ADM logoIf nothing else, diabetes has provided me with stories to tell.

 

Like the time before diagnosis when I peed my pants.  Or the time I told a classmate if they weren't careful, I'd put insulin in their milk and make them diabetic.  Or the time I socked a kid who called a diabetic friend of mine "sugar-freak."  Or the times I've made a donkey of myself during a low.

ADM logoIt's my time...to prioritize in my own way.

You may have noticed that diabetes hasn't been my first priority here lately. Not only is school speeding by faster than I can possibly keep up, my other health conditions are facing a lot of changes. Changes that I'm so ready for, but also not prepared for at the moment.

 

First, I'm starting birth control today after going off the progesterone almost two months ago. I'm hoping that the birth control will help with the premenstrual symptoms that I experience (like cramping, joint pain, headaches, and fatigue), without leaving lasting side effects (like weight gain, stroke, or pulmonary embolism). It took a lot to make the decision to go on it again, but I've made the decision and now I'm excited to see the results.

Right now, there are a thousand things on my "to do" list. Everything from making Christmas returns to getting my life back on a routine. Just making the list settled some of my frustration with how my life is going at this stage. It's a new year and I'm ready to get back on track and get this life under control. I don't make resolutions so much as set goals because I tend to constantly be doing small pieces of whatever my resolution might be. My problem is relaxing my control or my routine and ending up with a bigger mess.

I've always been "advanced" for my age. I skipped a grade in middle school. I never found interest in keeping up with the crowds in high school. In college, I never got into the party scene. I was always focused on my work and the next steps.

 

This portion of my personality that looks ahead, plans for the future, and doesn't always live in the "now" has saved me a lot of trouble over the years. For instance, when I couldn't find a job after college, the planner in me had saved enough money to live on and not stress about where my next meal would come from. But there have also been moments where the planner has caused me grief.

Testing is a difficult thing for me. I don't really know why because I've been doing it almost all my life and it doesn't really bother me to do it. I just can't seem to make it a habit to check more than a few times per day. I keep getting distracted or busy when I should be checking.

 

I know all the tips and tricks to make blood sugar checks happen. Check in the morning, check before meals, check before bed, check when feeling off. Sure, I know all about it. But putting it into practice has been a completely different thing for me lately. And I didn't always struggle with this.

I am still struggling with the Symlin. At 30 mcg for a week and a half, I'm experiencing nausea after almost every use. It doesn't last more than an hour, but it's still a major inconvenience that I expected to be gone by now. And because I can't raise it from 30 mcg, I am seeing more harm than good in my blood sugars. My averages are now over 215 and my post-meal numbers are sticking in the high 200s.

 

I've promised myself that I will give it at least one full use though so I will stick it out until the Symlin pen is empty. I have started raising my mealtime insulin from 50% to 65% to combat some of the highs and I've noticed slight improvements. I don't expect my next A1c to be at all improved though.

Often the best way to figure out if something is going to work is just to do it. I'm a firm believer in learning from mistakes and working out kinks while actually doing what you said you were going to do.
That said, I've realized fairly quickly that I need to revise my list of goals for this month. Only slightly, but particularly my goal to only drink one soda or less per day. While it has been pretty easy to cut out my mindless first-thing-to-the-office soda and replace it with a ginormous cup of water, there are other times of the day when I really crave a soda. And, actually, there are times when a fountain soda can pretty quickly curb my desire for something sweet from the vending machine. (READ MORE)

For several months, a bunch of us have taken part in Wednesday night Diabetes Social Media Advocacy (#dsma) chats on Twitter. Run by Cherise Shockley, these sessions are about an hour long and cover a number of predesignated topics ranging from support groups to diabetes-related conferences to relationships to insurance issues. A week ago this past Wednesday, talk centered around the glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test: how important it is (or should be) in determining our treatment, how accurate it is as a measure of our diabetes control, whether or not we consider current best-practice A1c goals to be realistic or not (and why), and what sort of self-treatment we use to achieve (or try to achieve) those goals.

ADM LogoAs an engineer by training, I find quantitative analysis -- numbers -- an expression of control. Self control, exercise, body function, health and illness... So while I'm fortunate enough not to have to be "Bionic Betty" with a peripheral pancreas, I still refer regularly to six separate instruments, plus additional Web-based resources, to manage my food intake, exercise output, and biometric information.

 

Weight. Some folk say weighing once a week is enough, but I find that if I don't weigh in every morning, my weight can go off on very health-unfriendly curves. I log my weight both in The Daily Plate and in my personal Excel workbook.
