This morning, I had (literally) the toughest workout of my life. I joined a program called Strikingly Fit - a six week fitness and weight loss program - at a women's boxing gym. Today's workout was called "12 rounds." 12 four minute rounds of tough exercise. Running, jumping rope, lateral movement with squats, sit ups, push ups, planks, punching. It was awesome. And I feel incredibly strong having completed it.

The holidays are just as good as any day to get some movement in. Researchers say that the average person gains 7 pounds between Thanksgiving and the New Year. If that's not incentive enough to get out and take a walk or do some activities, THEN I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS! We all know how we can get carried away on Thanksgiving and Christmas with shoving food down our throats. I am just as guilty as the next person. I sit around and eat, watch movies, or play board games. I also know that with family around there can be additional stress. What better way to remove some of that stress than with some boxing or aerobics?

One of the side effects of not being able to get down to Virginia for Christmas this year was that of not having to drive back during, or in the aftermath of, the Boxing Day Blizzard that blanketed the Northeast. We ran errands early on Sunday to make sure we had enough food (and other staples) in the house to last a few days, then settled in for the duration.

Everyone needs to take a personal day every now and then. At least that's how I feel. Lately, It seems like I have been running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I have been putting in some long days of landscaping work, I just returned from a weekend trip to Omaha, and my girlfriend is in the process of getting a job back in her home state. And needless to say, all of the chaos and daily schedule changes have my blood sugars going a little crazy. (READ MORE)

Good news. Bad news. Ain't that the way it always goes?
Good news. On Monday, I received my Mini-Link CGM from Minimed. Thanks to a blessing from people who don't even really know me. Cool, right?
It's been pretty fantastic to be able to see my bloodsugars in real time. I've had no problems with calibration and I've been consistently within 5-15 mg/dl points of the CGM for each meter reading. The swings I've been having are easier to catch before they happen and I haven't had even one low or extreme high since I hooked up on Monday. Even with three boxing classes this week - tough 900 calorie burning - hour plus work outs. And I've stayed in range throughout every one of them, since I've known my bloodsugar and the direction it's headed in well in advance.
I honestly couldn't be more thankful.

Family. Health. Necessities.
We were all thankful for so much as we shared our turkey feast this year. We are spending the Thanksgiving weekend in Albuquerque New Mexico this year with my sisters and mother. Having to make a 13 hour drive made me thankful for low carb snacks and caffeine too.
The thing that stands out as I contemplate the meal last night was the laughter I heard and participated in. I laughed a lot. We brought up old memories of family events and funny stories. Joked about each others habits and quirks, and just laughed at my kids and my nieces being silly. It was a lot of fun and so comforting.
One of the few qualities I have is the ability to make people laugh. I love to poke fun at myself, the world, and pretty much everything! I am also good about not being mean but just funny. All and all it was a very good time. (READ MORE)

I am finally fully moved in to my new place in Providence on Federal Hill. Much to my surprise, the changes in my life over the past 6 months have left me feeling one thing. Peace.
I really am happier than I have been in a very long time. More than that, I’m learning and relearning many things about myself, others, and the way I navigate the world.

This Saturday will mark my fourth week of boxing training. I'm pretty pleased with my progress. I've been running 4-5 days a week for 40 minutes. I'm getting faster, and stronger with my runs, pushing myself harder and harder. I also take 3 60-90 minute classes a week, primarily kickboxing classes. My power is growing by the day, even though I'm shrinking. I've lost 8 pounds since January 1st. But moreover, my muscular definition is changing for the better. I feel excellent.
I've pumped up my eating a bit, going from 1,400 to 1,600 calories a day and consuming more protein.

When I look back at 2007, I realize that a lot happened and that I learned a great deal about many things. First and foremost, I am happy to say that it is another year completed and another successful year behind me in the books. To say that and to think about that feels great. Every day that goes by a person living with diabetes learns something new about their disease. I can look back and recall different situations where my blood sugar got low. I remember certain times when I checked my glucose and it was off the charts high. Everything that has happened this year will be a learning experience that I can come back to in the future. I learned about myself and how different things affect me. I can recall specific weeks where everything was hunky dory and others where I felt I was going to lose it. Just living and learning each day adds more notches to my diabetic belt, a belt that I will always have. (READ MORE)

In my last post, I mentioned that I would be wearing some Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems (CGMS) and deciding if any were right for me.
I tried both the DexCom and the Navigator. My decision was this: there is simply no way a separate device is going to work for me. This was proven by the HOURS worth of dead zones - where I'd accidentally left the device behind. Further evidence, the fact that I regularly leave my cellphone behind when I leave my house in the morning - and that since childhood I've been known as someone who "would lose their head if it weren't tied on." Really, I think I'd lose my pump if that weren't tied on!
So, I am starting the process of trying to get a Minimed Real-Time System. I've got new insurance with my new job- so the pump part shouldn't be too great a struggle. But the CGM to go along with it is a different story.
