Public transit in Los Angeles county is not the best in the world, but we are getting better.
I hear about people in New York that don't even need cars because they can take the train where they want to go most of the time.
The problem here is that everything is so spread out that I just do not see how I could ever utilize the Metro system, as it's called here.
But this weekend I had a fun idea planned. We finally had a Saturday with no parties, no events, and no nothing so I figured it would be a good day for an adventure!
I told the kids to get up early and get all showered and ready to go. "We're going to have an adventure day!"

Yesterday I wrote a blog called, "New Adventure". I want to say "thank you" to everyone who took the time to comment on it and thanks to everyone else who continue to visit my site and follow with me in my experiences. This whole thing continues to blow my mind and without all of you it wouldn't be possible. (READ MORE)

I'm a self-proclaimed adventurer. I love to try new things, go to all sorts of places, and I'm always up for a challenge. So college seemed like it'd be one huge adventure in life. But three years ago, I sat down to apply to colleges and had no idea as to what I wanted. Plus there was one major issue looming over me: my health.
I've always known that diabetes would keep me a little more cautious than most. But I've never let it stop me. I played sports, I took trips, I even went zip-lining through the jungle last year. Diabetes means that I plan much more than the average person, that I don't just pick up and leave without extreme consideration. I never thought it would hold me back.

Today, Monday, I start a new job. To supplement my personal training business and this blogging job, I have decided to do some work landscaping. I love to work outside. I have done some work with this company before. When I was 18, my good friend and I worked there for a summer job. It was very hard and physically taxing work. I spent a lot of 8 hour shifts shoveling dirt, rocks, and mulch. A lot of time was spent bending over or on my knees planting, sweating, and working with my hands and body. (READ MORE)

Somewhere between work and sewing the overgown for my most recent renaissance-faire visit, I managed to miss Friday's Blog Action Day. It's not something I feel I must participate in, but it's an occasional source of inspiration -- especially when it's a topic that can be turned on its ear.
This year the topic was water -- in particular, access to clean drinking water. Washing water. Safe, parasite-free water. Something that is lacking in many parts of the world. (At least one episode of Bobby G, Adventure Capitalist showed the eponymous individual playing a major role in bringing safe drinking water to a Nicaraguan community.)

There's a lot about diabetes that isn't so happy. Really, 98% isn't. But to me, there are things about this disease that top the list of the worst parts of diabetes. The biggest thing is the utterly hopeless need for insulin.
I can't hide the facts from myself like I can when I think about complications or discrimination. I can tell myself that better control will lower my risk of complications, that they might not happen to me. I can believe that employers, lovers, and friends won't judge me on my diabetes. Those are things that always leave glimmers of hope in my heart; they aren't finite.

Sometimes I wonder why I moved four hours away from my family and friends. Sometimes the nights are tough, long, and sleepless. Sometimes I'm homesick and in need of a nice girls' night with my best friends.
Every time that happens, I think of two things: what made me move and what it'd be like to move back. The first is easy. I had multiple factors pushing me away from home and into a new adventure. I wanted to try something different, move away from the city that I'd always known and away from the instant network of friends and family. I wanted a good graduate program that I didn't have to wait months to attend. I wanted to be close to Marvin.

Wow. What an unbelievable adventure life is. I don't even know where to begin today. I guess one thing that I wanted to share is that I recently moved. Last weekend I was in a bad way. It's no secret - just look at my past entries - that I have struggled with bouts of hard times.
So Saturday, after a few longs nights and hours of heavy contemplation, I packed up my stuff and left. I needed to get out of my home town - away from some feelings that I've been struggling to overcome. I had made a call that day to a guy whose number and add I found on Craigslist. The add said that their was a room for rent near the beach in Florida. I was sold. I arrived on Sunday night after a total of about 18 hours of driving.Â

I'm kind of a veteran at packing for vacations. My family has been vacationing forever. I was on a plane at 3 months old. And ever since, we've taken trips at least once a year. Usually out of the country too.
So I've always known how to pack for big trips where medical care might not be the best. I know the double rule, where you pack double the amount of supplies you would usually use in that time period. I also know what it's like to be stuck in a place with no way out (my mom and I got stranded in Mexico due to a hurricane one year). Packing is easy. And fun for me.
Except this trip is really kicking my booty. I'm gone a total of 12 days, from Friday to the next Tuesday. It's a kind of trip that I've never taken before...a very long cruise with stops every day. I have no idea what to expect.

Three young children and their parents walked ahead of us in the parking lot as we approached the line going into Six Flags Great Adventure.
"Charlie, can you spot the one with diabetes?" I asked.
It didn’t take him long.
"The one in the middle," he said.
The boy was tall and thin and his pump tubing hung low like a biker’s chain, completely exposed.
As we got closer to the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes kick-off event, we saw even more.
It gave me goose bumps.
"There’s one!" Maeve shouted.
"Ooh! There’s another!" she said again, as if finding fireflies.
Even Maeve was getting into the excitement of the moment.
