I have had neuropathy in my both of my feet for a while now. I have almost gotten used to the tingling and burning pains that come now and then.

Almost.

The tingling is not nearly as bad as the feeling as if a lighted match is being held under your foot and it can be on the heel, at the arch or near my toes. Anywhere is free game and at any time. I hate it.

Lately I have noticed something different. My feet are cold, ice cold. I check for color to make sure blood is present and my pulse is there which is seems to be good but this temperature change freaks me out.

As I was going to bed I started to grunt in pain. My wife asked what was wrong and I told her how just the blankets rubbing on my feet hurt. And how no matter what I did, my feet felt like they were cold.

I lifted my right foot and pushed it up against my left shin to feel the cold and felt nothing.

For a variety of reasons that all add up to a perfect storm of unfortunate for yours truly, I have gone off my diabetes medications and shall be off of them for a few days. I ran out of both at the same time, and it happened on a weekend, and a holiday weekend, no less, so there was no one at my doctor's office to call. Furthermore, if I'd been paying attention (and really, why would I? It's only my health we're talking about here), I would have seen that I had no more refills on my prescription, meaning that in order to get more, I would need to make an appointment and go in to see my doctor again, which of course I should have done a few months ago, but my book came out and I've been busy being Mister Fancy Pants, etc. etc. etc., blah blah blah. Really, there are a number of excuses, but they all come down to my own personal dedication to being the very best cautionary tale I can be for the rest of you. No need to thank me, I do it out of love. (READ MORE)

Call me a glutton for punishment, but I like to buy my shoes for their cute factor rather than their comfort. I have way too many pairs of shoes and boots to count. By majority, they are high heels, trendy, and semi-insane.

Usually, my feet don't really give me issues. I've heard and read plenty of things about how diabetics really have to watch for foot problems. I'm well aware that my feet do need a little extra care and attention.

But that doesn't usually stop me from wearing four inch heels or strappy sandals with absolutely no support. Because usually, nothing happens. I get a blister every now and then but they heal and I get over it. Who doesn't get blisters in four inch heels?

Coffea Arabica, cup o'joe, java, brew, jamocha, mud, caffiene, cafe au lait, espresso, cappachino, latte, breve - you name it - I LOVE it. They CANNOT have my coffee!
It used to be that coffee lowered your risk of type 2 diabetes. Go ahead and get hooked on it, but once you get that diagnosis, now you gotta go cold turkey.
I'm sure you've seen the news to which I'm referring. It's also here. (READ MORE)

It's 10:30 p.m.
I'm in bed. In my night shirt.
I'm coughing, although I took (sugar-free) cough syrup.
I'm in bed.
I check my sugar.
76.
Crap. I can't go to bed this low.
But I'm already in bed.
I'm tired.
I'm coughing.
Must get up early to go to mass with No. 1.
Can't convince myself to go downstairs and drink a glass of milk.
Because I'm already in bed.
The floor is cold.
I'm coughing and tired.
The milk is downstairs.
My bed is warm.
The kitties are snuggly.
Now would be a nice time to see a trend line.
I took the sensor off five hours ago.
I'm. Already. In. Bed.
Waking in a cold sweat will not be fun.
The milk is downstairs.
My cough medicine isn't working.
Rain is soothing and wants me to go to sleep.
My bed is warm.
The floor is cold.

Getting ready for work this morning and listening to music as I often do, it was hard not to notice the striking juxtaposition of what was happening in the next room and the gorgeous melody filling the kitchen air. This morning it was "Cold Water," sung by Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan.

Cold, cold water surrounds me now

"You’re hurting me!"

And all I’ve got is your hand

"Ow! You’re hurting me!"

Lord, can you hear me now?

"I’m not trying to, Charlie. Please try not to move!"

Lord, can you hear me now?

"Wait!"

Lord, can you hear me now?

We did everything we could. He just wouldn’t ever come down.

This was a night from hell.

Shot #1.

519 at bedtime. He was in no mood for a shot. He became irrational - fighting us.

"Do you want to be 500 all night?"

"Yes."

"Do you want to spend the night in the hospital?"

"Yes."

He knocked his head on the wall repeatedly as I searched for a spot to stick him.

"Charlie!"

Shot #2

Midnight. Blood sugar soared back up after coming down just a bit.

"Not good," I called to Susanne.

I have a sore throat.   And I feel something, like a cold, coming.  I'm hot in a room that's not hot, clammy, and I'm tired.

I went to the gym today anyhow, all sneezy and gross.  If I'd been another gym-goer, I would have been annoyed with someone like me.  Someone spreading their germs while getting their 45 minutes of cardio and 15 minutes of weight training.

The truth is, I don't get sick all that often.  I have little threats of a cold coming or a belly ache threatening, but I usually fend it off with rest, a day home from work to sleep, water, and a little bit of cold or stomach calming medicine.

One of the earliest "grown-up" movies I remember seeing in the cinema was a comedy called Cold Turkey, starring Dick Van Dyke. The premise was that a small town would win what, for them, was an obscenely large amount of money if everybody in the entire town could stop smoking, "cold turkey" — that is, suddenly, as if the "off" button had been pressed and the power disconnected — for an entire month. The lengths the town fathers went to, to win, and the lengths the tobacco company went to, to ensure they didn't, made for laughter and hijinks that were accessible to even middle-school children.

Today, the first Friday of February, is national "Wear Red" day in honor (or observance) of Women's Heart Health Awareness, as spearheaded by the "Go Red for Women" campaign. So of course I will be wearing red to work and I've been handing out Red Dress pins.
