Some of you may find this strange, but I typically travel with diet soda.

 

I should say that I don't load up the car each morning on my way to work (although I do consume one can on the drive in), but whenever we are going to visit a friend or family member, I bring some soda.

 

What I usually do is stop by the store, pick up several bottles or 12 packs, and take one in with me when I get to the destination. That way, if they all get consumed, I know I have more in the car as backup.  And there are no uncomfortable moments when I am leaving if it's not all consumed - I take the leftovers with me.

 

I have a few friends who always tell me: "George, I know you are coming so I always get diet for you!" 

 

To which I reply: "Great! I will drink yours first and take this home!"

For years I was a smoker. I smoked a pack a day at the very least for 15 years. Addiction is powerful.

 

I finally kicked that habit but realized that nicotine is not the only drug I am addicted to. The other is much easier to get and I am not sure I want to quit it yet.

 

Caffeine.

"I'll have the catfish plate and a small soda please." The corner Mediterranean grocery/restaurant, Vine Ripe Market, always has great food. From gyro and skewered chicken to trout, tilapia, catfish, salmon, shrimp, lamb,all the yummy stuff you can't find at the local burger house.
The bubbly girl at the counter asks, "What kind of drink would you like?" I tell her I will have a diet soda. "Really!?" was the following shocked statement from her lips.
I guess she was expecting the usual call for Pepsi or some other flavored soda. I didn't know what to say. The possibility of explaining about my diabetes flashed into my head, or if I should just play it off as normal. It was a simple interaction, but it weighted on me for several minutes after. Did I react the right way? Should I have explained to her why I chose diet? Was it any of her business? Maybe next time I'll just roll with it and make light of my love for sugar-free drinks. These changes I wrote about recentlyare going pretty well. I'm choosing better foods to eat, only having human sized portions, and even cutting back on the soda.

 

I cannot believe I just typed that.

 

Soda. Diet soda is a vice I am not ready to give up entirely. I love soda in almost any flavor as long as it's diet odds are I'll like it.

 

But I drink a lot of soda. Way too much to be honest. And although diet soda doesn't seem to affect my blood glucose levels, the salt in it is not good.

Kerri recently posted a blog on Six Until Me about her co-worker having "diabetes for the day." It was interesting to hear just a few details about an outsider's perspective on this disease. Even though it was only for a day, at least a small portion of what we go through hit home with him.

I dropped into a local fast food joint for none other then fast food. It is an awful habit but since I always seem to be running around somewhere, fast food is the choice for me.

 

After ordering my food I walked over to the soda fountain to fill up my "biggest size you have" cup.

 

Let me explain that. I once asked for a 'Jumbo" soda and I got a large. I asked, "don't you have a size bigger than large?" And the worker said, "Yeah it's a 'Super Quencher'" I replied, "well yeah I wanted a "Jumbo" size which means the biggest size you have!" He said, "You have to say 'Super Quencher.'" I told him that I feel stupid saying that so I just took the large and left. Now back to the story.

We try really hard to stay away from high fructose corn syrup around here, although, man, that stuff is in everything! Even bread. I think there are two or three brands that don't have it.

 

Olivia used to drink a lot of diet soda. I'd buy a couple of 2 litre bottles every week for her, in addition to drink mixes like Crystal Light. Sometimes I'd make diet Kool-Aid, using Splenda instead of sugar. One week, I added up how much of my grocery money was going towards diet drinks and was apalled - it was easily $10 or $15 a week.

There really just is no way to describe the way an extreme low feels. It was surreal, like I was outside of myself; like I was watching myself through a camera mounted on my head--that carnival ride-like feeling you get when you watch a video of someone, say, walking through the woods from their point of view; like part of me was asleep while the conscious part of me fought like mad to make things right.
I saw the 29 and while I almost immediately pulled the strip out of the meter, for just a second I thought the number was the code for the strips. I, obviously, wasn't thinking clearly.

Are you hooked on caffeine drinks? They are everywhere! Caffeine is littered throughout cups of coffee, doubled up in cans of energy drinks, and even spilling from D-friendly diet sodas, making it hard to get away from. Maybe this is why so many adults, and teenagers, consume the stuff at a heart-pounding rate. But have you noticed the impact on your blood glucose numbers like I have? It can spike my numbers wicked fast if I am not on top of things. Sure doesn't make my employment at Starbucks any easier, the stuff is diffused into my veins with every breath I take!

So, here it is almost a full week into September and I haven't set any goals for myself yet. Haven't put a pretty, lined sticky note on my computer monitor to remind me what I'm working toward for the next four weeks. Maybe it's because I started ignoring my August goals so early in the game.
It wasn't long before I was looking at that blue sticky and thinking to myself that I should just take the darn thing down already. I mean, the only thing I was really sticking to-save a bad cold-was walking at least five times a week.
While I didn't meet my goals of testing after every meal and limiting myself to just one soda per day, I will say that having those goals staring at me did some good. I tested more often, although not often enough; and I did limit my soda intake, although not one per day; and I did dramatically increase my water intake. So there was quite a bit of good that came from setting those goals. (READ MORE)
