"So what should we take with us in the RV," I asked No. 3 as I drove her to the sitter one day last week.

 

"Um, cereawl and hot dogs and... um... oh! your blood sugar."

 

"Yes, my blood sugar supplies," I said almost as if I had forgotten.

 

"And skeetles and juice for you," she said.

 

"Yes, in case I go low. You're right." Such a good caregiver.

 

I forgot so many things packing for the RV trip, but insulin, pump supplies, test strips and alcohol swabs were not one of them. I was surprised, actually.

It's bad enough to get sick-any kind of sick-but add diabetes into the mix and you can have a real problem on your hands.
I've been sick only a handful of times since I was diagnosed. And when I say sick, I mean the kind of sick that keeps you from eating and leaves you laid up in bed for a couple days. It wasn't long after I was diagnosed that one of the kids got sick and I kept wondering when it would hit me. And then I realized that I literally didn't know what to do with myself if I did get sick. I didn't know what to expect from my blood sugar or how to manage it. (READ MORE)

Sick days are usually rough when you're trying to manage blood sugars. Whether it's a cold or a stomach bug, the stress, medicine, and unusual food intake can really wreak havoc on controlling levels.

 

Satuday morning, I came down with a stomach virus. This is the second one I've had this year, so I feel like I'm an expert at managing blood sugars when I can't keep anything down for hours.

 

I don't really keep an active sick day plan. I usually just make changes as needed. Being on the pump has made being sick so much easier since I can decrease or increase basals as necessary and prolong boluses just in case I can't keep food down.

The other night my wife, kids, and I went over to my sister's house for dinner.


Upon arriving we realized we had forgotten a crucial ingredient for the dish my wife was bringing. (Cheese-if you are wondering!)


My wife and I took a quick trip to local grocery store to pick up the cheese and possible get something for dessert. This was not the original plan but it seemed like a good idea to me!


We went into the store and quickly found the cheese she needed.


"Alright, let's go," my wife said assuming we were done!


"Um, I was thinking we should get dessert." I said it with that smile she cannot resist or at least, she makes me think so.


"Alright, what do you want?"


And this is when I freeze up. I have no clue what to get.


"Maybe just some cookies. That sounds good."

"What's the best diabetes advice you've ever been given," Kerri asked the other day.

 

As a health writer, one of the perks of my job is that I get to talk to experts. One of the questions I often ask is, "What is the best advice you'd give someone with diabetes?"

 

And of all the interviews I have done, I think the best response came from Linda Dale, RN, CDE, Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Outpatient Diabetes Eduction Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Diabetes Center. The article was about testing your blood sugar.

Baby’s Firsts

 

The first time you ...

 

held a bottle - 8 months

 

turned over - 4 months

 

crawled - 8 months

 

wore shoes - 10 months

 

sat unsupported - 7 months

 

stood up - 9 months

 

took first step alone - 13 months

 

tested your own blood sugar - 90 months

 

When you’re waiting anxiously for your baby to begin crawling or walking or become potty trained, it often seems as if it will just never happen. I've joked about Ben throwing his hairy legs in the air and demanding a diaper change at age 17, lest he be late for graduation. (For the record, we're finally making progress on that front).

In this post I will rant and rave in a way I don’t think I ever have about something that when I look back at this post in about 20 minutes may see incredibly trivial. Or not.
 

Seriously, what is the logic behind checking my blood sugar at the endocrinologists office? Not *me* checking my sugar, but the nurse checking it during the course of blood pressure, weight, pulse, etc.
 

I mean really, for them it’s a totally random time to check someone’s sugar. They never ask when I ate last or when I last bolused. What is the reason for this?

You know that internal motivational speaker that I called on the other day? That guy is one mean motha... ahem.

 

Anyway. I have to endure a speech from that Hell Raiser just about every morning: No, you can't slow down yet... yes, you can make it to the next light pole... deal with the pain, it's good for you... that guy you see running every morning can do this, so can you.

 

So, the walking routine has been going good. I often really hate it while I'm doing it, which is a feeling I thought would have passed by now because for the most part I really do enjoy the walking. And I'm definitely enjoying what it's doing for my blood sugar management.

I recently made a resolution. I challenged myself to up the ante on my daily blood glucose testing routine. Seeing some vast holes in my finger stick line graphs, I knew I was due for a kick-start. It started off with a flurry of finger lances and a rapidly growing discard pile of test strips. Since then, it has mellowed out ever so slightly, to a more maintainable pace.
200 test strips per month is what my health insurance allows me. That gives me seven strips a day to use as I will. Give or take a few, for you math whizzes out there.
To keep myself organized, I mentally plotted my daily testing agenda. A mental list keeps me accountable, and honestly, keeps me from forgetting.
Here's how the test strips break down:
1. First thing in the morning. Dawn phenomenon?-only one way to know. A.K.A. should I hold the OJ this morning?
2. Ninety minutes after breakfast. Needed that granola bar after all! (READ MORE)

I think one of the things I hate most about my diabetes is that I never seem to follow any patterns. It seems like other people have these stable highs and lows, where it's so much easier to adjust basals or carb intake. But me...my body has a freaking mind of its own!

 

Before bed last night, my blood sugar was at 159. For me, I'm very comfortable with that number right before bed. It says that I won't wake up too high, but I probably won't drop in the middle of the night either. But I'd just jumped from 103 to 159 after a post-low snack (you know, the snack you eat after you've had the juice about an hour before). So I decided to bolus anyway.

 

About 4:30am, I woke up with a panic in my gut and a clammy feeling washing over my skin. The CGMS beeped at me LOW! I know! I tested. Sure enough, 60. I treated with 15 grams of orange juice and about 15 grams in graham crackers. Then I went back to sleep.
