I stopped over at Six Until Me and found all the windows boarded up and the rooms were littered with squatters. Tumbleweeds bounced across the yard. "Kerri who?" they said when I asked of her whereabouts.
Things sure have changed since Halle Berry cured diabetes five years ago. The online diabetes community has become a ghost town of inactive blogs and non-updated web sites. Though it's absolutely amazing to have a cure, the blogosphere frankly doesn't know what do with itself. Some have just vanished, never to be seen again. Some are still out there, staring vacuously at Google search screens, not knowing where to go, like long-time prisoners released back into society. It's that time of year again...fundraising! So I've written my letter. And here it is, for the world to see!

Dear______,

 

 On March 3rd, 1993, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was 4 years old. It’s been over sixteen years since that day. I’ve struggled, grown, and I’ve gained and lost precious moments from this disease.

 

 In October of 2007, my dad was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as well. To this day, hearing that he had this dreadful disease like me has been one of the worst days of my life. Now, it isn’t just about my own diabetes, my risk of complications, or my lows and highs with this disease. It’s about my dad’s A1c, the genetic risks of diabetes, and the worry that comes with having a diabetic loved one.

There have been a couple of recent threads on LinkedIn regarding the definition of a "cure" for diabetes.

 

As everyone here who takes insulin will agree, diabetes cannot be "cured" by diet alone. And as everyone whose diabetes is currently controlled in part, or entirely, by diet and exercise will agree, just like "insulin is not a cure", "eating the right foods" is not a cure, either.

 

Merriam-Webster defines "cure (noun)" in our sense as the following:

When I think about a cure I get excited. There are so many people out in the world that struggle with this disease day in and day out and for them to be free from all that would be amazing.

I imagine all the candy shops would have to order more stock because I know I would be eating candy and cakes and drinking lots and lots of orange juice.

A cure would change my life, but for the better? I am not sure. Would I eat food that is bad for me? Probably. I have to be honest, I am sure I would put on a lot of weight at first. But I know at least the likelihood of going blind or losing a limb would be gone. So in that way it would be better.

Most of the teams who participate in our local JDRF Walk for a Cure are composed of friends and family walking for a child with diabetes. The child gets to be the focus of attention for a fun-filled day of raising awareness for that which normally separates him (or her) from his friends. There's also the smattering of company, corporate, and fraternal teams walking in the name of public service.

 

And then there's the third type of team: those who walk to honor the memory of a loved one killed by diabetes.

 

Memorial teams may be the fewest in number, but they serve as a poignant reminder of why we must walk - why we must continue to walk - and why insulin is not a cure.

Not long after I wrote this post about a news story that called bariatric surgery a "cure" for type 2 diabetes, a friend of mine emailed to ask about one of the comments. A reader suggested that there will never be a cure for diabetes because the disease is a money maker.
I explained to my friend that the multi-billion-dollar industry makes a profit in so many areas: test strips, meters, oral drugs, insulin, pumps, syringes, even accessories. What motivation is there, I asked her, for the world to come up with a cure and put all those good people out of work.
I may be naive and woefully open minded, but I am not a pessimist; I believe there are good doctors and researchers out there who are not motivated by money. (READ MORE)

When it comes to finding a cure, I'm not exactly picky. I'm ready and willing for whatever we can successfully bring about to get rid of this disease. Last year, I even looked into a clinical trial for islet cell transplant therapy. I give my money to research for this disease so one day my future won't include finger sticks and insulin injections.

 

JDRF announced last year and reiterated this year that the focus is shifting from solely looking for a cure for type 1 diabetes to general treatment and complication therapy. That was a tough pill to swallow. And sometimes still is, even though I currently work at JDRF. I want a cure, not a newer nicer meter or a pump that does it all. I want this gone for good.

The title reads "Cancer drugs halt type 1 diabetes in mice." My first response is: oh my gosh! How can this be??!??!! Then I read further. I can feel the emotions starting to get the best of me.

 

Do I break out in song? Do I start dancing around the room? Do I cry? What if this is it? What if this breakthrough is the one that we all have been striving for?

 

The article explains that research has shown two cancer drugs, Gleevec and Sutent, to halt type 1 diabetes occurrence in mice. It also says that up to 80 percent of the mice with type 1 diabetes went into remission from the drug. Eighty percent!

Once you get past the congestion of sheer numbers and the mix of colors, designs, and graphic techniques, there's one thing that stands out on every team shirt at the Seaside Heights, NJ JDRF Walk: cure. It's not just because the event is called the Walk to Cure Diabetes (emphasis mine), or because insulin is "not a cure" for autoimmune diabetes. It's not because parents are struggling to pay for their children's pumps and CGMs, or because adversity breeds strength.

 

 

The reason we see the word cure is same reason we see another word on team names and slogans, and that word is hope.
