Often the best way to figure out if something is going to work is just to do it. I'm a firm believer in learning from mistakes and working out kinks while actually doing what you said you were going to do.
That said, I've realized fairly quickly that I need to revise my list of goals for this month. Only slightly, but particularly my goal to only drink one soda or less per day. While it has been pretty easy to cut out my mindless first-thing-to-the-office soda and replace it with a ginormous cup of water, there are other times of the day when I really crave a soda. And, actually, there are times when a fountain soda can pretty quickly curb my desire for something sweet from the vending machine. (READ MORE)

I nearly ran over myself coming downstairs after putting the kids to bed last night. It was shortly after 8 p.m. and I had had a chocolate craving all day. Actually, I had been craving carbs all day. Chewy and sweet was what I was after. And, I wanted brownies. Fudge brownies. When I have a craving, it's bad. I haven't had one this bad in a long time.
"Mmmm, don't you want some ice cream?" I prodded my husband.
"No, I'm not an ice cream-aholic like you are," he said. I was disappointed. I thought I could have convinced him to join me in some indulgence.
I didn't need it anyway, I thought to myself, so it's just as well that he didn't want that hot fudge sundae I had been talking about earlier. But, man, this desire to eat was absolutely intense. So I sat down on the couch with a box of Fruit Loops.
"I thought that medicine made you not hungry," my husband said, joining me on the couch. (READ MORE)

The open bag of chocolate-covered raisins stared at me from beside my keyboard. I had a craving that morning for something chocolate and popable, like M&Ms or junior mints. It was a strange craving because most of me didn't want to give in, but the part that drove me to the drug store and walked me to the candy aisle obviously won out.
I gave those raisins the evil eye before I twisted the top of the bag and threw them into my top desk drawer. I should have thrown them away, but I knew I'd want some later. Strange, yes, my thought process.
It was around lunch time when I sat on the couch, unable to move from the nastiness I was feeling in my stomach. Four times in two hours I had been to the bathroom. Getting back to work wasn't any easier as I was barely able to concentrate. (READ MORE)

I got so frustrated with my A1c number and my recent averages that I started logging in detail again. I'd planned to start after finals (around December 14), but I just couldn't take another week or two of 200 level blood sugars. So I brought out my UltraSmart meter which logs carbs, insulin levels, and my blood sugars.

 

So for the past few days, I've been logging my carb intake to the best of my ability (and trying to pay closer attention to meals that I can accurately judge), every unit of insulin, and testing as much as possible. I've also been taking this opportunity to use a different carb ratio than normal, which seems to be helping. My averages are down with less fluctuation and far fewer nasty highs.

Why is it so hard to get back on track after you fall off the diet wagon? Each day, I start out with good intentions, but somewhere along the line, my eating has gone straight to pot.
I think it started almost a month ago now, right after getting fasting bloodwork done at my endo's office. I "celebrated" with a breakfast at McDonald's, something I'd been craving for a while. Then I had a few run-ins with a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, waffle fries (dipped in mayo) and cole slaw.
After that was the Snickerdoodle incident (which I blamed on my friend Lizzy for introducing me to the sweet, slightly cinnamon flavored, sugar cookies at Whole Foods). Following closely on its heels was the chocolate chip cookie catastrophe. Now I'm in the midst of a full-blown cupcake bender.
Who do I think I am? What in the world makes me think I can eat these foods without consequences? (READ MORE)

When it comes to sitting down to eat a meal, I've always been a bit of a shoveler. Growing up we ate in front of the TV and we still do from time to time. I'm embarrassed to admit I usually go in for seconds too. Sometimes, if I'm eating something particularly tasty, I'll start planning my second bowlful before I'm even halfway finished with my first round.
So trying Paul McKenna's concept of eating conciously has been a bit of an eye opener. What really convinced me to give it a go is when he explained how many of us spend so much time thinking about food yet so little time eating it. It's true. I spend a lot of time thinking about food, planning meals, craving things I won't allow myself, etc. But when it comes time to sit down to eat, I shovel it in so fast I barely taste it. (READ MORE)

I starting preparing for my workout as soon as I woke up on Monday. I changed my basal rates to an alternate pattern so I wouldn't forget at 6:30pm to switch over the basal rate. I was set to go, pumped up for the workout later that evening.

 

When I got home from work at 5, I realized that I hadn't eaten lunch and I was feeling a bit low. I grabbed some cashews and strawberry ice cream (no, not mixed together). I wasn't quite hungry enough for dinner, but wanted something to tide me over. Over an hour later, I was feeling better but tired. I checked my blood sugar. 113. Perfect...kind of.

It's soft like velvet, it's sweet and buttery and melty, it's just a touch crisp on the outside, and salty. And after dipping a Wetzel's Pretzel into cream cheese I feel as if I've died and gone to heaven.

 

OK, not really, but Wetzel's Pretzels are one of those foods that I hate to love. I crave bread and have since forever. I also crave textures. Yes, really. There are times when I want something smooth like yogurt, or something thin like water, or something heavy like ice cream. So yeah, I crave textures.

I'll admit it. I'm a big fan of cheap wine. Yummy. Give me some Boones Farm Strawberry Zinfandel on a hot summer night, and I'll get my buzz on - and get it on good. And I used to, back in the day, enjoy a nice cigarette (or ten) with my wine. Even now, every so often, I'll get a craving for a cigarette. Thankfully, the urge is usually cured by the smell of a heavy smoker passing by and occasionally cured by a simple, single drag on another person's gross-stick. (READ MORE)

Surely, I thought when Toohey beeped at me mid-morning, it was one of those random beeps that I couldn't explain. Maybe even a no-delivery message.

 

"LOW RESERVOIR" was not what I wanted to see. With my new job in a new city, my commute is no longer just four blocks. Now I'm an hour away from home. I can't just scoot out for a few minutes if I forget something.

 

I scrolled down; 7 units would barely get me through lunch. I kicked myself because this morning before I left for work I checked how many units I had and knew I wouldn't be able to make it through the day. I made a note to stick a reservoir and a bottle of Novolog in my purse so I could make the change this morning when I ran out.

 

Clearly, I forgot.
