Olivia met a girl at Clara Barton last year named Sam. As luck would have it, Sam lived the next town over. The two girls hit it off really well and exchanged phone numbers at the end of the session.
I admit I was eager to foster the friendship because Olivia doesn't have any other friends with diabetes. She knows some D kids, but they're all considerably younger than her and she doesn't have anything, other than diabetes, in common with them. The other kids in school with diabetes are not in her classes and she hasn't made friends with any of them.
Olivia invited Sam to sleep over a couple of times and the girls got along really well. The only fault I could find with Sam was her picky eating habits and considering we're talking twelve year-old, squealy girls here, that's saying something. (READ MORE)

The problem that I have with Lantus is that one dose just doesn't cut it for me. It claims a 24 hour lifespan, but honestly...it's probably more like 20 hours on a good day. Which means that my blood sugars start spiking towards the end of that injection.

 

That's exactly why I split my doses however many years ago. It worked, dropping my A1c like a lead balloon. And now that my schedule nearly forced me into either the insane asylum or a once-per-day dose, I'm struggling to find an appropriate time for my Lantus injection.

 

An evening shot wasn't working because I was having to take such a bulk of insulin that I was dropping way below my safety point by morning. And now I've switched to an early afternoon injection, but I'm afraid that looks like it's bombing as well.

Sometimes I really want my friends to know about my diabetes. Other times, I really hate that they know anything about it at all.
My mom always told me to be open about being diabetic so that my friends would know how to treat lows and what to do in case of emergencies. She's right (why are mothers always right?!?). My friends need to know where my glucagon is in my house. They need to know the symptoms of low blood sugars. My friends need to be prepared for the emergency situations that come about when you're diabetic. (READ MORE)

The day that I moved out of my mom's house, my mom cried the entire way home from my new apartment. Not only was she losing her daily companion, but she was scared. All moms get scared when their kids move out, of course. But moms of diabetics have a completely different perspective.

 

She had seen me have two seizures before. She'd been there when I blacked out in the grocery store when moments earlier I was feeling fine. She'd driven me to the emergency room when I was sick, in fear of DKA. She'd watched me grow up with this disease, in the highs and lows, quite literally.

Traveling can be an awesome thing. I find that when I do travel, I pay the utmost attention to controlling my diabetes. I'm away from home, I don't want anything to happen. For me, the simple fact that I'm in an unfamiliar place without any "diabetic connections", is reason enough to watch my control closely. When traveling I start thinking about what I would do or where I might end up if I got really low. Personally, I guess that is one of the main reasons while I try and take special care of myself and my sugars while away on vacation or business.

This is the realization I came to this week as I was traveling on JDRF business.

Anyone who knows me knows that I don't like to waste money. Well, who does? Then it may come as a surprise to hear that I've essentially just asked my endo if it's OK for me to throw $25 down the tubes.
You see, for about the last six weeks or so I've been battling some terrible, terrible seasonal allergies that are completely wrecking my blood sugar. I haven't been able to exercise in more than two weeks because my numbers were so unpredictable that I was getting very frustrated with still getting high numbers after my daily walk when normally my walk offers a drop in blood sugar or a stabilization of it. As people with diabetes, we are told time and again to make sure we schedule regular oral care visits, as diabetes makes us both more susceptible to oral disease (cavities, periodontal issues, etc.) and makes it more difficult for us to recover from the procedures needed to treat that disease. "Why," you may then ask, "have you never sought out dental care as an adult, even when preventative care was made available to you, free of charge?" My answer to that can be summed up in a single word.

My husband just switched jobs, which is always a headache when it comes to health insurance. If you are lucky enough to be allowed to start right away, with no waiting period, there's still that period of limbo when the old insurance has been cancelled (and man, they don't waste any time doing that) and when your new insurance is in the system.

 

Of course, Olivia needed insulin while we were in limbo. I went to CVS to pick it up and it was going to cost $335.99 for three bottles of insulin. Needless to say, we can't afford that.

Thursday night, I decided to stay up a little too late (or early, we shall say). My mother always warned me when I was younger to monitor my blood sugars closely when I threw my sleep cycle off. I never figured out why, because I always seemed to be fine. What does me being a night owl have to do with blood sugars?

 

But Thursday night was an extreme. I didn't get to bed until just before the sun was rising. I made sure to sleep in as long as possible (and managed 6 hours of sleep) just to make it through the day ahead of me.

I may be a little full of myself, but last week I looked up the requirements to become a diabetes educator. Sitting with my coworker earlier this month and comparing war stories about our diabetes and the intermittent calls from my mom or my aunt about the best ways to manage my nearly 91-year-old grandmother's type 2 diabetes really give me a thrill. Maybe that sounds kind of kookie, but I suppose I have simple pleasures.
So, anyway, I'm not becoming a diabetes educator, mainly because I'd need to become a registered nurse (I think) and, frankly, that's not something I want to do. I was a little disappointed, though, reading the list of requirements and realizing that this was something that was out of reach for me. (READ MORE)
