I was going to tell you about ice hockey on Saturday. How I tried to test Charlie in the locker room after his game and he shook his head and quietly said, "No. Let's do it in the car."
In light of the recent tragedies in the diabetes community, it seems like a trivial concern.
I still haven't read the stories in full detail, because to be honest, I can't. I noticed people talking about it on Facebook, but quickly looked away as if it might blind my eyes. What in this world can be more painful and devastating than losing a child. I would be lying if I said I never thought about it.

If anything can make having diabetes "fun", it's the cool toys I get to play with. While I don't consider myself within the normal confines of geekiness, I'm one of those folk who feel lost without multiple computers and a broadband Internet connection to-hand, and the ability to capture and analyze data up the wing-wah. (Whether or not I actually use that ability, or use it consistently, is another story.)
Managing diabetes falls right into the obsessions of a data wonk.

Well, it’s that time again. The new school year is right around the corner. Time to revise our 504 plan, give the kids their semi-annual shower and purchase more school supplies than we ever have before.
I’m sure you’ve seen this on the news. Due to budget cuts, many school districts around the country are asking that in addition to the usual pens, pencils, folders and notebooks, parents also contribute classroom items such as toilet paper, printer paper and anti-bacterial wipes. Fair enough, but I was surprised to find shark nets, sedatives and vodka on our list.
Hmm. Well … it is for kindergarten.
Point taken.

Being a dad with diabetes can be tricky. I watch everything my kids do hoping I do not spot a symptom of this stupid disease in their lives. When they want a lot to drink I worry. If I hear them get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom I worry. If they are tired for no reason I worry.
Besides keeping a watchful eye on my kids I am also always careful about what I fill our cupboards with. We don’t my sugary cereals Hostess is not one of our major food groups, and regular soda is almost never in our home.
The bad side about this is feeling like the enemy of fun. I know I am making good choices for them but at the same time I feel kind like a jerk who doesn’t want them to enjoy kid stuff.

I am a gamer. I love playing video games either on my PC or on our Nintendo Wii.
2 weeks ago I was able to get my hands on the last Wii Fit being sold at our local retailer. In case you are not familiar with what Wii Fit you should check out this video clip.
Wii Fit is a fitness game from Nintendo that works using the Wii controllers and the Wii Fit Balance Board. The Balance Board is a highly sensitive peripheral that can measure a user’s weight and center of gravity. The software that comes with it can calculate your BMI when told the user’s height.

I think Mousie nailed it in her comment from my last post. The age of 6 really is shaping up to be a time of new understanding. And yes, Charlie is clearly dealing with diabetes on a new level.
These days he's showing signs of wanting more control. He now loads the test strip into the meter, though he's not ready to test himself yet. He's also started reading labels for total carbs. A tug of war over a bag of crackers usually ensues when I try to make sure he's right about the carbs before I enter it into the pump. He's getting frustrated.
Charlie: Can I eat now?
Me: (pulling) I just want to check the carbs!
Charlie: (pulling) I told you! 16 carbs!
Me: (pulling) I. Just. Want. To. See. The.
Me: Shit!

This weekend was a busy one. Typically we are busy folk. It seems there is always an event, party, meeting, or whatnot to attend. This weekend was no different.
I had a happy and successful start to Saturday with a loss on the old Weight Watchers scale. The weather was perfect which was both bitter and sweet since most of the country is having horrible weather. But living in Southern California has its definite pluses and minuses. The next stop was a friends Baby Shower in which all the guys were going to hang out at the house with the dad-to-be as the gals had the shower somewhere else. (READ MORE)

Man, are my legs killing me. I can barely walk down the stairs while carrying an almost 15 pound baby. What in the world could have made me so sore? I haven't been to the gym or done any exercise videos. But I have not been this sore since I can't remember when.
Then it hits me. We bought a Wii over the weekend. Determined to use the purchase for good, I've been making sure to move as much as possible while playing games. The "purpose" was to get us off the couch and get some "exercise". I just never thought it would work this well.
So far, my favorite game is bowling. I'm not a good bowler in real life, and I'm not a great virtual bowler either. But it's still fun (and somehow I still manage to throw gutter bowls?). My own mother who has never played a video game in her life totally kicks my tail in Wii bowling, too. (READ MORE)

I needed a set change last night. I am not one of the good diabetics that always do their set changes the same time of day. When I run out, I change. Anyhow, last night was one of those times.
My kids wanted to play some Nintendo Wii before they had to take their evening showers so I decided that I would change my set first and then we could play. I switched from my left leg to my right leg. Typically I start at the top of my thigh on the far right and then move my way across my thigh until I have to move down and start over.
