I spent the last five days in Charleston, South Carolina with my mom, grandmother, and cousin celebrating birthdays, life, and good news. We had an amazing trip filled with lots of seafood, sight-seeing, and girl talk. I haven't been able to spend that much time with my mom or my family in awhile and it was much needed.

 

But travel these days isn't all it's cracked up to be. We've always been a family that traveled so I remember days when you could carry on gallons of shampoo and nobody cared. I remember when you walked through a metal detector and people barely noticed you. Post 9/11 has changed travel though. And recent years have brought about even higher security in airports.

I would like to support you and your family in this campaign to find a cure for children's diabetes, most specifically for your Charlie. Your daily routine with Charlie is overwhelming to read and enough to bring a tear to ones eye as I'm sure you have shed many. I realize now how much I take for granted every day and realize, although troubling, the temper tantrums from Ricky because we won't give him anymore apple juice is nothing to get upset about. Diabetes has always entailed a lot of paraphernalia. Back in the day, meters were three times the size they are now. Bottles of strips weighed a ton. And syringes came with much longer needles. Plus there were juice boxes, snack packs, and rolls of candy. But even now, with all the advances in this modern day and age, diabetes comes with baggage (and I'm not talking the emotional kind).

I'll admit it. I'm a big fan of cheap wine. Yummy. Give me some Boones Farm Strawberry Zinfandel on a hot summer night, and I'll get my buzz on - and get it on good. And I used to, back in the day, enjoy a nice cigarette (or ten) with my wine. Even now, every so often, I'll get a craving for a cigarette. Thankfully, the urge is usually cured by the smell of a heavy smoker passing by and occasionally cured by a simple, single drag on another person's gross-stick. (READ MORE)

This weekend was a busy one. Typically we are busy folk. It seems there is always an event, party, meeting, or whatnot to attend. This weekend was no different.
I had a happy and successful start to Saturday with a loss on the old Weight Watchers scale. The weather was perfect which was both bitter and sweet since most of the country is having horrible weather. But living in Southern California has its definite pluses and minuses. The next stop was a friends Baby Shower in which all the guys were going to hang out at the house with the dad-to-be as the gals had the shower somewhere else. (READ MORE)

Dear Diabetes Supply Bag,
It is with regret that I write to inform you that your services are no longer needed. Though your time with me was short, you have provided me with dependability, style and functionality that I will forever appreciate.
I remember when I found you. My family and I were leaving on our first airplane trip. For the sake of airline carryone rules, I needed something I could pile all my diabetes supplies and regular purse supplies in. I searched the purses and handbags area at my supercenter rather quickly. Some bags were too big, some were too small. Some were just plain ugly. The diabetes bag is relatively light but it weighs heavy upon us. We panic when we lose sight of it like it's one of our children lost in a food store. It is soft and black with pictures of rockets on it. It contains about 13 alcohol wipes, a meter with a blurry screen, two vials of test strips, a white pricker with a tiny burgundy blood stain on the tip, about a dozen light-blue lancets, a tube of cake gel, Glucagon, two 15-carb apple juice boxes, a granola bar, a bag of Goldfish crackers and a pair of my black underwear???

Everyone needs to take a personal day every now and then. At least that's how I feel. Lately, It seems like I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I have been putting in some long days of landscaping work, I just returned from a weekend trip to Omaha, and my girlfriend is in the process of getting a job back in her home state. Tired. Left side of my back hurts when I cough. Throat feels glunky. Head feels whirly and fluzzered. Finding comfort in dark chocolate. Don't feel like writing.

 

No real desire to run to the computer and blog about a conversation I had with my co-worker about how Charlie doesn't need to eat sugar-free foods like her type 2 father.

 

Not in the educating mood.

 

No strength for sarcasm. 

 

No desire to give an explanation to the lady working the Christmas tree farm when she says "I like your bag" as if its filled with Lego pieces or mascara. 

 

Thanks! Merry Christmas! I carry this bag around so that I can take blood from my son twelve times a day. Wanna watch? And for your information, it's got pictures of rocket ships. Lots of 'em. Manly rocket ships that terrorize the galaxy!
