I started out at 192. I did a correction bolus and a carb bolus. The carb bolus was for four slices of pizza. I used the square bolus over 3 hours, hoping that I wouldn't end up too high.

 

I ate my pizza slices, enjoying every bite. By the time I finished eating, I had about two hours left on my square bolus. That should be perfect, I thought.

 

An hour later, I was 87. I still had almost half the insulin to deliver, so I suspended the bolus and drank a juice. I planned to check my blood sugar again within the next two hours to watch for the peak, then bolus the remaining insulin.

I started composing this post yesterday while I was flat on my back. However, the powerful drugs my doctor had me take for my severe back pain literally knocked me out.
It started yesterday morning as I was getting ready for work. I squatted down to get a new infusion set and my Quickserter out of my supply bucket, and wham my lower back completely seized up. I thought it was just a little spasm, but no matter what position I was in, my back hurt. (When I screamed and fell on the floor, No. 3 (who is 2) came running and asking, "You OK, Mom?" And then saying, "Es OK, Mom. Es OK, Mom.") I was able to make it to the bed--supplies in hand since I had removed my set before my shower.
My fasting yesterday was 144. I was in so much pain, that I knew it would affect my sugar. An hour after my fasting, I had shot up to 196. Nothing like a little stress to make your blood sugar go wild. (READ MORE)

As I went through my normal pre-bed routine, I checked off the usual things. I set things in order for class tomorrow. I made sure my assignments were completed. I took my contacts out. I checked my blood sugar.

 

When the number 172 came up, I was kind of surprised. I'd had an issue earlier and ended up with a 309. I'd spiked after lunch because I misjudged how many carbs were in the real soda I had. Sometimes sodas can go without boluses and I'll be perfectly in range after. And sometimes, like today, my body decides to utilize every last gram of carbohydrate.

For the past two weeks or so, my blood sugars have been running high. I had lowered my basals when I came back to school because I was having too many lows with my new schedule. I'm guessing that the basals need to be raised again since I've slowly adjusted to the schedule and I'm hitting exam times so my stress is increased.

After the picnic last night, I was extremely tired. It'd been an incredibly long week, we'd just played all kinds of games, and to top it off my blood sugar was low. So I ate some fruit and mixed nuts hoping I wouldn't have to eat anything heavier right before crashing into my bed. But my blood sugar wouldn't come up, it seemed to only be dropping. I drank juice and ate crackers, intently watching the CGMS to tell me when it was rising.

For the past few years, I've gotten into the bad diabetes habit of skipping boluses. Not food boluses. But blood sugar boluses. I have the habit of foregoing boluses when my blood sugar is 160 and under. I'll see a 140 or 155 and skip the bolus instead of bringing it down to 100. But above 160, I'm good about bolusing to bring the number down (something about those 180s and 200s scare me into submission).

 

I know that this extremely bad habit leaves my averages a little higher than they should be. And I'm not sure exactly why I do this...maybe over the years, a 150 doesn't seem so bad. Maybe I just get tired of so many injections a day so I leave off the "unnecessary" ones. Maybe it's some habit that I started in my childhood.

My averages are definitely down in the last three days. I'm having a lot more lows, but far fewer highs. And the highs I am having, I can pinpoint generally what caused them (which is a heck of a lot different than last week where I was bouncing around for no apparent reason).

 

Moving the evening Lantus dose up by a few hours has stopped those evening highs, which I'm extremely grateful for considering those highs are the same ones that start my day off. And beginning and ending my days in the 200's is not my idea of good diabetes management.

Because of my recent tummy troubles, I've decided to put off the Metformin start for at least another week. So instead of starting Metformin today, I've decided to get back into the groove of the need for insulin. Instead of purposefully skipping Lantus doses and fudging my boluses, I'm going to get into the routine of doing these things right.

 

My current Lantus doses are split at midnight (16 units) and noon (18 units). However, I've had a lot of trouble remembering them or getting them on time lately without a schedule. So I think I need to try a one dose Lantus shot for awhile. I've done it before and it just doesn't give me as tight of control as I like, but it's better than no insulin at all.

I don't really know what to think about my blood sugars since I changed the Lantus. Saturday night, I lowered it from 34 units to 33 to stop the drastic/constant lows that I was having. It's been three nights of that and I just can't see the outcome yet.

 

Sunday was okay. I woke up higher than I went to bed but I'd also eaten a snack without any bolus to cover. I ran in the 190 to 250 range through the day which was frustrating but I wasn't eating the best.

 

Monday, I woke up at 239 which was 20 points lower than I went to bed at (with no correction that night). I stayed in range for most of the day except for a spike to 287 and a slow decline that bounced from 199 to 237. The 287 was my fault as I missed a bolus for a low carb snack in the afternoon thinking that I was dropping low (I had the feeling but not the numbers to back it up).
