There's a time and place for every conversation. I know this sounds weird coming from the girl from the funeral family who routinely talks about all things death at the dinner table and who isn't squeamish about much. But seriously, there are some things I just don't want to focus on, say, during my annual well woman exam.
Maybe I was just set off a bit when E. gave me the diabetes look of pity when, in response to her asking how things were with my diabetes, I told her that I found out I am type 1 and not type 2. I think I zoned out right then as she began telling me her history with diabetes.

Last night my family and I went over to my cousin's house for dinner. Her dad, my uncle, was in town from Texas so we wanted to visit with him before he left. Our other cousin was there with her kids and we had a really lovely dinner. (READ MORE)

The last blog I wrote was called, "Life Changing Events" and it got a lot of comments from a variety of different people. I really do appreciate the feedback I get from each of you. One of the reasons why I enjoy seeing your comments is it allows me to respond back to each of you and I think having the ability to interact and reach out to one another is key. Another reason why it is good to leave a comment is because other users, who are on this site, can see and respond back to your comments as well. This generates discussions and helps people share their feelings on different topics. This way, hopefully, little is overlooked when discussing an important or relevant issue to you.

I may write more about this on my personal blog - do check it out if you haven't already.
I have been wanting for a couple of weeks to write a post about a play I had the pleasure of taking in with my blogger friends Kerri, Julia, and Shannon. So, rather than write about the letter H, I'm going to write about Some Things Are Private . The play is showing at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI, where I have the pleasure of being employed.
Live theater is a fantastic medium. What other opportunity do people have, in this day and age, to sit together in a room and watch a moment, a day, a lifetime unfold before their very eyes? I am fortunate to work for a theater that also offers the audience the opportunity to stay after the show and discuss and reflect upon what they've seen. The discussions are always interesting, funny, and thought-provoking. If you've never been and would like to go, leave me a comment, I can make it happen. (READ MORE)

In the last several weeks at work I've gotten two "Is that your phone?" comments about Dex, one "Is that your pager?" comment about Toohey and one "I think we just violated HIPPA" comment. Oh, and two very long, in-depth conversations about diabetes, pumps and continuous glucose monitors. It's interesting how much of this information had become visceral to me... I found myself explaining things I hadn't thought I would need to but realized that basic diabetes knowledge is not so common.
Actually, I take that back. Some people know enough about diabetes to be dangerous, but what they have no clue about is pumps and CGM. Which is fine. In fact, today I told a co-worker after a lengthy conversation about how the pump and the CGM work that I don’t mind talking about it. I clarified by saying as long as I wasn’t being judged and people who were asking questions were willing to accept that I am the expert.

One of the more heated discussions going through the diabetes online community is whether or not type 1 diabetes should be renamed to avoid it being lumped in with the public perception of type 2 diabetes. "Don't blame me because my pancreas decided to crap out on me!" is the rallying call -- implying, rightly or wrongly, that type 2 diabetes is always caused by the person with diabetes, through a combination of poor diet choices and poor lifestyle choices. Many people with type 2 diabetes -- particularly the young, fit, and not-obese -- also take issue with that perception.

From time to time, a heated discussion will erupt around the terms and phrases "prediabetes", "borderline diabetes", and "beating diabetes". The basic gist of the debate goes like this:
Someone will post that he was told he has "borderline diabetes" or "prediabetes", or that he had type 2 diabetes, but since he changed his diet, got off his diabetes medications, and has normal lab results, he has reversed or cured his diabetes.

The Mr. and I had one of those discussions tonight. The kind where a lot of stuff was laid out on the table, things were gotten off chests, things were explained. Yep, it was one of those where we had both let the little things ball up and they had finally gotten to the boiling point.
One of the things we discussed was what I eat, how I bolus and why my blood sugar can be such a roller coaster sometimes. Not they why behind those things but The Mr.'s lack of understanding of how diabetes works. The simple answer, at least for someone who understands diabetes, is that this is the nature of type 1 diabetes. It just is what it is and sometimes it's unpredictable.

"How was the lesson?" The Mr. asked when No. 2 and I returned from her guitar lesson this afternoon.
"It was embarassing."
Last Christmas No. 2 got a guitar and we promised her lessons. Six months later we finally fulfilled that promise. I found a guitar teacher near us who taught out of his home. He had several jazz albums to his name and scores of good references on his web site.
I have had countless discussions with No. 2 about her behavior during her lessons. It's difficult to describe, but she just isn't herself. Her voice is different, she often talks too much, and doesn't play when the teacher very clearly wants her to. In fact, there are several times when he says "Go ahead and play that song" and she doesn't hop to it.

My Tuesday schedule got shifted around, reshifted, bent, folded, spindled, and mutilated, leaving me the option of taking lunch at Quizno's — something I'd not done since before diagnosis. As I'm finishing up my Chicken Caesar salad, a heavyset woman walks in to chat with the girl behind the food prep counter. Either a co-worker or a regular customer, I think, by the familiarity of their conversation.
"Are you eating today?" the Quizno's girl asks.
"No, we had to taste too much today. Cakes, cookies, everything. That stuff's no good for my diabetes."
The conversation continues, with the customer — who I'm beginning to believe works in the bakery department of the Shop-Rite two doors down — mentioning "diabetes" at least once more.
