I learned one thing today - people do not like it when a stranger approaches them with a piece of paper.
My piece of paper said, "How Far Can You Drive a Marshmallow? Find out and help support a cure for type 1 diabetes."
We tried to spread the word as to what we were up to under our canopy as golfers arrived at the course today.
As I attempted to hand the piece of paper to one guy, his body language said, "back off peasant!"
"You have no interest in what I'm about to hand you, do you?" I asked as I retracted the paper back slowly.
"No," he said.
Another guy just said, "Put it there," motioning with his 5 iron to his golf bag. I'm assuming my little piece of paper came in handy when he needed to spit out his peppermint gum on the back nine.

Charlie clutched Baby Doggy, a small puppy with a thin blue collar, and pulled the comforter higher onto his shoulders as we tucked him in. Baby Doggy's age starting to show in its fading gray coat and crusty tail. He also squeezed a small stuffed turtle named Pop as Susanne removed his insulin pump from his waist and gave him a correction for a blood sugar of 530.
Diabetes has spawned many emotions from Charlie. It has made him angry many times, frustrated often and ferociously defiant. On rare occasions, it's even made him happy if you can believe that. Skipping long lines at Disney comes to mind. Oh, and you should see how he dances around the hospital gift shop after an endo appointment.
But, on this night, something new. He was scared of diabetes.
"What if it goes up to 700?"
"What if it goes up to 1100?"
"Does it go up that high?"

A question was posed to me the other day about diabetics and their highs and lows. The question was from the sibling of a diabetic, who is also a good friend of mine. I had just experienced an unexpected high (I'm now attributing it to my own negligence in keeping my infusion site fresh). He asked, "Why do you bounce from one extreme to the other?"
His sibling has had great success with the pump and is running stable after a period of prolonged highs on MDI's. For me, I do experience extremes. But mostly, I experience lows. I answered his question in a simple statement, "Because we're all different."

If you have only one day to see the Tour of Somerville, Monday's the one to aim for. The Borough of Somerville puts on a day-long festival that starts with a Memorial Day parade before proceeding to a family fun-ride and the day's races. Vendors of cycling gear, healthy-lifestyles, and other stuff are set up on the lawn in front of City Hall; club team tents are lined up on the lawn along the side street; and the whole area is punctuated with local fraternal organizations selling burgers, hot dogs, and other "hand" foods while spectators line the barriers along the route. It's also the day Team Type 1 - sanofi-aventis plays "meet the public" in a big way, signing posters and team cards under the Sanofi tent as well as racing in three or more of the day's criteriums.

There are a lot of things in this world that I don't understand and don't choose to understand. Politics is one of them. I despise politics. I don't do office politics, I don't play games with people, I feel like I'm a straight-shoting tell-it-like-it-is kind of person. So, I really don't like politics. Which means I don't pay attention to bills and votes and all that nonsense. I should, I've tried, but I don't.
I do know enough to know that the passage of the health-care reform bill today and the fact that it's being sent to President Obama's desk to be signed in to law (which it will) is a big deal.

I love music.
Ever since I was a little kid I could sing and dance to every song on the Earth, Wind, and Fire greatest hits record. I would dance whenever Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder was played even if it was a jukebox in a crowded restaurant. And no matter the time of night, when Barney Miller’s theme song started my mother said I would come running from my room in my PJ’s to dance to the song in front of the TV.
I love playing it, listening to it, and even writing it sometimes. When I was a kid I played the trumpet. In Junior High learned percussion which I played throughout high school and in my 20’s I learned to play guitar. Lots of music always playing around my home and car. I love it.

I completed my first JDRF Walk this morning! It was very exciting. Despite having no idea what to expect, it was fun and went off without much of a glitch.
My final Team Lindsey consisted of three other people and myself. Two girls, two guys. Two diabetics, two non-D's. It was a fun group.
We made it the whole 5k walking at a fairly brisk pace. The two diabetics held steady with our blood sugars. I ended the walk at a lovely 136 after eating a small (38 carb) breakfast with no bolus and dialing down the basal by 0.25.
