I love to cook. In the spring and summer, I like to try out different salads. In the fall and winter months, my kitchen is brimming with bubbling pots of soups and stews. So today, with a dusting of snow on the ground and football on the TV, it seemed like the perfect day to make chili.
Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes--and especially now that I'm that I'm trying to lose weight--healthy cooking has become a priority. I've learned a few tricks for keeping full on the fewest calories and carbs, like drinking lots of water, substituting a relaxing cup tea for dessert and filling up on lots of veggies. (READ MORE)

I love to cook, but I generally don't have the time or energy to make my normal meals. Like meatloaf, chili, or shepherd's pie. So my usual cooking goal is to make a simple, easy, but complete meal. Something that can include all the major portions without taking hours to peel, mash, or bake (this is also especially helpful since my oven doesn't exactly work).

I take after my dad in the fact that we both cook in a "throw everything together" kind of way. We'll grab all sorts of random items to toss into a recipe. Throw some cocoa in the chili or some green beans in the pasta. Whatever you have, it probably can be used.

For awhile, I got into making a quick pasta dish that had pasta, green beans, and kidney beans in it. I'd add some spice and olive oil and eat on it for days. It took all of twenty minutes, a few dollars, and tasted good to me. I really like kidney beans though.

Last night, I took 34 units of Lantus instead of 33 units (note that this is a brand new bottle of Lantus) and increased my bolus for dinner. I dropped to 87 before bed, drank part of a Coke, and prayed for the best. I woke up at 172.

I had a medium sized bowl of high protein cereal, did 10 units of Humalog, and went on my day. Around three hours later, I was 234. Two correction units of Humalog. An hour and a half later, my pre-lunch check was 250 despite the feeling that I was dropping.

I had a small bowl of chili and a salad. I did 8 units of Humalog. And now I'm waiting. Waiting to see where this number ends up, waiting to see if anything drops. Waiting, waiting, waiting!

Everything seems to be all over the place lately. Despite catching up on school work and actually de-stressing this week, my blood sugars are bouncing like rubber balls in an airplane bin. My averages are up, yet I'm having rashes of severe lows. And by severe, I don't mean symptoms. I mean numbers and hypoglycemic unawareness.

Like last Thursday night, I cooked chili for a friend. Ate a giant bowl with cornbread, bolused for what I expected was way too little, and went on my way. Only to feel an urge to test a few hours later. No symptoms, just something in my brain saying that I should bite the bullet to test. And that urging left me staring at a 37. How?

Remember that song that the Red Hot Chili Peppers covered? Roller Coaster of Love? I always think of Olivia's crazy blood sugars when I hear that song. And this week, that song has been on a permanent loop in my head.

Starting on Saturday, Olivia's blood sugar never got below 168. She mentioned that she was running high, but I didn't download her pump information until Monday. That's when I saw exactly how high she'd been running. It wasn't pretty.

She had a high of 527. Most of her blood sugars were hovering around the 300 mark. This was exacerbated by the fact that, once again, she's been neglecting to test and put the blood sugar reading into her pump. On Saturday, there were only 2 readings in the pump. Everything else was just a bolus for carb intake.

Lately, I've really been annoyed by the daily math that goes into this disease. Maybe it's just because my mind is on other things at the moment so I'm just sick of calculating and remembering. Especially since I'm supposed to be switching my carb ratio from 1:10 to 1:8. It's made the math a lot harder for me...even with a college degree.

I really want a meter that calculates for me. Perhaps there is a meter out there like this and I'm unaware (if there is, please enlighten me!). But my ideal gadget would include all my meter capabilities as well as the pump capabilites (minus the insulin giving part).

Sometimes I think it would be easier to be Type 1. Being on multiple daily injections would require me to be on multiple daily blood sugar tests. Not that being Type 2 doesn't require that, but while I don't always eat right and test when I should, I am dilligent about taking my long-acting insulin and Metformin. Getting myself to test more often (so that I could take the right amount of medicine) might just get me to do the rest right. (READ MORE)

I knew he was high when I walked in the door;

His body was twitching, there was nary a snore.

His complexion was rosy, his hair dampened black;

I knew he was high before the pricker went "clack!"

The horrible number stayed like a tattoo,

Spitefully showcasing 392.

With insulin active, we gave it an hour

And whispered a prayer to a higher power.

I awoke from a dream that Obama had won

When Susanne said, "Carey! He's 421!"

I stumbled to his bedside, my wits on the fringe;

Susanne poured juice and loaded a syringe.

I pinched some plump flesh on the back of his arm,

Inserted the needle, then set my alarm.

2:30 am - I walked through a fog,

I tend not to be as fascinated as many are by those folk who spend an entire work week's worth of time trying to get their groceries for free (or nearly free). The bottom line is, I don't have kids, I don't have pets, and most of the things for which I find coupons are either things I can't use, don't use, or don't need. The food items are almost always in those "center aisles" of the supermarket we, as people with diabetes, are cautioned to Avoid Like The Plague, and many have so much sodium that you'd think they included the entire "corpus" of Lot's wife (after she had been "turned into a pillar of salt").
