You know the scene in It's a Wonderful Life when George goes ape shit on Uncle Billy when he loses the money?

"Where's the money you silly, stupid, old fool?! Where's that money? Do you realize what this means? It means bankruptcy and scandal and prison! That's what it means!"

That's how I feel right about now. I should be asleep right now but I can't. I'm too pissed. Why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why, why (bear with me - just a few more) why, why, WHY do we give him a big fat stromboli for dinner? Why???

"Why the stromboli you silly, stupid, old fool??? Do you realize what this means? It means high blood sugars and ketones and corrective needle injections and maybe no hockey for Charlie in the morning! That's what it means!"

I am snuggled safe in my bed, with my insulin pump tucked up against me, working just fine.  I wish I was aware of this.

But I'm not.

I am in the living room of my Aunty Dot's house in Weymouth, MA.  The purple seventies style shag carpeting growing up between my toes like grass.  I am leaning on a plaid recliner.  My brothers are there.  We're kids.  And we're with my dad.  We're eating chinese food.  Only my chinese food is pink.  If I explained all of the things wrong with the above scenario (for example: my Aunty Dot has been gone a long time and she never actually had a shag carpet), the pink chinese food would seem perfectly fine. .

It wasn't too long ago that Charlie was a picky eater. Even if we offered him run-of-the-mill kid food like peanut butter or hamburgers, he would cover his mouth with his hands and make a face as if we were asking him to try pig intestines.

For months and months, we begged him to try new foods. And for months and months, he wouldn't budge. That is, until now. It's as if a switch turned on and he's suddenly a food connoisseur. That is why last night was absolute hell.

We did Chinese take-out. My big mouth had to go and ask him if he wanted to share sweet and sour chicken with his sister.

"It's like chicken fingers, only better," I said.

Chinese Food has been a no-no for a long time in my diabetes life.  Eating it almost always results in huge swings - highs just after, lows an hour or two in, then highs that won't quit beginning around 6 hours out.  Not fun.

Today, I had my first venture with a CGM and Chinese Food - and oh, the joy!  I'm 7 hours out as of right now and I've been riding a smooth 100-120 mg/dl all afternoon and evening.  There was a brief period at 2 hours out where my dual wave bolus appeared to be having a little too much impact (a 116 mg/dl with a down arrow), but three glucose tabs handled that quite nicely and allowed me to keep that steady 100-120 mg/dl line.

Considering the many battles that I fight with diabetes on any given day, I'm always pleased when things work out. I love success, in any shape or form. But especially in my diabetes world.

So Saturday night while I was visiting my dad, aunt and uncle, we decided to get Chinese food from a local restaurant (the best Chinese in all of Texas, I promise). I was definitely excited, but also silently stressing about how many carbs might be in my meal. Restaurant food is always hard to judge, but especially when it's something like Chinese at a small town joint that doesn't have carb counts available.

As I ordered my meal, I began to mentally guess the carbs. I'd splurged with my favorite: Sweet and Sour Chicken. It came with an eggroll and steamed rice. I was starting out my meal at 140, so whatever the carb count I'd need to add an extra unit to buffer the out of range blood sugar.

Marvin and I spent the weekend with my family and doing a lot of driving across the state of Texas. Generally, Marvin is incredibly understanding of my health issues. He's been through many ups and downs with it. He completely gets what diabetes does and is for me.

But Saturday night, he said something that was a little unsettling because he hadn't said it that way before. Sometimes when I'm not feeling well or having a few "bad days" (pain, nausea, fatigue), he'll make a comment that I'm always sick. Nothing concerning though.

On Saturday evening, my stomach was a little upset while we were watching movies at my mom's house. We'd eaten Chinese food for lunch and I think it just wasn't sitting well with me. I'd also gone from low to high in a 2 hour span. I expressed that I didn't feel well to Marvin.

To say June was a tough month for us financially is a huge understatement. I won't go into details, but suffice it to say, I found myself getting very creative with how to pay bills and continue to eat and get my meds. Oh, and pay for daycare so I could go to work.
Along the way, because we were living at the bottom of a pit, our life insurance policies lapsed. Naturally, the company sent us a letter, but I was avoiding all envelopes that I didn't believe had money in them. So I overlooked the notice. Furthermore, our insurance agent couldn't get to us until October to fix the problem. So we didn't know until about a month ago that we had been living without life insurance for several months. This is just a Happy Thanksgiving post. It'll be a little schmoopy, so if you're not into that kind of mush, carry on!
The holidays are a bittersweet time for my family; and for Bob's family. Over the past ten years, between the two families, we have lost seven grandparents, several aunts and uncles, and one young cousin. All between October and January. The holidays bring joy, but they also bring memories that can sometimes put a damper on things. This year, Bob and I had decided to make our own tradition. We had planned to get chinese food and some movies and stay at home. When Bob called his mother to ask one last time if she'd like for us to come there, and she said no she wasn't much in the holiday mood and woudn't be cooking, he shared our plan. The next day, his mom called back and said that she loved the idea of a new tradition and that she would be making homemade chinese food if we'd like to come. And, you know what? We CAN'T WAIT!
