Every year, I thoroughly enjoy the month of November. It's absolutely my favorite month of the year. The weather is generally perfect as the leaves begin to change here in Texas, the mornings get frosty, and the afternoon highs are ideal. My birthday happens this month. Thanksgiving, football, and general fall fun. Plus, November is when the diabetes community gets wild and joins together to do things like the Big Blue Test, World Diabetes Day, and now T1 Day.
This year, I'm not sure how I feel about Diabetes Awareness Month though. I'm excited for my birthday and the weather and all the other happenings. But diabetes has been extremely difficult for me lately. In an emotional, awareness kind of way. As well as the numbers kind of way.

Today marked both the beginning of November and the beginning of Diabetes Awareness Month. There are a boat load of different activities scheduled throughout the month, and while I would love to participate in each and every one of them, I know it’s just not humanly possible. So, I’ve put together a list of the activities to which I’ll devote some time and effort.
First and foremost is the Going Blue initiative I started over on my blog, My Diabetic Heart. I draped the site in Diabetes Blue and will leave it that way until the end of November. Fellow D-Bloggers were invited to do the same.

When you see the check-mark-y swoosh, you think Nike, right? An apple gets you the computer company, golden arches make you think of cheesburgers, a peacock will have you thinking Must See TV, a red cross... you get the picture.
And when it comes to health there are several very recognizable symbols of support, perhaps the most popular is the pink ribbon for breast cancer. I was doing some research today on breast cancer and realized that the pink ribbon is quite possibly the only symbol synonymous with only one health condition. Even the red ribbon went from AIDS to a host of other causes.
You see a pink ribbon you instantly think breast cancer; you see a red, green or yellow ribbon and you have to do some thinking or asking. While many diabetes organizations and associations have their own symbols, there is not one that is universal for diabetes.

I look down at my finger tips and can only wonder what pricked formations lie ahead.
Four fingers have unique layouts of purplish-red dots. Each mark from it's own blood test in time. I daydream of defining those marks into something more relevant. A symbolic circle for worldwide diabetes awareness for instance. Or rows of hearts to swoon my girlfriend with. For the wanton sand bar look is not working for me.
I feel my silly dream may not come true. Not only because the idea of bleeding designs into fingertips is, well, somewhat odd, but also because my lancing device has the mirrored accuracy of Shaquille O'Neal at the free-throw line. (READ MORE)

At some time during our diabetic self-discovery, we are told that diabetes -- like most chronic illnesses -- is often accompanied by a second "D": depression. Considering the amount of time we need to put into consideration of our diets, exercise, drugs, and doctor visits -- and how much that takes out of what would otherwise be disposable income -- it's hardly surprising. Nor should it come to anyone's surprise that this level of attention to detail often smacks of another mental-health issue: obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD. It is considered "normal" -- even encouraged -- for people with diabetes to arrange our lives around our blood glucose levels, logging every single reading, every single milligram of metformin or subunit of insulin, weighing and logging every single morsel of food or fluid that passes our lips, every step of exercise, every moment of every day of our lives. In my last post, I posed the question of why diabetes has not been as high in the general public's awareness as breast cancer, AIDS, or even the Iranian election earlier this year. I left off quoting Christopher Thomas of Diabetic Rockstar, saying "we can't even decide on a color [to represent diabetes awareness]."

We hear it over and over again: delays in seeking medical treatment are responsible for huge numbers of preventable deaths each year. Sometimes the delays are financial: not having the money to pay the doctor, buy the medication, schedule the procedure. Sometimes they are logistical: unable to get time off work, car isn't working (or a driver isn't available), or there isn't an available doctor or treatment facility space within the necessary timeframe. Then there are the diagnostic delays -- often because life-threatening medical conditions don't show symptoms until they reach emergency status, but sometimes because the condition is difficult for one's healthcare team to diagnose.
In this case, though, the expression is idiomatic, and the cause, meteorological. At least, that's what I'm going with.

National Diabetes Awareness Month is here! Yep, it's November already. My birthday is right around the corner, along with Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving. November is a busy, busy month.
But most importantly, it is Diabetes Awareness Month. Fall Walks are happening every weekend. World Diabetes Day takes place. And people advocate our disease.
On Saturday, I'll be participating in the local JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes with several friends. We raised over $450 for the walk. It's my first walk so I'm very excited to see how it works and meet all the people there.
