Having been away for a weekend of fun since Friday morning, I feel like I've been living under a rock! Albeit a really fun rock, with a little alcohol, BBQ, and great music, but still a rock.
So, as I watched Barack Obama introduce his first Supreme Court appointment, Sonia Sotomayor, this morning, I was taken aback to discover that she has type 1 diabetes. That she was diagnosed at eight years old. That she's lived with type 1 for 46 years.
How incredibly inspiring for people with diabetes. Even more inspiring, I would imagine, for those raising children with type 1.

I thought for sure I was going to be late.
I got in my car at 7:20 - I'd have enough time to make it into Providence for my 8:00 appointment with the doc - with time to spare. But there was traffic. A lot of it.

According to the dLife style guide my editor sent me, "diabetic" is used as an adjective for describing conditions, supplies, and other things related to the disease. It is not used describe a person.
Yes, it's really underlined in the style guide-that's how serious my editor is about it! The preferred term is "person with diabetes" or "living with diabetes." Never use the term "diabetes sufferers."
As a writer who has spent the past decade working in print media, where word counts are the law of the land, I haven't been able to grasp the concept of using three words in place of one. (READ MORE)

I am overdue on blood work. There is lab paperwork that I have been carrying around for months in my bag. It was given to me by my endo back in September so I could get blood drawn in December and make an appointment to see him. Yeah, that has not happened.
December is a busy time for everyone and frankly I just did not make the time to do it. So I figured I would call, make an appointment, and then hit the lab to give them my blood. It usually takes a week to get lab results so I make sure I have my dates set when I make the appointment. It sucks to go to the doctors and have nothing to really talk about. (READ MORE)

I'm finally getting around to catching up on my reading. In October, Diabetes Care reported that for some people with diabetes, the care is worse than the illness itself. You can read about it here.
Apparently, almost 20 percent of those surveyed said they'd rather die 8 to 10 years early and avoid treatments.
Not me. I'd rather have pinpricks in my fingers and needles in my belly, and keep my eyes, legs and kidneys in working order. Sure, it would be better to not have diabetes, but these are the cards I've been dealt and I'm just gonna have to deal with it. (READ MORE)

Friday's endo appointment was a solo affair. Susanne stayed home with my little one who had suddenly come down with a fever. I don't like going solo. I like having Susanne there with me for these visits. We're a good team. We help finish each other's sentences. Also, you never know if an endo or a CDE is going to get a little nutty with the accusatory tones, etc. so, it's nice to know someone's got your back.
And if a knife fight broke out, I'd want Susanne there so that I could hide behind her.
The ride into Philadelphia went as usual. I got really lost, got stuck in awful traffic and made it to our appointment about an hour late. It doesn't take much for me to get lost in Philadelphia. I still don't know the city very well. This time, a detour did me in. I gave Charlie my camera and he documented the car ride.

I thought seriously about postponing my endo appointment scheduled for this morning. I hadn’t seen the doc since August, when my A1C was 7.6. I didn’t think I was doing any better than I had been doing in August. In fact, I was pretty sure I was doing worse.
Thanks to some pretty crappy eating habits, some stress and dealing with worn out pump sites, I suspected my A1C was going to be ridiculously high. I even imagined myself telling the nurse to not tell me the number, to just write it down and let me look at it when I was ready. And then I realized that was stupid because how is the doc going to help me if we don’t talk specifically about what my A1C is.

So, as predicted, my blood sugar was lowish most of Friday morning. In fact, I believe my fasting was under 90, so I had to eat a granola bar before going for my walk. I stayed under 100 until lunch time.
It was totally crazy. Thank you stress and nerves!
I knew I'd need some complex carbs to get me through the afternoon without going low. So I went for my favorite soft pretzel spot for lunch. So, so yummy. And so, so rough on my blood sugar. I can usually count on hanging out in the 200s for about five or six hours no matter what I do when I have one of those pretzels.
Just before leaving for the doctor's office, I checked my sugar and was around 240. I really hadn't wanted to be that high, but was slightly comforted knowing that I wouldn't go low during the procedure.

I got a call this morning saying that my appointment with the new endocrinologist next week had to be rescheduled. So I called into the appointments line of the clinic asking for her next available, only to be told that it wasn't until June 10th at the earliest. Three weeks away doesn't sound so bad...except that I can't have any appointments from June 1st to July 6th because of summer school.

1. Well, my new physician’s assistant. I don’t actually see my endo, just the PA.
2. My old PA moved on to hospital management.
3. When my new PA made me wait 15 minutes before coming into the patient room I got pretty aggravated. My old PA was in the room within 5 minutes.
4. We talked for a long time. Actually, she talked and I listened and answered questions. Since we are new to each other she was information gathering, which is fine. But it can be kind of a pain in the ass to go through your medical history all the time.
