I know, I know, I know. People with diabetes must exercise. People with diabetes must stay fit. This is especially true for those of us with Type 2.
And you know it. I know it. You know you know it. I know you know it. Who needs to tell you this?
Reuters and Dr. Ronald Sigal of University of Calgary and colleagues at the University of Ottawa, as announced in this article, do feel the need to tell us. Specifically, they're telling us that lifting weights and resistance exercise also helps to reduce blood sugars, just like aerobic exercise does. Aerobic exercise, that would be the sweaty kind.
This is good news.
This means that ANY and ALL exercise you do counts for good diabetes points. It all counts! I love this. (READ MORE)

My last endo appointment in May of this year brought lots of good news. An A1C of 6.0, a reduction in my total and bad cholesterol levels, kidney function excellent. Overall, I felt pretty good leaving the office. But there were issues to be addressed - aren't there always? First, although my cholesterol levels were reduced, they were still not where the doctor - and where I - would like to have them. Further, I'd gained 2lbs since my previous visit.
So, I set my mind to fixing these issues, while maintaining all of the good stuff that I'd managed to achieve and then I started making some changes. (READ MORE)

This weekend was a busy one.

 

We went to a party, a wedding, and a movie not to mention the typical disc golf game Saturday morning and church on Sunday.

 

Most of our weekends are jam packed with stuff and always right there at the very top of the pile is my diabetes. It is always right there on top of everything else. But this weekend was a little different.

 

Usually with all the running around and stuff going on my diabetes tends to get out of control on weekends. I tend to run high because of the bad food choices I make and end up spending the weekend correcting for many mistakes. But not this weekend.

Since gaining twenty extra pounds in 2006 (due to my insane hormones and PCOS diagnosis), I've had ups and downs in trying to get back to my high school weight and back in my favorite pair of jeans. I let the pounds pile on for awhile before deciding to do much about it. And when I started to care, it seemed more trouble than it was worth.

 

In the spring of 2007, I tried jogging on a regular basis. I didn't lose any weight. Over that next year, I tried eating a little better and going to the gym with a friend. Still nothing.

 

In the summer of 2008, I had a breakthrough (with the help of the bio-identical hormones getting my body slowly back in order). I spent two to three days a week at the gym and lost about six pounds. I never got into a smaller size, but I loved feeling like my body could handle the basics of living.

Elizabeth commented on yesterday's Pump Nostalgia post, saying she has been type 1 for 38 years and has in the past resisted the idea of going on a pump. She wants to know what I find so thrilling about it.


For starters, and probably the biggest things for me, it's the precision and the convenience. As for precision there are a couple of aspects: I don't have to conform to a certain number of carbs to match my insulin:carb ratio. For example, like many people, I am more insulin resistant in the morning, so my insulin:carb ratio is lower. So if I'm having 45 carbs and my insulin:carb ratio is 1:12 and my sugar is within target, I can't take 3.75 units with an insulin pen. So I either have to decrease or increase the number of carbs or the amount of insulin and deal with the consequences later.

Exercise can be a really tricky thing when you're diabetic. Whether you're starting a new routine or just changing up an old one, it's tough to manage blood sugars alongside cardio and resistance training. The ups and downs add an extra edge to the difficulty of staying in shape.

 

Last week, I decided to try some new exercise classes which sent my blood sugars into a tailspin. Luckily, I was able to lower my insulin and fend off the lows...but I wasn't able to achieve the balance that I crave. This week I'm still working hard to get back into shape (and lose some more weight)...but mostly I'm trying to find that medium ground between the highs and lows of exercise.

The other day, Michelle posted about censoring her blog to not upset her mother sometimes. I realize I do this too, but not for the same reason. I tend to censor my writing out of superstition. I'm like one of those people who mouth the word cancer. When things are going good for me, I know if I blog about it, things will quickly turn around.

 

Last week, I chose to not look over my shoulder (or toss salt over it) and jump up and down with glee over my new pump. I was so excited about it, and how much easier it made my diabetes control.

 

I should know better than to speak up when things are going good. I should have whispered instead. I even knocked wood to fend off the fates, but I guess they heard me over all that banging.
