When I pre-registered for the Tour de Cure, the organizer asked me if I'd like to say a few words before setting out. It's apparently the tradition to ask a Red Rider to "rally the troops", as it were, and she offered me the honor since it would be my birthday -- unless, of course, I was too shy to speak.
I may be a number of things, but shy about public speaking is not one of them. Give me a microphone and and audience, and I'll ramble on until someone comes with the big hook to pull me offstage. However, trying to figure out what to say might be challenging.

On June 13, 2010 at approximately 12:54 PM Eastern Daylight time, I rode through the "finish" arch at Verizon headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, completing my first-ever Tour de Cure.
It was hard -- about as hard as I thought it would be, and harder than I'd been prepared to handle. At the same time, it was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had.

Turning 21 has been the biggest birthday that I've had in quite awhile. I've been celebrating for the past three days with family and friends. For a birthday that really doesn't mean much to me. Yet somehow, I've turned it into a major event.
Being 21 feels better, just because it feels less like I'm still a kid and more like I'm an adult. Telling people I'm 21 instead of 20 will definitely be nice, I'm sure. But otherwise, this birthday and those numbers don't mean much to me.
Because I've generally decided that I won't drink. So being legal for alcohol isn't that exciting. (However, being legal for Las Vegas casinos is!)

Canada and the United States of America both celebrate their "birthdays" on this long weekend. Flags are flown, fireworks launched, parades marched, and we perceive a sort of unity and interallegiance to our governments and our fellow citizens. While the United States celebrates it's independence from England, we also understand the various states' interdependence upon each other in matters of commerce, transportation, and national defense. It would seem to me that the Canadian provinces are similarly interdependent upon each other.

Charlie turns 7 tomorrow. Can you believe it? 7!
"So where do you want to go out to eat for your birthday?" I asked him last night.
"Surprise me," he answered.
"But make sure it's a place where all the waiters sing Happy Birthday to me," he added.
It's funny that he wants that. That sort of public revelry would be hell on Earth for Susanne or me if we were the intended target.
He looked puzzled.
"But how will they know it's my birthday? Do all of the restaurants have a big list of all the kids' birthdays?"
"No," I said. "The restaurants don't have Santa-type power. Mom or dad will tell the waiter or waitress that it's your birthday."

I spent the last five days in Charleston, South Carolina with my mom, grandmother, and cousin celebrating birthdays, life, and good news. We had an amazing trip filled with lots of seafood, sight-seeing, and girl talk. I haven't been able to spend that much time with my mom or my family in awhile and it was much needed.
But travel these days isn't all it's cracked up to be. We've always been a family that traveled so I remember days when you could carry on gallons of shampoo and nobody cared. I remember when you walked through a metal detector and people barely noticed you. Post 9/11 has changed travel though. And recent years have brought about even higher security in airports.

There's a song or a saying that says something along the lines of parents feeling the lives of their children go by so fast, while children feel their lives go so slow. They can't wait to be at different milestones and time just seems to crawl. I remember that. 16, 18, 21 were huge milestones. High school graduation, college, marriage and I couldn't wait to have babies. Now, birthdays are no big deal to me.
Life is going so fast for my children. I got an email today that a representative from the junior high came to talk to all the sixth graders about registering for next year. JUNIOR HIGH people! My baby -- No. 1 -- is growing so fast. And junior high is only two years. In a blink he'll be in high school.

I am so very fortunate.
I am surrounded by people who care about me, and who understand my diabetes. I have family, friends, co-workers, and online cheerleaders (like you!) who "get" diabetes, who understand the physical and emotional challenges, and who are willing to help me manage under what are often difficult circumstances.
This is no small thing.

So, hi. I haven't been around for a bit. No excuses, really, other than life getting in the way.
Well, life and a bit of embarrassment thrown in for good measure. You see, I've fallen off the logging wagon.
I know why. We had to move and I packed up the computer that had the log sheet program on it. For a couple of weeks, while all of our stuff was in boxes, I just didn't log. And I rarely looked at Olivia's pump or meter, either. I'd ask her every day how she was doing, but other than that, nothing.
When I would go over her numbers, I could find no pattern to her highs and lows. Nothing was jumping out at me and it was frustrating and unfortunately, I stuck my head in the sand over it.
