We all know that diabetics have an increased risk of everything from heart disease to kidney disease to glaucoma. Because of this increased risk, it is very important for diabetics to have regular checkups in many fields. Personally, I am always scheduling appointments for one thing or another. My main appointments include the following: (READ MORE)

I got a call this morning saying that my appointment with the new endocrinologist next week had to be rescheduled. So I called into the appointments line of the clinic asking for her next available, only to be told that it wasn't until June 10th at the earliest. Three weeks away doesn't sound so bad...except that I can't have any appointments from June 1st to July 6th because of summer school.

This morning I set about getting Lantus and figuring out the doctor situation from yesterday. So I followed my plan to call the new doctor's nurse first then the CDE I know at the clinic if that didn't work. I was prepared to raise a little "cane" if need be, but desperately hoped they would make it easy.
I called the new doctor's nurse wanting to speak to the nice one that I spoke to yesterday. Unfortunately, she wasn't in. So I ended up speaking to another nurse, who was quite rude. When she first began the phone call, she wouldn't let me speak to tell her about the issue which got the whole thing off to a rocky start.

I'm really frustrated today. Not because of blood sugars (which have stayed between 110 and 140 all day) or insulin or any of those other details of this disease. I'm frustrated because I can't change doctors without completely stressing out my life.
I received a suggestion from my old pediatric endo about a doctor in town, so I checked the insurance to make sure I'd be covered. And sure enough...he's not on my acceptable provider list. Even if I wanted to pay out of network, I can't. Some rule about providers being within 75 miles of my home and I'm not on a PPO.

After a month of contemplation, phone calls, and hassle, I've finally made an appointment with a new doctor. If you haven't followed along, my old endo wasn't being as cooperative or helpful as I wanted him to be. So I decided to pursue a new endo that might walk me through the next few years of my life as I prepare for the "real world," babies, and possibly even marriage. I called several doctors recommended by my pediatric endo, only to find out that my insurance either will not let me see them or I'd have to go about a massive ordeal just to get an appointment.

Since I've made the leap to find a new doctor, I figured it's about time that I make a list of what I need/want in my new doctor. I've never seriously thought about it, even though I've been through many doctors. But since I'm a thinking adult, I might as well figure it out.
When I was diagnosed, I don't think I got a choice on who I saw for my diabetes care. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have liked anyone, even if I did get to choose. I was a pretty ticked off little 4 year old. I saw that first doctor, Dr. Sherman (who was amazing, despite my dislike of doctors), up until I was about 10. When she moved away, I stayed within the same system that I was in (it was the best pediatric diabetes care in the state). I had a choice of about five doctors.

My dad and I have our endo appointments on Wednesday. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be going right now. I already tried to move it back a week, but the doctors were both booked. I'm just not in the right place to see her.
For one, my stress level has been high enough with my family member's issues, the job hunt, moving back home, and all the rest of life. I'm just not in the mood to go through the endo process...the guilt, the hate, the annoyance of this disease. I'm doing fine on my own, on a regular basis. But going to the doctor brings everything to the front, it makes it so much more real.

In googling my doctor the other day, I came across a website that lets you rate your doctors and leave specific comments. In reading my doctor's reviews, I had to laugh. Many were spot on. His punctuality rating was far below par. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, he averaged a measly 1.5 for punctuality. His staff also got very low ratings for helpfulness. If he wasn't such a great doctor, I doubt he'd be able to stay in business.
The primary complaint was the wait and his reputation in that department preceeds him. When I asked my primary care physician for a referal to see him, she laughed and told me to bring a good book, because I'd be waiting for quite some time. And it's true. A three-hour wait is standard, and that's just in the waiting room. Once you get into the back office, its usually another hour. (READ MORE)

When you go to the doctor, do you go prepared with a list of questions for the doctor? That was one of the questions during last weeks DSMA session on Twitter.
I would say that about 95% of the time, I do go prepared with both a list of questions and a list of the medications that I'm currently taking. And I do so because I have way too many medications to remember them all, and usually have a number of questions that either April or I want answered.
I've been asked a few times, "Why do you take a list of medications? Doesn't your doctor already know which you're taking?"
