I'm mad. I'm so mad I'm numb.

You know when you've been waiting and waiting for something (i.e., a package to arrive) that you stop looking for it because you know it won't be there?

Well, when my DexCom starter kit didn't show up on Saturday (which I kind of knew would happen because I'm sure Saturday deliveries cost extra) I was positive I could expect it today since I was explicitly told I'd have it no later than Monday.

But, since I had been waiting two weeks for it, I had almost forgotten about it. Almost. I had actually been thinking about it most of the day, thinking about forgoeing the house work I have tonight to read the user's manual and watch the clock during the minimum three-hour charge time for the receiver.

After a couple of days worth of Christmas Goodies my insulin pump was ready for a new reservoir. I thought about this on the drive home and somewhere throughout all the evening rituals suchs as checking emails and opening up mail I completely forgot about my pump.
It was right before we were going to sit down for dinner and I realized that I had not refilled. I check my pump that shows -:-- and the time left. Great! I grab my bottle of insulin and all my supplies. Is it just me or does insulin turn into champagne when you are in a hurry? I swear my reservoir looked like I had it filled with soap! There were bubbles everywhere. (READ MORE)

I guess word didn't get to DexCom that I'm the world's most impatient person.

I really tried to wait patiently until my new contraption arrived, but when it got to be almost past the amount of time I was quoted for shipping, I decided to call.

"Hi, J. I know we had a holiday in there, but we're at the tail end of the three to five business days you said it would take to get my DexCom. So I'm wondering if you can track the package for me so I can know more specifically when to expect it. You have all my numbers…talk to you soon."

I've never been a trendy person. In junior high when Bass loafers were all the rage, I didn't get a pair until they were almost out of style. There's a lot of that in my life. (READ MORE)

Well, it is official. The inhaled insulin Exubera is being pulled from the market by Pfizer. An ADA article reports that Pfizer took a $2.8 Billion hit to end its involvement with the sale of the drug. Doctoral and patient support, as well as profits, has been too dismal to warrant any kind of extended sale of what was seen as a breakthrough in diabetes management by many. (READ MORE)

It was one of those moments that, looking back, I knew would be significant. It was one of those sort of odd, out-of-place things that happen, catch our eye and then don't come back into view for a while.
I was at the doctor's office, watching myself in the mirror, tucking my shirt in after going potty for a follow up to two weeks ago when there was blood in my urine. Usually when I go to the bathroom, I clip my pump to my shirt so neither the pump nor the tubing are in the way. Typically, I clip Toohey back to my pants prior to zipping and buttoning so I can get the tubing in the right place (versus coming through my zipper!) and tuck it in so it's not hanging out all over the place. Three weeks now I have been waiting for OmniPods new personal diabetes manager (PDM) to arrive. It was actually a chance phone call to OmniPods customer service number that gave me word about this new product. I was nearing the last days in my previous place of residence and called to change the address on file for my automatic pod shipments. Near the end of this phone call, the service rep mentioned a promotion for a new PDM they were launching. (READ MORE)

Last night as I was driving home I got a text. I usually only get texts from one person, so I was expecting a newborn-baby update, but instead I saw a tracking number.

My DexCom rep had finally gotten my starter kit shipped to me.

First thing this morning, I logged on to FedEx and tracked the package. At 7:15 a.m. it was at the distribution facility; at 8:39 a.m. it was on the delivery truck. If anyone could have seen me they would have thought I was a freak looking out the window at the sound of every potential delivery truck.

Wednesdays I telework and I started working on something that required a musical distraction. Being home alone, I cranked up some 80s music.

I try to change my infusion site every 3 days. Generally, I hit the mark almost perfectly at 72 hours. Lately, I've been running the pump all the way to the last drop of insulin so my infusion sites go a little longer (only about 5 hours). I've just gotten lazy in changing them out.

Even before I started doing that, my pump supplies started piling up. I would get shipments for 3 months before I was anywhere near being out. I have a 3-month supply just sitting in my closet while I still use the current supply I have (about 1 month). My next shipment will probably be here within the month.

I wonder if there is a better way. I have been using the same pharmacy for two years now and they have done a perfectly good job for me. But the rigmarole involved seems a bit much, even with all the modern conveniences involved. Every month before my Novolog and test strip stronghold runs out I go to the Longs Pharmacy website and plunk in my prescription numbers, store pick-up number, name, e-mail, phone number, and check a couple of boxes to get my online refill request sent off. Then a day or two later when I am sure they are ready for pick-up, I drive over to the pharmacy being actively aware of when they close because I inevitably need the Novolog by now, do the in-line wait, and fork over some money.
