Since getting my hands on a review copy of Jenny Ruhl's new book, "Blood Sugar 101: What they don't tell you about diabetes" (Technion Books), I haven't been able to put it down.
Finally, an intellegent book about type 2 diabetes that tells it like it is and offers practical advice without talking down to me or engaging in quackery. Reading it, I feel like I did when met best friend Sue in middle school or when first found Diabetic Mommy. There's someone else who gets it! (READ MORE)

I am up 1 pound from a month ago. I've been up as high as 3 pounds and as low as 2 pounds down. Truth be told, it's more like 6 weeks I have been doing this yo-yo trick up and down that 5 pound range.
I've been fairly good about logging my food. The days that the log stops at lunch are the problem. The afternoon snack attacks are sabotaging my efforts. I feel helpless to stop them. It's really detrimental to be feeling this way. (READ MORE)

A recent post I put up, about trying to manage Olivia's blood sugars, generated a comment from someone about regulating carbs. I was initially kind of pissed off by the answer. I realized, after thinking about it for a couple of days, that I was more pissed off with myself than with the commenter. (READ MORE)

"Guess what!" Susanne said with an enthusiasm that was clearly over-embellished.

 

"The whole school is getting a hot pretzel today. For free!"

 

"Uh huh," I respond cautiously.

 

"Not just Charlie's class. The whole school! Everyone! Everyone in the school will be eating a hot pretzel!"

 

"OK, I get it."

 

"Isn't it great???"

 

I applaud her use of sarcasm. Something I take pride in. We both know full well, this was in fact not great. Not great at all. Hot pretzels have never been kind.

As the holidays approach so to do the fears of having high blood sugars. It never fails, I dream of making it through Thanksgiving and Christmas without hyperglycemia. But as I sit down and see all the beautiful voluptuous foods, I can't help but to chow down on everything!

I go through the meats, breads, veggies, casseroles, and then come the desserts. And after all that I usually go through for a second swipe at all my favorites from the first trip.

This is why I sometimes take my shot after meals, especially on the holidays. This way I can sit back and think about everything that I have had and start doing the math in my head. This can lead to overeating though, because I think to myself, "well, I might as well just keep eating and just take more insulin."

You may have heard in the past couple months that the FDA ruled that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and anything that contains it could no longer be labeled "natural".  Surprise, surprise, the Corn Refiners Association has convinced them to change their minds this week.

 

It turns out that the "synthetic fixing agent for the enzyme used in the process does not come into contact with the high dextrose equivalent corn starch hydrolysate".  So all the ingredients it takes to make HFCS are natural, except the major one that doesn't end up in the product, so it's "natural".  Even though you or I could never cook it up in our kitchens.

I'm grateful to live in a part of the country where anything and everything I could possibly want is within a 5-mile radius. My husband and I have occasionally talked about moving out to the country, but then we quickly realize we wouldn't do well out there. Personally, I'm not what you'd call hearty folk. Besides, I couldn't imagine having to drive 30 minutes just to get to the supermarket. Let alone not living a stone's throw from a Whole Foods.
I do the majority of my grocery shopping at a regular supermarket, but a few times a month I make a special trip to Whole Foods. I love that they have ready-to-eat meals that don't wreak havoc on my blood sugar. (READ MORE)

One of the ways I break up my day is to frequently check in with my sisters at Diabetic Mommy. This morning I posted a question on the message board that has gotten me thinking lately.
I wanted to know how much everyone spends on groceries on a weekly basis. For our family of five, I spend an average of $200 a week on food, toiletries and other incidentals. Basically, anything I can pick up at WalMart. Our budget, though, needs some tweaking and there are few things left to adjust besides our grocery bill. (READ MORE)

My sister got a call from the hospital at which Mom has been recovering after valve replacement surgery. After a couple of days of perfect sinus rhythm, her care team suddenly wanted consent to insert a permanent "on demand" pacemaker. The issue was a single episode of about eight seconds of no heartbeat. While the idea of a pacemaker had been broached before, it was earlier in Mom's recovery. Since then, as far as we all could tell, things had quieted back down to "normal".

I took Olivia to the pediatrician on Monday, to go over the blood work. Everything came back fine. Perfect. So this stomach thing has all of us stumped now.

I have a referral to a gastroenterologist because the pediatrician doesn't know what's wrong with Olivia. Fantastic.

The celiac panel came back negative, which was nice, although I've since read on the CWD parents mailing list that kids can have celiac without having symptoms or a funky blood test. That makes no sense to me, but people are saying they eliminated gluten from their children's diets and the stomach issues went away. Something to ask about, I guess.
