It was a diabetes on TV sort of weekend. Did you guys see that one of the contestants on The Amazing Race has type 1 diabetes? She and her teammate are doctors from Arizona. She was shown testing her blood sugar in the car while in the thick of the race. She was 332, I think. I would think the adrenalin of a race around the world would wreak havoc on her blood sugars. Should be interesting to see how she adjusts to that and how much of the diabetes-related footage the producers decide to show.

Some years ago, I joined an online "healthy eating forum", expecting support in eating healthy (fresh, whole, medically-appropriate) foods in reasonable amounts -- the same sort of community support one expects from a community in which people are looking to lose or maintain weight. What I found instead was a community of young women in various stages of recovery from eating disorders or disordered eating, or progressing from one type of disordered eating to another.

Sadly, I've been watching a lot of TV lately. The whole no school and no job thing leaves me with a lot of free time. This morning I was watching the Today show. A segment on infertility came on as soon as I switched the TV on.

As a woman with type 1 diabetes, PCOS, and endometriosis, infertility has become a definite part of my vocabulary. No doctor has told me that I am infertile and I'm in no place to need to know. Infertility is just something that's been listed on my possible "side effects" and "symptoms" list and something that I've tossed over in my mind.

A recent DirecTV ad sent a number of d-tweeters to our keyboards, talking about the newest TV "superhero". The illuminated blue ring that would have been the dial on a rotary phone looks similar to the World Diabetes Day logo, suggesting that the cops in trouble might be calling for the help of  "Diabetes Man". All things considered, the light-up blue ring on the telephone dial would have been cool had it connected to a diabetes crisis center ("I'm out of insulin and I can't get to my doc until a week from Friday!" "I'm reading 400 and I've injected almost a whole vial of insulin, but it still isn't going down!" "Diabetes sucks! (READ MORE)

If I could control my blood sugar with my mind, I'd constantly be 85 or 100. Exactly. Not between, not a variable. Just 85 or 100. Why?

Because they are nice numbers. They aren't my favorites (my favorites are 7 and 14 which is quite odd considering what I'm about to explain). They are just good blood sugar numbers.

Because they end in 5 and 0.

Okay, maybe I'm a little OCD when it comes to numbers. For instance, the TV volume is always set on a 5 or a 0 in my house. If it HAS to be something else, then it needs to be an even number. Like 22. That's a nice number.

I don't think I do anything multiple times that involve fives or zeros. I don't wash my hands 5 times or count back to zero when I complete a sentence. My numerical OCD doesn't really infiltrate the non-diabetes part of me.

There comes a point where death isn't scary anymore. But hope...hope is scary.

I'm a fan of Grey's Anatomy on ABC. The latest episode featured a terminal cancer patient...a young and seemingly vibrant woman (minus the disease ravaging her body)...who was seeking physician assisted suicide. Those lines up there were ones she said in defense of her own death.

As they passed through the TV speakers, they hit me. Hard. I know they're just fiction, that some TV writer/producer thought them up. Someone thought they knew what it felt like to face that precipice. Maybe they actually do. Maybe they're writing from experience the way that I am now.

Those words hit me hard because it's a way that I've never verbalized about emotions that I constantly feel. I've never really considered death and hope in that way. The fear. In a reverse kind of way.

I went to the movies with a girl friend last night. We've only met one other time and I didn't feel that instant "best friend" vibe but Marvin was busy and I was dressed cute. So I decided to venture outside my shy self. We ended up seeing Next Three Days at Studio Movie Grill. Dinner and a movie all in one. Expensive, but good.

Next Three Days hasn't really been advertised here but the few times I'd seen it come up I thought it looked good. It seemed like my type of movie. I had no idea if it'd be hers, but her pick was sold out. We ordered dinner. I had a glass of wine. The movie started.

**Notice: some spoilers here...a big part of the movie will be given away if you continue to read. Just for those of you planning to see it (which I do recommend!)!**

It's been an entire week since I moved. I can't even believe that this past week has gone by so quickly. I suppose that's what the unpacking, organizing, and shopping does. It's been such a busy week that I'm not even sure exactly how I feel about it all.

I've gotten to spend time with Marvin which has been both a nice change and a help to getting settled. He and his family have made this transition much easier. I'm looking forward to getting back into a dating routine that I so strongly missed over the summer. Friday night dinner and movie dates are way too vital for me.

1.       So, did you hear about the Phoenix Haboob? (Or as The Mr. likes to say: HA! Boob!) It blew right over us. The atmosphere outside quickly went from fairly light to pitch black. In fact, the reason I even looked outside was because it got so dark I thought a storm was approaching. I couldn’t see the house across the street from us, and could barely see my backyard fence about 50 feet away. It was almost silly to see all five of us huddled by the back sliding glass door watching the wind whip the palm trees around. We watched national TV coverage of the storm, which gave us a great perspective of what we were in the middle of. Took me back to watching the thunderstorms and TV weather coverage back home.
