Throughout my diabetes life, I've developed some bad habits. I'm a perfectionist and hate having them linger over my diabetes. I've decided that I need to break these bad habits if I truly want to excel on my pump and in life. I'm at a point where I realize all the great things I'm looking forward to: establishing a career, starting a family, building my dream home. I don't want to miss one second of my future because I made poor decisions with my diabetes. So I'm challenging myself to make a list of the five habits of my diabetes life and work on curbing each one: (READ MORE)

Which would you like to hear first? I guess I'll start with the bad news and get my whining out of the way first. The scale is up this week. Granted it's only half a pound, but the frustrating part is I have been working so hard at this. I've been following Weight Watchers faithfully since Thanksgiving and I've only lost about 2 and a half pounds. What's worse is I'm starting to begrudge people at the meeting who lose more than that each week. Selfish, isn't it?
In reviewing my diet, exercise and lifestyle, I'm even more annoyed because I'm eating less food (and healthier food, at that), exercising more, drinking water and even getting more sleep than I had been. But I'm still not losing. What do I need to do? I'm open to all suggestions, except "be patient." I don't do well with patience. (READ MORE)

For the past few years, I've gotten into the bad diabetes habit of skipping boluses. Not food boluses. But blood sugar boluses. I have the habit of foregoing boluses when my blood sugar is 160 and under. I'll see a 140 or 155 and skip the bolus instead of bringing it down to 100. But above 160, I'm good about bolusing to bring the number down (something about those 180s and 200s scare me into submission).
I know that this extremely bad habit leaves my averages a little higher than they should be. And I'm not sure exactly why I do this...maybe over the years, a 150 doesn't seem so bad. Maybe I just get tired of so many injections a day so I leave off the "unnecessary" ones. Maybe it's some habit that I started in my childhood.

It’s not every day that one of your favorite bands plays a private show in your friend’s back yard. And it’s not every day that your daughter introduces them and they sing happy birthday to your son in their fantastically thick Scottish accents.
It’s also not every day that Charlie’s blood sugar stays in the 400s for hours. This, of course, was such a day. Diabetes certainly has knack for pooping on a parade.
It’s the good with the bad, I suppose. The good, the bad and the ugly. The ugly being the bruise that remains as a reminder. One moment of pure melodic pleasure coming from the band and then a glance over at Charlie, who clearly wasn’t looking like himself. More quiet than usual. His face colorless with a hint of discomfort as if the sun were in his eyes.

Surely, I thought when Toohey beeped at me mid-morning, it was one of those random beeps that I couldn't explain. Maybe even a no-delivery message.
"LOW RESERVOIR" was not what I wanted to see. With my new job in a new city, my commute is no longer just four blocks. Now I'm an hour away from home. I can't just scoot out for a few minutes if I forget something.
I scrolled down; 7 units would barely get me through lunch. I kicked myself because this morning before I left for work I checked how many units I had and knew I wouldn't be able to make it through the day. I made a note to stick a reservoir and a bottle of Novolog in my purse so I could make the change this morning when I ran out.
Clearly, I forgot.

Good news. Bad news. Ain't that the way it always goes?
Good news. On Monday, I received my Mini-Link CGM from Minimed. Thanks to a blessing from people who don't even really know me. Cool, right?
It's been pretty fantastic to be able to see my bloodsugars in real time. I've had no problems with calibration and I've been consistently within 5-15 mg/dl points of the CGM for each meter reading. The swings I've been having are easier to catch before they happen and I haven't had even one low or extreme high since I hooked up on Monday. Even with three boxing classes this week - tough 900 calorie burning - hour plus work outs. And I've stayed in range throughout every one of them, since I've known my bloodsugar and the direction it's headed in well in advance.
I honestly couldn't be more thankful.

I'm putting on several layers of body armor for this post. I suspect some of you will be more than angry at me for saying this: Maybe we should give Halle Berry a break.
::Michelle ducks::
Here's my reason. She's clearly misinformed about either her disease or diabetes in general or both. Instead of attacking her, let's take this opportunity to bring to light the common misconceptions about diabetes, let's offer education to those who don't know or have been afraid to ask, and let's also encourage people who have diabetes to be as informed as possible about the disease and the best treatment options. Friday morning, I packed up my bags to head to the lake for the weekend. I had a long drive ahead of me, so I made sure to bring extra juice, keep my meter handy, and lots of water. I stopped for lunch on the way.
I checked my blood sugar. 264 (up from 102 at breakfast). Unexpected, considering all I had for breakfast was water and eggs. Nothing that should send my blood sugar spiraling. So I bolused for the blood sugar, bolused for lunch, and enjoyed my quick meal before hitting the Texas highway.

I'm finally getting around to catching up on my reading. In October, Diabetes Care reported that for some people with diabetes, the care is worse than the illness itself. You can read about it here.
Apparently, almost 20 percent of those surveyed said they'd rather die 8 to 10 years early and avoid treatments.
Not me. I'd rather have pinpricks in my fingers and needles in my belly, and keep my eyes, legs and kidneys in working order. Sure, it would be better to not have diabetes, but these are the cards I've been dealt and I'm just gonna have to deal with it. (READ MORE)

I don't think I've ever been more undecided about a health-care issue than I am right now.
To DexCom or not to DexCom?
Last week, I wrote that I was up in arms about my insurance company saying it wouldn't pay for the DexCom sensors because my policy doesn't have "disposable coverage" and that I was going to fight for the coverage. Today has been a pretty good day, and I've been thinking that I don't really need a CGMS.
I know, that's totally weird coming from someone who has been saying for months how beneficial the system would be to my life.
