A pilot in Denton, Texas, made an emergency landing near a freeway yesterday because he felt lightheaded. Only one media source stated he was diabetic. Yet the article made every major newspaper in the area.
Thursday, I drove down the highway in rush hour traffic digging through my bag and eating everything I had with me. As I stuffed the glucose tabs into my mouth, I sat wondering about my fellow drivers. Were any of them diabetic? Had they driven this low before? Would they be mad because I was driving low (granted we didn't reach speeds above 15 mph)?

Every day with diabetes is a little different from the last. There are ups and downs. There are good days, bad days, and something in between. I never know what diabetes will toss my way. I never know when it will knock me to the ground or give me the strength to rise above the ashes.
Today was a fairly normal day, with a few diabetes kinks. So I decided to track a day with my diabetes...to show the world what it's really like inside these walls.
11:25am: Oversleeping is the enemy right now. And my blood sugar starts out high at 160. I'll take that over another low like last night though (a sneaky 57 that left me with no symptoms at all).

Did you hear about this dad that found himself on the wrong side of the diabetes tracks? This may be ancient news by now, viewed from the internet eyes of the informed masses, but his story is touching and thought provoking. In North Platte, Nebraska a six year old little boy took over steering his father's vehicle after the man passed out from low blood sugar. While driving home from a restaurant dinner, the dad's blood sugar tanked and sent him slumping back into the driver's seat, without accelerating, but with the car still rolling down the road. His young son hopped on his dad's lap, grabbed the wheel and steered around until a patrolling police officer could intervene.

I'm a little torn on how to react to President Obama's nomination of Sonia Sotomayer. And this torn-ness is based only on the diabetes issue.
Part of me thinks: Way to go! This is awesome! I'm so happy that a high-profile person other than an athlete or actor is bringing light to diabetes and showing that we can indeed do anything and that diabetes is not an obstacle.
And part of me thinks: Why is this even a stinking issue? Ok, I know why it's an issue but why should Sotomayer -- or anyone for that matter -- be judged on whether or not they can perform a job simply because of diabetes?
It is for this reason that I chose to "hide" my diabetes during my last two job interviews. I wanted to be judged based on my qualifications and my sparkling personality not on whether I was capable of doing a job with diabetes.

Driving over the highway on a route I usually don't take I was thinking about the letter I had just drafted to the bank that holds our mortgage in Missouri. I was pleading with the bank president because we see no hope for selling that house and even if we do we won't recoup the money we've put into it in the last 15 months.
I had butterflies. I felt strange. I felt light and heavy. It was a weird feeling considering how confident I felt as I was writing the letter. That's when it dawned on me that I actually felt low. It wasn't about the letter after all.
I try not to test while I'm driving -- especially on the highway -- but as soon as I realized what was happening I knew I needed to test right that second.

I can feel it. Mom and I are standing in line to pay for some clothes for an event I'm going to on Saturday night with The Mr. I'm OK, but I know a low is coming.
I don't want to alert Mom. I don't want her to get scared for me. I look around to see if there's anywhere I can sort of inconspicuously check my sugar.
We walk to the car and I get in the driver's seat. I've forgotten the potential low for some reason. Must not have been too bad. I start driving. It's dark and I'm in a parking lot I don't know very well. We have to do a lot of maneuvering through the parking lot. Then there's construction on the street.
By the time we get to a clear place on the street, I start to feel that slightly shaky feeling that often tells me that I'm not low, but I'm dropping. It's not a full-blown low, but I know it's coming. I can feel it.

There has been much heat in the diabetes online community concerning the new Medicaid/Medicare restrictions on paying for blood glucose testing supplies for people with diabetes, including the belief that these limitations will quickly replace current private-insurance coverage policies. We're seeing some of those repercussions here as The Other Half has just been informed that instead of covering testing supplies ad libitum (as many as his doctor writes for, for whichever brand she writes for), they will only cover OneTouch or Accu-Chek strips, to a maximum of 51 strips per month for people with diabetes who do not require injectable insulin, and 204 strips per month for those who do require it.
