Okay, I will warn you up front that this post is a total rant and has no other substance besides the fact that I need to let off some steam. I am also looking for some of you who have dealt with this annoying stereotype.
As I was minding my own business here at my desk the janitor comes up to me and asks me if I have to take shots everyday. I realize that he was listening to a conversation I was having with a co-worker about insulin and so on. A total eavesdropping moment right? So I answer, "nope." And totally leave it at that.
He says, "Oh you got off of insulin. That's good. Just a diet now or pills?"
"No I have an insulin pump."
"There is a gal in another office I clean that has to shoot up every day." Then he does it. He does this sort of motion with his right hand towards his left upturned arm. As if he is shooting up heroin or something right into his vein! (READ MORE)

It's not like we're pressuring Charlie to begin testing himself. Whenever he is ready to take on that responsibility is fine with us.  But it honestly seems like it's never going to happen. He has no desire to take the reins. I remember feeling the same way when we went through potty training with him. It took forever.

 

I figured he'd be 18 years old, on his back in the living room – legs up in the air - holding moist baby wipes and rash ointment while a girl named Amanda waited in the dining room dressed in cap and gown, flicking cigarette ash into a paper cup. "Mom! C'mon! Are you gonna change my diaper or what!!! We're gonna miss graduation!"

Remember a while back, when I said Olivia was a pretty compliant, easy-going kid? Yeah, well karma just came and bit me in the arse. Holy mood swings, Batman!

 

I don't know what's going on with her (besides the fact that she's a 13 year-old girl), but I'm about at my wits end. She's sullen, she's mouthy, she's on the phone all. the. freaking. time. But what's really pissing me off is her failure to check her blood sugar.

 

Up until a week or so ago, I'd ask her every time I saw her eating something and before every meal, if she'd check. She'd say yes or no, depending, and everything was fine. Suddenly, though, I'm getting this attitude.

 

"Did you check?" I'd ask.

 

HUGE, HEAVING sigh, pffffing of the hair and a long, drawn out, sarcastic "Yessssssss, Mother, I diiiiiiiiiiid."

Kerri, our buddy ol' pal here at Blogabetes, sent us bloggers some writing prompts the other day. One prompt that hit home with me was writing about what people can do during these cold months to stay active and keep the pounds off. It is a natural process for us as humans to throw on a few extra lbs as the cold weather starts to approach. With that in mind, I for one, really enjoy working out in MY VERY OWN LIVING ROOM. Even as dedicated as some of us are to working out, it is still a pain to get out into the cold. Nobody likes running to their car, scraping the ice off, and waiting for it warm up just to drive to the gym!! It is hard enough for people to be motivated on the warm days. That's where your living room and your creativity come into play.

For a number of years, I was the only diabetic I knew. Diagnosed when I was a little kid, there wasn't an army of advocates knocking down the doors of my school. As far as I knew, the only meter in my elementary school was mine. In my high school, there were two meters: mine and the one belonging to a classmate's older sister. No one else I knew was taking a fingerstick before having the orange slices at soccer practice, or before tap dance lessons.
My first taste of a diabetes community came one summer at camp. Growing up in New England, I had access to one of the best diabetes camps in the country - Clara Barton Camp. I spent six summers at CBC, giggling with my fellow campers, singing my lungs out at the nightly campfire meetings, and making friends. (READ MORE)

I've joked about adjusting Charlie's happiness levels due to the effect it has on his blood sugar. I'm finding now it's not so funny. The adrenalin that comes from excitement shoots Charlie's blood sugar up like a bottle rocket.

The latest culprit: summer street hockey.

Everything was fine on game day. We were at the pool having fun. Charlie clocked in at a lovely 132 just before I made the mistake of saying, "OK, let's go Charlie. We have to go home and get ready for hockey."

What a horrible dad I am to say such harmful words. In retrospect maybe I should have spoken with the enthusiasm of a corpse …

"You have that thing, Charlie. It's really nothing though."

It occurred to us that Charlie doesn't get many requests for play dates from his classmates. It's not like he doesn't have friends. He gets along with everyone in his class. He's actually fairly popular. Still, the invitations to come over houses are scarce.

 

It makes us wonder if the parents think it would just be too difficult. Or maybe they just assume we could never just leave him somewhere without someone trained in diabetes care keeping an eye on him. Well, they wouldn't be wrong if they thought that. We want to let him do things without us hovering over him like low-gliding seagulls, but how can we? He doesn't test himself yet.

What I really need is a good online diabetes-related battle. Nothing lights up the 'ole blog switchboard like a feud. I came across a rather heated one in the blogosphere recently. So lucky. All I ever get is nothing but stinkin' compassion and support. Anyone got a beef with me? Anyone? Come on, don't make me beg.

 

Type 2s? Come on, type 2s. When was the last time I addressed your concerns? How about like never. All I do is talk about my type 1 son. Booooring!

 

Type 1s? Come on, hit me!

 

I thought I had a real shot with the Sotomayor piece, but unfortunately most of those who commented, directed their anger not at me but instead at the fictional characters I created. Sigh.
