When my dLife mail showed up in my inbox with Melissa's Diabetes Viewpoint column When It's Time to Change Doctors, it really clicked with me.
Lately, I've been having problems with my endo. Granted, I'm pregnant and extra needy these days, but I just feel that I'm not getting the personalized attention that I deserve and need.
Truth be told, I never see him any more. Once I month, I come in to his office, wait for what is often an eternity (despite intentionally scheduling for "slow times") and when my name is finally called, I get to see a nurse instead of the doctor.
Every other week, I e-mail my blood sugar logs to the doctor, along with any questions or concerns I have and a brief update. For a while, it was mostly, "Things are going good. I hit a little bump, but I upped my insulin and it smoothed out." (READ MORE)

Being back to school is the hot topic lately. For me, being back to school is a big change. Not only do I move away from home again every semester, but also my schedule is constantly changing. The stress is different. The food is different. The exercise is different (walking an extra 3 miles a week around campus). My control is different.

 

Over the summer, I really watched what I was eating. I finally got my other health issues sorted out and had the potential to lose the weight I had gained because of them. I was motivated. So I started limiting my portions, choosing "smarter" carbs, and decreasing my overall intake of carbs.

I started logging again on Sunday. Sunday's logs weren't all filled out, but I was diligent about it yesterday. For the first time in a very, very long time, I had an entire day of blood sugars and food on paper.
It felt good enough that I continued this morning (insert uncontrollable sarcastic laughing here). OK so it's not that bad. I am a bit nervous, though, about how long it will last. The logging, I mean; not the laughter. (READ MORE)

A friend of mine has just found a new endo and is loving it. I'm very excited for her because I know how much trouble she went through with her last endo. I remember telling her the difference between her reluctant-to-listen-to-the-patient doctor and Dr. C: "After having never spoken to Dr. C about Symlin before, I came into his office for a regular check up, said I wanted to try Symlin and 15 minutes later the nurse was hooking me up with a sample pen."

While I had a lot of freedom when I spoke with Dr. C, I have often wondered how much latitude he gave me because he knew how involved I am in the diabetes community, knew that I was up on the latest information and technology, and was proactive. I was sad to leave him behind. (Maybe there's a little too much ego there, but I really got very little resistance from Dr. C about anything.)

This might sound odd and I'll probably get various opinions on the topic, but I decided to try online "dating." I haven't had success with meeting the right person here in college, so having someone else pick for me seemed like a great idea. My logic is that more mature, serious guys will be on dating sites, rather than the typical college scene.

 

As I set up my profile on one of the sites, I started to wonder about how to present my conditions (both my diabetes and my other conditions). I decided to leave it out of the "About Me" sections for fear that people might judge me and move on. I didn't want to have my "cover" read incorrectly.

After a couple of days worth of Christmas Goodies my insulin pump was ready for a new reservoir. I thought about this on the drive home and somewhere throughout all the evening rituals suchs as checking emails and opening up mail I completely forgot about my pump.
It was right before we were going to sit down for dinner and I realized that I had not refilled. I check my pump that shows -:-- and the time left. Great! I grab my bottle of insulin and all my supplies. Is it just me or does insulin turn into champagne when you are in a hurry? I swear my reservoir looked like I had it filled with soap! There were bubbles everywhere. (READ MORE)

This weekend was a busy one.

 

We went to a party, a wedding, and a movie not to mention the typical disc golf game Saturday morning and church on Sunday.

 

Most of our weekends are jam packed with stuff and always right there at the very top of the pile is my diabetes. It is always right there on top of everything else. But this weekend was a little different.

 

Usually with all the running around and stuff going on my diabetes tends to get out of control on weekends. I tend to run high because of the bad food choices I make and end up spending the weekend correcting for many mistakes. But not this weekend.

What types of spiritual practices or mental exercises do you use to help you cope with diabetes? For me, I like to mix things up and do whatever feels right at the time. Typically I use martial arts, exercise or various "mental exercises" like praying, meditation and reading spiritual books. I also love to listen to a variety of music and sit and relax around fires. This weekend will have me trying something that I have never attempted before but something that I have always been interested and curious about - a Native American sweat lodge.

Being sick sucks. Right now my body aches, my head hurts, my ears feel like they have plugs in them, and I feel out of it. The good news though is my sugars aren't out of whack,.which really is the only thing I would be concerned about. Actually, with this new outlook I've been having, my sugars have been fantabulous. It's the funniest, yet most simple and ridiculous, concept with this disease. Ready for it? Here it is,..watch what you eat. Isn't that crazy?! I know it sounds bizarre, but it's true.

And yeah I realize life happens and with it all comes things that affect our sugar. Stress, joy, sadness, adrenaline, and the list goes on and on, you name it,

But really, if you somewhat obsess over what it is you put into your body then you can control your sugars. Yeah, it might mean that you have no life and that all you do is sit at home and watch movies or play on the computer, but you really CAN control your sugars.
