Did anyone catch the new TLC show, "I Can Make You Thin"? I saw the commercials for it and thought it sounded a bit wacky, but I wanted to check it out anyway. I set the DVR to record it, but it recorded Jon & Kate Plus 8 instead.
I watched part of the show as a rerun this weekend and I have to say it really does sound like such a common sense approach to eating. On the first show, he premiered his 4 Golden Rules, which are:
1. When You Are Hungry, Eat. This sounds like such a no-brainer, doesn't it? But I have to admit, there are plenty of times when I'm hungry and don't eat because it's not meal time and I'm "on a diet." I didn't see the whole show, but I have to guess part of this is if you aren't hungry, don't eat. And I'm sure many of us have eaten when we weren't hungry. (READ MORE)

With all the talk of New Year's Resolutions and dieting, I keep coming across advice to keep a food diary. The articles usually point out that research shows keeping a food diary "even for just one day" can aid your weight loss efforts. (I haven't been able to find these studies, but maybe I'm just using the wrong search engine or key words.)
Keeping a food journal has been part of my routine for a very long time now. In fact, I have several editions of notebooks dedicated to logging every morsel of food that goes into my mouth (along with blood sugar readings and insulin dosing, of course).
It's also a cornerstone to the Weight Watchers program. "If you bite it, write it" is a common phrase heard in meetings. My leader, Kim, started what we call "The Magic Traveling Journal." The 12-week planner gets passed around to a different group member each week. (READ MORE)

Spring Break is coming up in three weeks. I'm heading out to the tropics. My wardrobe: swimsuits, shorts, tank tops and short skirts. Of course, I'm thinking about how my body is going to look in a bikini and hip-hugging shorts. I decided I need to lose the extra pounds I put on in the last few weeks (amazing how fast it jumps up without you even noticing). (READ MORE)

I have had some major hurdles in my life and recently have been jumping over them one by one. Not with ease or speed but with planning, determination, and most of all accountability.
The hurdle I have now is weight loss. I have been fat all of my life (except right before I was diagnosed) and now it is time to shed those pounds. I joined weight watchers a while ago which I know I have mentioned here but I was just recently away for three weeks due to three things. One weigh in I skipped because I was just tired and slept in, another when I was sick, and the last was when we went out of town.
This last weekend I finally went back to weigh in for the first time in 2008. It was not pretty. I had gained 7 pounds in 3 weeks! I knew I had gained so it was not a total shock but there is a part of me that hopes for some sort of gravitational miracle as soon as I step on the scale. That did not happen of course. Why is it so hard to get back on track after you fall off the diet wagon? Each day, I start out with good intentions, but somewhere along the line, my eating has gone straight to pot.
I think it started almost a month ago now, right after getting fasting bloodwork done at my endo's office. I "celebrated" with a breakfast at McDonald's, something I'd been craving for a while. Then I had a few run-ins with a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, waffle fries (dipped in mayo) and cole slaw.
After that was the Snickerdoodle incident (which I blamed on my friend Lizzy for introducing me to the sweet, slightly cinnamon flavored, sugar cookies at Whole Foods). Following closely on its heels was the chocolate chip cookie catastrophe. Now I'm in the midst of a full-blown cupcake bender.
Who do I think I am? What in the world makes me think I can eat these foods without consequences? (READ MORE)

Happy Halloween! I suspect it is only in the USA that Halloween has taken on such huge proportions. It's the number two holiday for decoration sales. There are probably a lot of interesting psychological reasons why Americans are drawn to a holiday all about appearing to be someone else; but that's a post for a different forum.
As a person with type 2 diabetes, I really dislike the candy aspect of the celebration. In all honesty, I really LIKE the candy aspect, but dislike having to try and restrain myself. It didn't used to be ALL candy. Remember apples? But then the urban myth of the razor blade in the apple started and that was the end of apples for trick or treat.
Remember "Trick or Treat for UNICEF"? I haven't see that for several years. (READ MORE)

First off, let me say that in my New Year's Eve post, I said IF I were going to make resolutions, those would be mine! I gave myself an out already!
I could keep this information to myself but I know it will only fester. I would then feel the need to lie about my health plans, etc, etc. In the interests of dieting naked, I will be honest.
I have gained 10 pounds from my lowest weight of 2007, last seen at the end of October. (READ MORE)

Some days I'm fed up with this whole diabetes thing-testing, tracking, meal planning. I know, being pregnant and all, tight control more important than ever, but frankly, I'm just tired of it! So, please pardon my little pity party while I rattle off a few things I hate about being a pregnant diabetic.
Constantly testing. I know it's important. I've learned not freak out if the numbers aren't where I want, but to simply take the information and make adjustments as needed. It's the act of watching the clock for the two-hour mark, never leaving the house without my meter, notebook and insulin pen, and pricking my damn finger close to 10 times a day, although most of the time, I just use my arm. I know it's not as accurate, but it's less pain and less mess. (READ MORE)

The other night I had a breakdown.

 

I needed to wear a nice shirt for work and none of them fit. I threw most of my clothes in the trash and was very upset about how fat I've become.

 

I have a closet full of clothes that I have outgrown. I have gained all the weight I lost and a lot more!

 

This is the fattest I've ever been.

 

But tonight, I am celebrating what I am calling, "My Fattest Night Ever!"

 

I have decided that tomorrow will be the beginning of the new me. The me that will never ever be this fat again. Someone who makes wiser choices and who tries to find little ways to change so it's not overwhelming.

I'm really trying to stay on top of my exercise routine and I'm proud of myself so far. I'm walking for at least 30 minutes at least three times each week as well as working with handweights for at least 15 minutes at least three to four times each week. I'm pushing myself each time I put on my tennis shoes. I'm not losing weight yet though. And my blood sugars are back up in the 200 range despite an initial round of lows.

 

I know it's just a deadly combination at the moment leading to the higher blood sugars. It's hotter here, which means my insulin needs are up already. I'm struggling with my weight which can mean just five pounds adds more need for insulin. Plus my stress levels are through the roof.
