Tonight my wife and I will be attending my company holiday party. Now, I will start by saying I am pretty excited about the party this year since we are having it at the Queen Mary. I know my pocketbook would not normally allow for a night at a 5 start restaurant and then to also have a overnights stay in a legendary hotel aboard the ship is pretty exciting!
I am a little concerned about the indulging I will be doing this night. Like most guys, the term "open bar" is more like an "all you can drink challenge" especially if I know I do not have to drive anywhere. I hate what alcohol does to by blood sugar level. (READ MORE)

Last night, I was enjoying an episode of "Brothers & Sisters" after an exhausting weekend with Marvin at his childhood friend's wedding. Quite ironically, the character Paige (she's about 13 or 14) was at a party and was peer pressured by a "friend" to do some drinking. She also happens to be a diabetic on the show.
As her mother yells at her, grounds her, and generally freaks out about her teenage daughter getting drunk, she expresses an interesting comment. "At least she had the sense to take her insulin!" I wanted to punch the TV screen. Yes, we all should take our insulin even if we're consuming alcohol. However, the bigger implication here was that the alcohol might raise her blood sugar. A deadly misconception.

Last Friday afternoon, this was my Facebook status: "Salty Seniorita. Rum and Diet Coke. Love me a 2 p.m. Friday."
Fridays during the summer around here we get off at 2 p.m. It's a fantabulous job perk, especially when those "extra" two hours or so mean that you can sit at a bar with a friend and have a drink or two.
Several days later a friend posted this in response to my status: "Can diabetics drink?"
It's an innocent question that leads back to a myth that people with diabetes can't drink. At all. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind the myth is, but I suspect it's rooted in beer and fru-fru drinks like daquoris and margaritas and other drinks with sugary syrups and high and/or simple carbs.

This is World Diabetes Day, the first annual, and the international community is embracing its message by flying high the striking blue symbol of the disease. The message is about waking up the world to the growing impact of diabetes on our young and old- this year's theme focusing on children and adolescents. The innocent faces of the disease give a hammering reminder of what we are striving for, worldwide awareness, more scientific breakthroughs, and a much needed cure. (READ MORE)

Turning 21 has been the biggest birthday that I've had in quite awhile. I've been celebrating for the past three days with family and friends. For a birthday that really doesn't mean much to me. Yet somehow, I've turned it into a major event.
Being 21 feels better, just because it feels less like I'm still a kid and more like I'm an adult. Telling people I'm 21 instead of 20 will definitely be nice, I'm sure. But otherwise, this birthday and those numbers don't mean much to me.
Because I've generally decided that I won't drink. So being legal for alcohol isn't that exciting. (However, being legal for Las Vegas casinos is!)

After my work function last week, my mom and I met at a resort to spend some quality girl time together. It was much needed for both of us as we haven't been able to spend a lot of time just the two of us doing the things we love to do since I moved four hours away. We went shopping, ate a lot of good food, got massages, and talked non-stop over the weekend.
We also had a few drinks in celebration of our vacation. Neither my mother or I drink to get drunk. We like to enjoy a glass of wine or a margarita socially, which is what we did. The first night, I had a glass of white wine with my salmon salad. It was delicious and my mother didn't say much.

I just read about the tragic death of socialite Casey Johnson, daughter of New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune. She was just 30.
Before the details of her death unfolded, I just thought, how horrible. I knew nothing about Casey Johnson. I wondered why she died. Why the sudden spate of 30-something celebrity deaths. I thought about her father, Woody Johnson, whose football team just made it into the playoffs for the first time in three years. I thought about what must have been a horrendous emotional plummet from great exultation to unthinkable grief.
And then amongst the headlines reporting her death, I saw the word. Diabetes.
And of course I think of Charlie.

There's no such thing as a single "diabetes diet". -- Diabetes proverb.
One of the challenges in preparing food -- or treats -- for a group of people is accommodating everyone's likes, dislikes, and dietary restrictions. Sometimes this is straightforward -- a packaged salad with OU (U in a circle) markings will be acceptable to most observant Jews; similarly, a vegan-certified product will work for most types of vegetarians. Preparing the same food from scratch poses other issues. If all my ingredients are kosher pareve (non-dairy, non-meat) but I cook those ingredients in a pot that once held pork roast, that food is no longer acceptable as kosher -- it has been "contaminated" by whatever molecules of pork that might have remained in that pot (even after a thorough washing).

Diabetes has always entailed a lot of paraphernalia. Back in the day, meters were three times the size they are now. Bottles of strips weighed a ton. And syringes came with much longer needles. Plus there were juice boxes, snack packs, and rolls of candy. But even now, with all the advances in this modern day and age, diabetes comes with baggage (and I'm not talking the emotional kind).

It's New Year's Day and I'm contentedly sitting at home in my pajamas and watching I Love Lucy reruns. Last night was splendid and today, I just want to relish in gratitude for all that I've been given this year. 2010 was amazing and I'm so ready for the blessings of 2011.
Last night, Marvin and I went to see a comedy then went to a late dinner at a new local restaurant. The conversation was good, the company amazing, and the food was pretty good as well. I had redfish and potatoes with a glass of white wine. We went home and watched the disaster that is the New Year's Eve news coverage. Then at midnight, we popped the champagne and ate chocolate cake.
I slept in a little late this morning, did the dishes, and attempted to keep warm in the freezing temperatures of Texas (doesn't that seem hysterical?). Then I checked emails and read all the latest online posts. Next I booked a ticket for Las Vegas.
