Dear Diabetes Supply Bag,
It is with regret that I write to inform you that your services are no longer needed. Though your time with me was short, you have provided me with dependability, style and functionality that I will forever appreciate.
I remember when I found you. My family and I were leaving on our first airplane trip. For the sake of airline carryone rules, I needed something I could pile all my diabetes supplies and regular purse supplies in. I searched the purses and handbags area at my supercenter rather quickly. Some bags were too big, some were too small. Some were just plain ugly. Not only did I need something for that trip, but I needed the bag to be functional after the trip, as well. (READ MORE)

I'll admit it. I'm a big fan of cheap wine. Yummy. Give me some Boones Farm Strawberry Zinfandel on a hot summer night, and I'll get my buzz on - and get it on good. And I used to, back in the day, enjoy a nice cigarette (or ten) with my wine. Even now, every so often, I'll get a craving for a cigarette. Thankfully, the urge is usually cured by the smell of a heavy smoker passing by and occasionally cured by a simple, single drag on another person's gross-stick. (READ MORE)

There's a lot about diabetes that isn't so happy. Really, 98% isn't. But to me, there are things about this disease that top the list of the worst parts of diabetes. The biggest thing is the utterly hopeless need for insulin.
I can't hide the facts from myself like I can when I think about complications or discrimination. I can tell myself that better control will lower my risk of complications, that they might not happen to me. I can believe that employers, lovers, and friends won't judge me on my diabetes. Those are things that always leave glimmers of hope in my heart; they aren't finite.

So there's been a lot of talk around Blogbetes lately about logging. Why we do it, how we do it, what tools we use to do it. I have a confession to make: I haven't logged in a very long time. Frankly, I'm afraid to. (READ MORE)

The day before Charlie was to begin playing ice hockey for the first time, we went to the rink to break in his new skates and get a little practice in.
As it is with just about everything we do, decisions need to be made regarding Charlie's diabetes. Do we adjust basals? Maybe. Does he skate with pump on or pump off? What do we do with his testing supplies? I didn't want to hold the bag while skating the whole time yet I couldn't leave it behind in a locker. I ended up stuffing my coat pockets with alcohol wipes, peanut butter crackers, a juice box, test strips, a pricker and the meter. With a camera, cell phone and keys also in my pockets, it's a wonder I was able to move at all.

It may be strange or alarming, but I've often imagined being kidnapped. I watch a lot of TV crime dramas, so the thoughts tend to race through my head. I imagine my reaction as a human, as a woman, and as a diabetic.
As a human, I know that I'm not giving up without a fight. My life is precious and valuable, whether someone else sees that or not. I would try every plan to escape or leave every clue to allow the police to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.
As a woman, the same truths apply. I'm not giving up without a fight. I refuse to give in to whatever threats unless I've tried my hardest to get away or delay the action.

I believe that every single person makes mistakes. And I believe that every single person has at least one thing in their life that they feel they simply, absolutely CANNOT afford to make a mistake around.Â
Sometimes, it's related to caring for a child. Sometimes, it's related to caring for someone else. Sometimes, it's related to work. Sometimes, to finances.  Always, there are things that people are particularly protective about and things they just beat themselves up over when they (often inevitably) make a mistake related to them.Â
For me, there is nothing I'm more self-critical about, more afraid of screwing up, than my diabetes. I guess it's pretty obvious why. Diabetes mistakes, when repeated too often, have some severe consequences. Diabetes mistakes can be dangerous. Not to be melodramatic, but in truth, diabetes mistakes can be fatal.Â
