We all know the importance of exercise and the many benefits we get from it. Today I would like to give some ideas about different ways to achieve a solid workout. Many of us have daily or weekly routines that we follow. We spend each workout doing the exact same thing as before. I want to stress the importance of mixing it up.

For example, if you are a die hard cardio fan then try adding in some various resistance exercises. Let's say that you take a walk each morning for 45 minutes. You might walk the exact same trail at the exact same intensity. Next time, consider the following variations.

I have finally decided to get my act together. I've had enough of yo-yoing bloodsugar. I've been lazy about my gym routine for long enough.

 

This week was a good start at getting back on track.

 

I tested my basal rates over the weekend and on Monday and found that I needed to make a minor adjustment or two. The new basal rates kicked ass on Tuesday and Wednesday and have been treating me well today. Step one - check.

What kinds of exercises, hobbies, or activities do you enjoy doing and what kinds of things do you do to navigate around blood sugar issues? This was my random thought of the day so far, so I thought I would share it with you guys and see if you would tell me your stories in return.

Personally, one of my most favorite passions is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am training about 5 times a week or so, it makes me feel great and I love it. But one thing about Jiu Jitsu is that it's very intense and it's difficult to find the balance between having good sugars and being able to participate fully, say for example, like any non-diabetic person would.

It seems like lately I've felt more abnormal than ever before in my life. I've always known I wasn't like the rest of the world. I have always been the different kid, the one who had to eat different food, the one who did shots all the time. I thought that I wouldn't feel so different when I got older. I figured that with time diabetes would be just a part of my life like being a brunette or having freckles. Now I'm getting older and diabetes is completely ingrained in me, but I still feel different. (READ MORE)

I could never be a beauty queen. Aside from the fact that I think beauty pageants are ridiculous, I have this horrible flab on my arms that would prevent me from giving that trademark Miss America wave; I'd wind up slapping myself in the face with my arm flab!
It's not a part of my body I enjoy. I've always tried to cover my arms up partly because I don't like how big they are. While I don't envision wearing sleeveless shirts anytime soon, I have decided that a little weight training, in addition to my morning walk, might do my arms some good.
I suppose I was slightly inspired to start this based on a thread at Diabetic Mommy (www.diabeticmommy.com) where someone asked about the different affects of cardio and weight training on blood sugar. From what I read, it seemed like weight training caused more lows than cardio, although no one could really explain why. (READ MORE)

Over the summer, I developed a regular workout routine that helped me lose weight and maintain better blood sugars. When I got back to school, I set out to do the same. But after a couple weeks of doing well, my routine quickly dwindled to become non-existent.

 

I gained two pounds back and my averages are definitely not as stable as they were over the summer. Yet I can't seem to motivate myself to get to the gym. I could make the time, if I truly wanted to, so it isn't like it's impossible. And I have two workout buddies that are there any time I want to.

Last week my husband saw an ad in our local newspaper for a free self-defense class at the hospital. He insisted that I go. I thought it would be a great way to learn how to defend myself, so I eagerly went along.
Last night as I prepared to walk out the door I realized I hadn't eaten dinner. I suspected that since the class was being taught by a martial arts instructor that there would be some physical fitness involved. I wondered if I should have a snack or at least test my sugar before I left, but in the back of my mind I knew I'd be OK since I had been eating rather poorly that afternoon (as usual). (READ MORE)

I am on the eliptical trainer, rather lost in the music coming from my Ipod. I'm into the second half of my one hour of cardio for the day. I'm starting to feel a little weak - so I keep my legs moving and grab my test kit from the water bottle slot. I fumble my hands through the test, while my poor legs struggle to remain coordinated. Damn it. 73 mg/dl. This is not good. If I want this work out to continue, I best act fast. Legs still moving, I open the hammer gel pack I'd brought for just such an occasion. (READ MORE)

Things have been good these past couple of days. I have been working, working out, and overall my blood sugars seem to be pretty stable. Life is not too bad at the moment. Just as many of you, I have my good and bad days. I wanted to take the chance today to write about the good. Work is, well, work. At times it plays havoc with my sugar and it can be very stressful, but overall I am satisfied. At the end of the day or the end of the work week life gets instantly better. As soon as I walk out the door and I'm on my way to doing something non-work related, the problems I had disappear. Which leads me to my ultimate stress relief time - my workouts.

Last night after a grueling workout with my best friend in The Slimmons Gym I was spent. My buddy Matt and I get together a few nights a week to exercise in my garage. We have a treadmill, heavy bag, speed bag, and a weight bench in there so I let Matt decide what exercises we are going to do and how many.
This has always worked out well since my only exercise of late has been Wii bowling. Matt used to play football in high school and was often found in his school workout room strapped to some machine. Basically Matt would have hated me in high school since I was all about band. We said the football game was the opening act for our half time show! How I do miss band. (READ MORE)
