I'm currently on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, which is a low estrogen triphasic birth control. I picked this one years ago because it was low estrogen and had the same progestin that's known to decrease acne. Plus it comes in a pretty nifty diskette...mine has a flower on it in fact. I only stayed on it for six months back then though because it wasn't really helping with the cramping that I was having. Nor did my acne seem to improve.

 

I went back on it a few months ago because of the Accutane regimen that requires birth control use. It seemed the safest option after Seasonique left me with 21 days of breakthrough bleeding. This is my second completed pack. And I think I'm beginning to see a pattern with my blood sugars.

A stayed with me for what seemed like forever, but was probably 10ish minutes. The kids' doctor, Dr. N, came in and stayed with me just as long. V was in and out offering help where she could.

 

A gave me SweeTarts. Then juice. We all talked about my pump and diabetes and Dex. We all watched the line on Dex continue to go low. And I kept saying this isn't about my blood sugar. I've never felt faint from a low before and I didn't have any of my other tell-tale low signs.

 

Dr. N asked if I had had diarrhea lately. Well, actually yes, I told her. She speculated that I was fighting something off. It started to make sense. I mean, I shot up to 300 practically without notice and in what seemed like a matter of minutes.

ADM logoIt's my time...to have the best of both worlds.

The last week has been filled with high numbers. Consistent results in the 300's. Morning numbers in the 170's and higher. Only two lows, brought on by extensive Humalog use. 217 is not a pleasant average to look at.

 

I'm positive that I know exactly why these numbers are all so high. Which frustrates me (the reason, not the knowing). A bad mix of birth control pills and Accutane. Both have side effects like high blood sugar or blood sugar changes.

 

I'd definitely say these were high and definitely changed. And I'm very annoyed. I've raised my Lantus to 31 units in the evening, which has brought lower numbers for today. So I'll leave it at 31 units for the next day or two in order to see how it's working long term.

The problem with living with diabetes 24/7 is that you forget the details of the disease. It becomes like breathing or eating. You only remember the major moments...the great food you enjoyed or the time you got pulled under by a wave and struggled for the surface and air.

 

And that's exactly how diabetes is for me. After sixteen plus years of this disease, I can't remember the finger pricks or the insulin shots or any of the in between. It just zooms past my memory because I don't find a need to remember these minute issues (and my brain would constantly be on overload if I tried to remember 6+ finger pricks a day for the past sixteen years).

 

But today, I'm finding the need to remember these issues. Since I'm back on MDI's for the time being, I've been submerged into the life of insulin injections and many more finger checks. The ups and downs of diabetes are now important. The details are important.

Despite a random weekend of highs, my averages are down from their 165 perch from the past month. My current 31-day average is 156 (weekend highs and all). And I'm celebrating those inverted numbers.

 

The added activity from classes has definitely lowered some of my numbers. I've had a fair amount of lows, although nothing that seems too out of the ordinary for being in control. Some are after walking to class; others are late at night after the activity of the day catches up with me.

A coworker asked me if I knew of a cake mix that was sugar free. She was asked to bake a cake for a friend who has diabetes.

 

That began the carbohydrate lesson.

 

"The thing is, although something may say 'Sugar Free' or 'Reduced Sugar' it may still have carbs in it which is what effects blood sugar. Sugar is included in that number." I did my best to not get too technical.

 

"Well I bought this one to try but I thought I would check with you to see if you knew of a better one," she said.

Since getting my hands on a review copy of Jenny Ruhl's new book, "Blood Sugar 101: What they don't tell you about diabetes" (Technion Books), I haven't been able to put it down.
Finally, an intellegent book about type 2 diabetes that tells it like it is and offers practical advice without talking down to me or engaging in quackery. Reading it, I feel like I did when met best friend Sue in middle school or when first found Diabetic Mommy. There's someone else who gets it! (READ MORE)

Saturday was one of those random days for my diabetes. I have been thinking about it and I have come up with a few ideas about why my sugars were off. For one thing, it's the weekend and I ALWAYS seem to have difficulty keeping things on track. I am sure that all of you out there can relate to this. Saturday and Sunday come around and sleeping patterns go out the window! All throughout the work week, I get up about the same time each morning; eat the same size breakfast and then go through my typical work day. Well, then the weekend gets here, and I am eating at completely different times and having irregular meals. And when it comes to physical activity on the weekend, I am either extremely lazy or working exceedingly hard. (READ MORE)

Recently, my mom and I were talking about our eating habits. When she was a teacher, she said, there were typically goodies in the teacher's lounge. Every carb-heavy, sugar-filled concoction you could imagine. From donuts to stolens to cookies and cakes. She said if she could just hold out until the kids left for the day, she felt pretty good about making it home without touching anything. If she happened to grab one of those treats first thing in the morning, though, she was extra super diligent for the rest of the day, she said.
"Oh, man! Not me!" I said. The earlier I cheat, the more likely I am to be bad for the rest of the day. She was shocked at my admission. (READ MORE)
