Coffea Arabica, cup o'joe, java, brew, jamocha, mud, caffiene, cafe au lait, espresso, cappachino, latte, breve - you name it - I LOVE it. They CANNOT have my coffee!
It used to be that coffee lowered your risk of type 2 diabetes. Go ahead and get hooked on it, but once you get that diagnosis, now you gotta go cold turkey.
I'm sure you've seen the news to which I'm referring. It's also here. (READ MORE)

The baby woke up at 4:45 this am, feverish and hungry. She had four shots at her 4-month well-baby check yesterday so this was to be expected. I dosed her with baby analgesic and fed her and by then, it was past time for me to be up and about.
Last night I didn't do any of my morning prep work. Usually I try to shower, pack my food, maybe set up the coffee maker and make sure my meds are all set up in my weekly pill box. (I have TWO seven-compartment weekly pill boxes - just like an eighty-year-old). Maybe pick out my clothes. You know, all that stuff that you can do ahead of time to make the morning less stressful. I didn't do any so I could watch Kitchen Nightmares with my husband. (READ MORE)

If I could do one thing the next 3 weeks, it would be a vacation from my type 2 diabetes, weight issues and actually, my health entirely. Even one day seems like it would be divine.
Warning - "food fantasies" follow.
I would eat pastries for breakfast, and have another one or two for a morning coffee break (I do love me some carbs). Perhaps a nice Eggs Benedict. And oh, yes, I would have pumpkin spice lattes until I shook from the caffiene.
I would eat homemade cream of mushroom soup for lunch, or a nice lobster bisque, full of heavy cream. Then I would take a nap, just because I wanted one, not because my blood glucose was at 200.
Homemade cookies with full-sugar cocoa and lots of marshmallows for afternoon snack. (READ MORE)

Imagine for a moment that I found a magic bottle with a a genie who popped out and offered me ten diabetes-related wishes (because I'm swell and clearly deserve more than three). Of course I wouldn't be allowed to just wish away my diabetes altogether. (It's the small print that gets you every time). I might ask the Beedies Genie for the following:
-- Hallucinogenic metformin.
-- A couch with special cushions that will make my body burn calories while I sit on my butt and watch Battlestar Galactica.
-- A super smart version of phentermine that can fool the body for longer than three months.
-- A line of Converse diabetic Chuck Taylors-- For that matter, any diabetic shoes that are both affordable and don't look like they were designed either for Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein or the whole cast of Cocoon.
-- Mandarin Orange Propell at every beverage fountain. (READ MORE)

These changes I wrote about recentlyare going pretty well. I'm choosing better foods to eat, only having human sized portions, and even cutting back on the soda.
I cannot believe I just typed that.
Soda. Diet soda is a vice I am not ready to give up entirely. I love soda in almost any flavor as long as it's diet odds are I'll like it.
But I drink a lot of soda. Way too much to be honest. And although diet soda doesn't seem to affect my blood glucose levels, the salt in it is not good.

Are you hooked on caffeine drinks? They are everywhere! Caffeine is littered throughout cups of coffee, doubled up in cans of energy drinks, and even spilling from D-friendly diet sodas, making it hard to get away from. Maybe this is why so many adults, and teenagers, consume the stuff at a heart-pounding rate. But have you noticed the impact on your blood glucose numbers like I have? It can spike my numbers wicked fast if I am not on top of things. Sure doesn't make my employment at Starbucks any easier, the stuff is diffused into my veins with every breath I take!

For years I was a smoker. I smoked a pack a day at the very least for 15 years. Addiction is powerful.
I finally kicked that habit but realized that nicotine is not the only drug I am addicted to. The other is much easier to get and I am not sure I want to quit it yet.
