It's been a bit busy this week, leaving me somewhat late on reporting back on Saturday's d-group meeting to see Breakthrough: The Dramatic Story of the Discovery of Insulin, a special exhibit showing at the New York Historical Society. Since I had to work Sunday, this ended up as the total of my World Diabetes Day celebrations this year.

Last week I posted about my Insurance company giving me a scare about approving my insulin pump supplies.
Well, using a Minimed insulin pump in Southern California has its advantages since their products are shipped out of Northridge which is about 30 minutes from my house. Almost in my backyard! So my order which was sent via UPS 3-day select arrived at the Simmons house the very next day!
This made my stress level drop tremendously which we all know is good for the diabetes.
So that covers the first part of this post title. Now to the blogging.
I mentioned this insurance situation on my personal blog, where I often rant about my ups and downs with diabetes, and the coolest thing happened. (READ MORE)

As a part of Diabetes Awareness Month, today is apparently D-Blog Day. On this day in 1944, diabetes bloggers stormed the beach at Normandy and made the world safe for democracy. Or something like that; I should go look it up.

Anyway, to commemorate the occasion, diabetes bloggers have been asked to unite on a single topic. This year, that topic is "Six things you want people to know about diabetes". So here we go.

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of hanging out with three of the lovely ladies of the OC (the diabetes Online Community) - Kerri, Shannon and Nicole. We went to a great play at the Trinity Repertory Theatre, in Providence, RI, called Some Things Are Private. It discussed Sally Mann and the photographs she had taken of her children over the years. I guess technically, I joined the diabetes online community back in October, 2005 when I joined dLife, and I became active in the overall DOC some time in 2008 -- but it wasn't until this year that I, and others, had the opportunity to "eyeball" the folk we'd been e-mailing, blogging to, commenting blog posts from, tweeting, and otherwise conversing with on various diabetes-related forums and social networks. 2009 is also the year dLife launched the dLife Community, and the year I started blogging here at Blogabetes.

Some of my year's highlights include:

Back in February 2008, I started blogging for dLife. I'd written my own blogs before, but only on things like Xanga or Blogger or Facebook. It was never something that I could tally hundreds of people reading. And it certainly wasn't something visited by the very specialists themselves (by specialists, I mean each and every diabetic reading these posts).

When I first started, I thought I'd do fine. After all, I was a natural born writer. I loved to write. And diabetes seemed like an easy topic. But over the first months, I realized how hard it can be to put my diabetes life out there.

Like the old ad for Skittles (chewy fruit-flavored candies), diabetes bloggers come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors. [OK, all Skittles are square, but that's not the point.] Right here on Blogabetes, we range from parents of children with Type 1 diabetes (Carey, Julia), people who have lived most of their lives with type 1 diabetes (Nicole, Lindsey), people who were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as adults (Michelle), and people with type 2 diabetes (myself, Mike). One of the participants at my recent talk on Connected Medical Devices was concerned that transmitting our medical data to our doctors via e-mail (an unsecure platform) or sharing it in crowdsourced applications (such as TuAnalyze) might be in violation of HIPAA regulations. The thing about HIPAA is that it restricts your healthcare providers from disclosing your health information without your consent (or a legal mandate of some sorts); it doesn't restrict you from sharing the health data you have collected yourself (or received from your healthcare providers).
