all you Rockies fans. Sort of sorry anyway. OK, not really sorry at all....), I might buy a bag of chips. Once in a great while, I'll buy brownie mix or I'll make cookies. It's not a regular occurrence around here, however, mainly because we don't have the money in our grocery budget to buy crap like that and also because, well, it's crap. Of little or no nutritional value.

One of the main reasons, though, is because Olivia will just eat it all up. A pan of brownies will be gone in a day. A bag of Doritos? Two sittings. It's ridiculous.

A bedtime number of 91 with 1.9 units active? Are you insane? We both know I can’t send him to bed with 1.9 units of active insulin. Am I the mouse to your cheese? The fish to your worm? You want me to give him carbs, don’t you? You leave me no choice and we both know it. This is why I hate you!

 

 "Here, Charlie. Eat this."

 

45 minutes later:

 

88 with over a unit active??? You do know it’s the season premier of Heroes tonight, right? What am I supposed to do with 88? You know I have to give him another slight boost. You’re setting me up, aren’t you? Or are you? No, you are. Damn it! This is why I hate you!
