Sometimes I am shocked at how invisible diabetes can be. I was having practice at church the other night for the contemporary band when my Bass player asked us to pray for him.
"Of course! What is going on?"
He explains to me that he is having surgery on his eye to drain fluid in it and would just like us to keep him in our prayers. He started telling us about how he had this same surgery on his other eye and that it worked really well so he his hopeful that this surgery will be another success. I asked him what causes the problem he is having.

Ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes, I have always wondered about how celebrities with diabetes are doing with their control. I remember the first celebrity I found out had diabetes was Halle Berry. When I realized this I guess I was a little "amazed". Looking back, I feel pretty stupid about being shocked that a CELEBRITY had what I had. For some reason, hearing that news was good news. I remember saying to myself, "Yes! That's GREAT!." I was so happy to see that EVEN DIABETICS COULD STILL BECOME FAMOUS! Maybe I am a little selfish, but don't we all want fame and fortune ;) (READ MORE)

It's been a bit busy this week, leaving me somewhat late on reporting back on Saturday's d-group meeting to see Breakthrough: The Dramatic Story of the Discovery of Insulin, a special exhibit showing at the New York Historical Society. Since I had to work Sunday, this ended up as the total of my World Diabetes Day celebrations this year.

Olivia recently pulled a stunt that simultaneously scared the crap out of me and made me madder that a sack full of wet cats.

She, against my instructions, set up an account on My Space. I found out she had it a while ago and would check her site every few days just to make sure everything was kept above board. She mostly used it to talk to her friends and to check out celebrities like Hannah Freakin' Montana. Oy. I let her know that I knew about it and that I was checking it out and she was fine with that.

Until this weekend, however. She changed her age to read 17 (she's 13) and some random guy contacted her. They talked for a bit until he started getting graphic at which point, she told him to leave her alone. What made me angry was that she gave the guy her name, her school and her address. What sent me thru the roof was that I didn't hear this from her, but rather from the vice principal at her school. Yeah, that one went over well.

I had one of those moments today that reminded me what I enjoy most being a writer: It gives me access to things I would otherwise never experience. Today I got to sit in a room filled with diabetes experts--nurses, doctors, dietitians--you know, people with lots of letters after their names. I had no business being a part of their group, but as a writer who tends to focus on diabetes, I was invited in.
The seminar was on gestational diabetes and the treatment of pregnancy complicated by pre-existing diabetes. To many people, this may not sound very exciting, but to me, it was better than going to a rock concert (and don't get me wrong, I love music!). (READ MORE)

Well, Carnival for a Cure, anyway -- the annual fundraising event presented by the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI). Four years ago, it was at this event that Nick Jonas went public with his type 1 diabetes. This year, he returned, courtesy of Bayer HealthCare, to thank everyone and to continue to inspire children, teens, and adults with diabetes. Through dLife, I had the opportunity to speak with Nick and ask him about his life with diabetes. My own challenge was, in ten minutes, to see if I could learn something that hasn't been asked and answered hundreds of times over. (READ MORE)

While I posted yesterday that Nick Jonas was in New York Sunday for the Diabetes Research Institute's Carnival for a Cure, I didn't mention much about the event itself. Billed as "New York City's largest indoor carnival," the event was a cross between a street fair and an arcade, aimed largely at the under-twelve crowd. Three walls of the Metropolitan Pavillion were lined with inflatable mazes, slides, and bounce rooms, and a human-powered "mechanical bull". Several street-fair games-of-skill, aimed again at the under-twelve set, occupied a block of canopies in the center of the room. Prize tickets were given to the winners, and by the end of the afternoon almost every family there was wrangling multiple shopping bags of toys. (READ MORE)

Every November, those of us in the diabetes community bewail the "invisibility" of our condition, our passion, our advocacy over the remaining eleven months of the year. One of our ongoing gripes is that -- unlike breast cancer's pink ribbon, the red ribbon of AIDS awareness, Livestrong's iconic yellow wristband, or the double-cross of the American Lung Association -- there is no single, universally-recognized symbol or color representing diabetes.
