I love music.

Ever since I was a little kid I could sing and dance to every song on the Earth, Wind, and Fire greatest hits record. I would dance whenever Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was played even if it was a jukebox in a crowded restaurant. And no matter the time of night, when Barney Miller’s theme song started my mother said I would come running from my room in my PJ’s to dance to the song in front of the TV.

I love playing it, listening to it, and even writing it sometimes. When I was a kid I played the trumpet. In Junior High learned percussion which I played throughout high school and in my 20’s I learned to play guitar. Lots of music always playing around my home and car. I love it.

One of the most frustrating aspects of diabetes management is the fact that diabetes has a mind of its own. At any given moment, your body can do the strangest things that you have no control over. Stress, hormones or the weather can have a huge impact on blood sugars and insulin levels. And it's the worst when it's completely unexpected.
Every so often I have weeks where I run higher than normal. I've never found a correlation to one specific trigger, but usually I notice it's when multiple triggers seem to go off at the same time. Whether it be a combination of increased stress and decreased sleep or change in hormones and a change in exercise or maybe even all four, I run high for a few days. (READ MORE)

I got to the office at 8:00 AM. My appointment was for 8:30 so I figured I would read some magazines in the waiting room for a while before I met with my new endocrinologist.

After walking down a very long, narrow, and deserted hallway I found the room number. I took a deep breath and grabbed the door knob. It was locked.

Down the hallway and down the elevator I went and found a bench to park on for a while. As time ticked away I started thinking about what my doctor should look like or act like. I took out my Blackberry to check my email and to post some Tweets

8:20 rolled around and I headed back upstairs to the long, narrow, deserted hallway that I am sure I have seen in a movie. The door was still locked. I leaned up against the wall and waited.

The following are actual headlines published recently:

HOLLAND ON VERGE OF DIABETES EXPLOSION – Dutch News

"Synthia Van Vechten reporting live from Amsterdam where the region is bracing for a massive diabetes explosion. Businesses and residences have taken precaution, boarding up windows and relocating to more secure locations in the north. Others such as Joop Nederhorst, who I spoke to earlier, have ignored national warnings to evacuate, brazenly saying that he is not afraid of people with diabetes. That's right, you heard me correctly – 'not afraid of people with diabetes.' Just when I thought I've heard everything … Back to you in the studio Tabitha."

According to the Florence Morning News, an elementary school student in South Carolina allegedly attacked several classmates with a diabetes blood sugar testing needle. It is not known from the story whether or not the child doing the pricking was the one with diabetes, but I suspect it was. A school official confirmed that the attacker was disciplined for his actions but would not provide specifics. It is also not known if the attacker was working alone or if he was part of a larger cell.

Not all diabetics are prone to such senseless violence. But some may claim otherwise.

Some may say that diabetics are all one in the same.

Some may say that diabetics are no longer welcome here.

They will march in protest and wave inflammatory signs.

They will scream with bulging veins.

Last week, in the midst of the chaos that I wrote about in my last post, I was able to spend a bit of time reflecting on the blessings that have come to my life since my diagnosis with type 2 diabetes in December 2008.

I dubbed the week as Diabetes Blessings Week, and invited other diabetes bloggers to write about their D blessings as well. In the end, I must say that I am overwhelmed by level of support and participation the event received.

Here are some of the blessings that I wrote about last week:

A New Beginning – If it weren’t for diabetes, and the yeast infection I developed because of it, I wouldn’t have found out that I had congestive heart failure before it was too late. I was blessed with a second chance at life because of diabetes.

In ancient times, the body was said to be controlled by four humours, related to the body fluids blood (sanguine/red), phlegm (phlegmatic), yellow bile (choleric), and black bile (melancholy). In addition to predisposition to certain diseases, an excess of one or another humor was associated with a particular appearance, personality, and/or personality disorder. While the theory is long discredited, the descriptions carry through to today: a sanguine personality is friendly and outgoing; a phlegmatic one, slow-moving or lazy; a choleric one, quick to anger; and a melancholic one, prone to sadness, discontent, or depression. (Interestingly, I haven't been able to find a relationship between diabetes — either major type — and an imbalance of one or more humours.)
