As a parent of a child with diabetes, it’s not so easy to set goals. Test his blood sugar more often? Don’t think so. His little fingers look like they’ve been dipped in bee hives. Doctors have been urging us to cut down on testing for years.
Get more exercise? Charlie never stops running. He’s like a greyhound on amphetamine.

If nothing else, diabetes has provided me with stories to tell.
Like the time before diagnosis when I peed my pants. Or the time I told a classmate if they weren't careful, I'd put insulin in their milk and make them diabetic. Or the time I socked a kid who called a diabetic friend of mine "sugar-freak." Or the times I've made a donkey of myself during a low.

It's my time...to prioritize in my own way.
You may have noticed that diabetes hasn't been my first priority here lately. Not only is school speeding by faster than I can possibly keep up, my other health conditions are facing a lot of changes. Changes that I'm so ready for, but also not prepared for at the moment.
First, I'm starting birth control today after going off the progesterone almost two months ago. I'm hoping that the birth control will help with the premenstrual symptoms that I experience (like cramping, joint pain, headaches, and fatigue), without leaving lasting side effects (like weight gain, stroke, or pulmonary embolism). It took a lot to make the decision to go on it again, but I've made the decision and now I'm excited to see the results.

Often the best way to figure out if something is going to work is just to do it. I'm a firm believer in learning from mistakes and working out kinks while actually doing what you said you were going to do.
That said, I've realized fairly quickly that I need to revise my list of goals for this month. Only slightly, but particularly my goal to only drink one soda or less per day. While it has been pretty easy to cut out my mindless first-thing-to-the-office soda and replace it with a ginormous cup of water, there are other times of the day when I really crave a soda. And, actually, there are times when a fountain soda can pretty quickly curb my desire for something sweet from the vending machine. (READ MORE)

As an engineer by training, I find quantitative analysis -- numbers -- an expression of control. Self control, exercise, body function, health and illness... So while I'm fortunate enough not to have to be "Bionic Betty" with a peripheral pancreas, I still refer regularly to six separate instruments, plus additional Web-based resources, to manage my food intake, exercise output, and biometric information.
Weight. Some folk say weighing once a week is enough, but I find that if I don't weigh in every morning, my weight can go off on very health-unfriendly curves. I log my weight both in The Daily Plate and in my personal Excel workbook.

As a magazine editor, I am deadline driven. The closer I get to one, the harder I work. I think I've always been this way. In college I tended to leave big projects, studying for tests and semester-grade-defining papers until almost the last minute. I've joked for some time that the reason I haven't written The Great American Novel yet is because no one has given me a deadline for it. Last week I set the bar high for myself. Too high. Out of a possible 25 points, I earned a total of 16. I can make all the excuses in the world for why I was not successful, but the truth of the matter is, I just wasn't as focused as I was the previous week.
But it's a new day, a new week and so far, I'm doing OK. I revamped my goals for the week, backtracking a bit closer to my original plan. This week, I'm focusing on:
1. Testing my blood sugar four times a day. Last week, I knocked this off the list entirely thinking I had it under control again, but then I slacked, so its back at the top of the list. (READ MORE)

When I look back at 2007, I realize that a lot happened and that I learned a great deal about many things. First and foremost, I am happy to say that it is another year completed and another successful year behind me in the books. To say that and to think about that feels great. Every day that goes by a person living with diabetes learns something new about their disease. I can look back and recall different situations where my blood sugar got low. I remember certain times when I checked my glucose and it was off the charts high. Everything that has happened this year will be a learning experience that I can come back to in the future. I learned about myself and how different things affect me. I can recall specific weeks where everything was hunky dory and others where I felt I was going to lose it. Just living and learning each day adds more notches to my diabetic belt, a belt that I will always have. (READ MORE)

My inaugural season coaching Charlie's soccer team - The R2s - came to an end. The soccer part went well. We scored "THIS many" goals. (Holding up sticky orange fingers) The other teams scored "THIS many goals." (Holding up slightly less sticky orange fingers.)
I know soccer. That part comes easy. But managing diabetes when there's 117 various obstacles working against me? Not so much. I often found myself winging it; rolling the dice; holding my breath; crossing my fingers; thanking my lucky stars; speaking in clichés.
I did a lot of research on pumping strategies for excessive activity. The more I read, the more confusing it got.
Reduce basal rates by 50 percent 1 to 2 hours prior to activity. OK, I can do that.
However, watch out for high blood sugars just prior to activity due to adrenaline.
If using insulin to treat high blood sugar, use caution as activity speeds up the effect of insulin. (READ MORE)

Congratulations to Halle Berry on the birth of her healthy baby girl on Sunday! The height and weight were not divulged, so let's all hope the baby doesn't suffer from macrosomia, a common complication for women with diabetes. Regardless of Halle's ignorance about her diabetes, the healthy arrival of a baby is ALWAYS news to celebrate!
A conference this week in Washington is focusing on the subtypes of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. At least 16 different genes can impact type 2 cases, and 14 genes can be involved in type 1. One of the goals of the conference is to increase awareness of the many possible forms of the disease beyond type 1 and type 2. (READ MORE)
