I'm finally getting around to catching up on my reading. In October, Diabetes Care reported that for some people with diabetes, the care is worse than the illness itself. You can read about it here.
Apparently, almost 20 percent of those surveyed said they'd rather die 8 to 10 years early and avoid treatments.
Not me. I'd rather have pinpricks in my fingers and needles in my belly, and keep my eyes, legs and kidneys in working order. Sure, it would be better to not have diabetes, but these are the cards I've been dealt and I'm just gonna have to deal with it. (READ MORE)

I am overdue on blood work. There is lab paperwork that I have been carrying around for months in my bag. It was given to me by my endo back in September so I could get blood drawn in December and make an appointment to see him. Yeah, that has not happened.
December is a busy time for everyone and frankly I just did not make the time to do it. So I figured I would call, make an appointment, and then hit the lab to give them my blood. It usually takes a week to get lab results so I make sure I have my dates set when I make the appointment. It sucks to go to the doctors and have nothing to really talk about. (READ MORE)

See that cat, he's jumping for joy - in spite of early-morning stressors...
I thought for sure I was going to be late.
I got in my car at 7:20 - I'd have enough time to make it into Providence for my 8:00 appointment with the doc - with time to spare. But there was traffic. A lot of it.
I was fairly certain my blood pressure would be through the roof when I finally arrived at the doctor's office 5 minutes late. (READ MORE)

According to the dLife style guide my editor sent me, "diabetic" is used as an adjective for describing conditions, supplies, and other things related to the disease. It is not used describe a person.
Yes, it's really underlined in the style guide-that's how serious my editor is about it! The preferred term is "person with diabetes" or "living with diabetes." Never use the term "diabetes sufferers."
As a writer who has spent the past decade working in print media, where word counts are the law of the land, I haven't been able to grasp the concept of using three words in place of one. (READ MORE)

Before I could get the green light to start a family, I had one last appointment to keep, the endocrinologist. I've been to specialists before, but I didn't realize what a challenge it would be to get a first appointment with an endo.
First off, my insurance only offers a small selection to choose from. Location is my main criteria for picking a doctor. Thankfully, the one closest to my home is affiliated with the hospital that's closest to my home. The good news: he's one of the best endos in the area. The bad news: getting an appointment with him is damn near impossible.
It didn't help my case that my control was classified as excellent. With an a1c well under 6, he's got plenty of higher priority patients on his caseload. But after much begging, I was able to secure an appointment for four months later. (READ MORE)

The scheduling nurse from the Mayo Clinic called today and said the doctors have agreed to see me. And get this: I have an appointment in two weeks. Yep, two weeks! They're not squeezing me in, they're not making exceptions. I have a regular appointment.

 

So, I'm sort of stuck between really excited and fairly skeptical. I've made it pretty clear that I have high expectations for my endocrinologist. So on one hand I feel like the Mayo Clinic is the best of the best and my expectations will be met and on the other hand I feel like these people are still doctors in one of the largest cities in the country and likely see a ton of patients and why will they treat me any differently than Dr. S did?

Twice this week I've literally said "Oh crap! That's this week? Once was for a birthday party for No. 1 and once was the realization that my next endo appointment is Tuesday.
I'm feeling rather confident going into this appointment. OK, actually I think I'm being a little too cocky. I sort of feel like my A1C is going to be the most amazing drop from a 9 that anyone has ever seen just because I've started walking more and the Novolog is really, really helping my numbers. And I know this because I'm actually testing more than once or twice a day. I need to sort of bring myself down to size, but I really doubt that will happen until I get the results of my A1C test.
In the time that I saw Dr. C last, I have started and stopped Byetta, developed terrible TERRIBLE seasonal allergies that a steroid shot didn't even touch, started nasal allergy medicines, found myself walking at least five days a week, and rather enjoying the control I seem to have taking Novolog. I’m mad.

 

It’s not even lunch time on the day of my appointment and already I’m looking for a new endo.

 

I’m mad. But mostly I think I’m homesick for Dr. C and his practice. I’m not sure I can put my thoughts together coherently, so you’re being subjected to my morning in bullet points.

 

• I don’t remember how I settled on this doctor, but it seems to me that his office was the closest one for a doctor whose credentials didn’t come from the University of Guatemala or University of the Phillipines.

 

• In the waiting room I sat. And sat. I sat too long considering my appointment was at 8 a.m. Once I got in a room I sat. And sat. I sat too long considering I barely had time to think about picking up a magazine at Dr. C’s office much less actually read several articles.

In googling my doctor the other day, I came across a website that lets you rate your doctors and leave specific comments. In reading my doctor's reviews, I had to laugh. Many were spot on. His punctuality rating was far below par. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, he averaged a measly 1.5 for punctuality. His staff also got very low ratings for helpfulness. If he wasn't such a great doctor, I doubt he'd be able to stay in business.
The primary complaint was the wait and his reputation in that department preceeds him. When I asked my primary care physician for a referal to see him, she laughed and told me to bring a good book, because I'd be waiting for quite some time. And it's true. A three-hour wait is standard, and that's just in the waiting room. Once you get into the back office, its usually another hour. (READ MORE)
